Kenton was at that period the leading i spirit of the region of Northern Ken tacky where the Records lived and i where the pursuits which treauentiy terminated in bloody battles uponthe Ohio side usually began The present one originated by a young man by the name of Livingston being captured by the Indians while hauling bacon and other provisions alone through 'a thick forest for the relief of Station which stood about six miles west of the town of Washington which as it will be re membered is only three or four miles back of Maysville Station being the home of the Hugheys they were among the pursuers who were headed by General Simon Kenton The Indians had evidently been fearfnl of a delay for they had not even taken time to destroy the provisions but tak ing young Livingston and the horses had left the wagon standing with its load untouched John Hughey anc Laban Records acting as scouts for the neighborhood of Station hat discovered the deserted wagon and signs of Indians and having reported it at the fort General Kenton lost no time in collecting a company of men and beginning the The com pany soon on the trail and following it with that unerring cer tainty eagerness and rapidity which! so distinguished the pioneer Indian I scout ollowing the trail to a point I on the Ohio River where the Indians I had crossed they soon rolled some logs into the river and lashing them to gether formed a rude raft on which they crossed to the Ohio side and were soon again in hot pursuit Cautiously following the trail for some fifteen miles to a point where the town of Bethel in Clermont County now stands Kenton halted his men and knowing that they were close upon the Indians detailed John and Charles Hughey and Adam Shrofe to advance cautiously and ascertain the number and locality of the redskins and under strict or ders not to fire a gun They crept quickly and stealthily forward and had not proceeded over half a mile when they came in sight of three per sons two on horseback and one on foot which they believed to be the In dians The one on foot was carrying a large pack upon his back The two Hugheys and Shrouf held a hasty con ference and notwithstanding their order not to fire determined (each be ing a good marksman) to file on them Each singling out his the Hugheys taking the Indians on horse back and Shroufe the one on foot at a signal the reports of their rifles rang out almost as one and the Indian that Charies Hughey fired at fell dead from his horse The one that John Hughey had selected fell on one side of bis horse and his gun upon the other The one at whom Shroufe bad fired started to run and Shroufe thinking he could catch him dropped his gun started after him Being a fleet runner he soon overhauled the supposed Indian and catching him by the shoulder was amazed to hear him call out in plain English sake kill He had caught young Livingston Kenton hearing the firing brought his company quickly to the scene of action All were greatly rejoiced at the good fortuneof Livingston and on examination it was found that Shroufe had put a bullet into the pack instead of jast below it as he had intended pack contained his great coat some of his own clothing a blanket and a thick black I bottle known in those days as all of which the ball had passed through "and was lying between his vest and shirt having done no damage except to sting and blacken the skin The pursuit of Livingston had drawn the whites away from the scene of the shooting andreturning they now found I but one Indian The other had been! wounded and had so well secreted him self as to fail all their efforts to find him Livingston informed them that there was another Indian belonging to the party and that he was absent hunting They however concluded to waste no more time but to return at once to the fort and restore Livingston to his grief stricken parents It was afterward learned through the following incident that the wound ed Indian had been shot through the hips Some years after the above re cited occurrence and after peace had been declared Charles Hughey with a number of his friends and acquaint ances' were at an election held at a tavern kept by Christian Platter one mile from where the town of Bain bridge now stands While there a number of Indians came in from a hunt ting expedition and one of their num ber who was lame hearing the nameof Hughey called said kill him be shoot me in Hughey being engaged in conversation and not see ing the Indian a man by the name of Bare seeing the Indian rush at Hughey with a drawn kinfe called
