that people went up there to see it Its erection was midway of an era which went back to the old City Hotel and Howard Hotel and forward to the Metropolitan and St Nicholas The hosteliies of those days took their names frem home sub jccts the old Clinton where the pio I neer of the Leland family made a be ginning of the hotel business in some humble capacity was named after the Governor who planned just as the Huffman in recent times was named after another Chief Magis trate of the Empire State the Brandreth the Gilsey the Coleman the Sturtevant and the Everett were and are perpetuations of individuals Then came topical or local designations such as tie ew York the Union Square and ifth Avenue The St Nicholas was a tribute to the patron saint the Metropolitan marked the era when New Yorkassum cd metropolitan rank and the United States was the home of sea captains who conducted our international com merce The epoch of traveled Ameri cans and visiting Englishmen came next with such hotels as the Clarendon Albemarle St James Windsor West minster Brunswick and Buckingham The rdnch and continental fashion of putting the word before the' name came with and succeeded this stage of nomenclature The Hotel Normandy is a happy illustration Numerous others might be sited among the latest of them tho Hotel Bartholdi which was quite an inspiration of its sponsor and the Hotel Lesson in Geology While everybody is interested in natural gas and rock in which the gasis found and as Wilming ton ns well as other places is going down in search of the one in hopes or finding the orher the following essay on the subject by Prof Orton State Geologist will prove instructive as well as entertaining: Trenton rock ormorepropeily Tren ton limestone is the name of a geolog ical formation that was first noted in Oneida County? some fifty years ago where in the deep gorge of a water course limestone walls containing well preserved fossils characteristic of 1 the division of geological time known 1 ns the lower Silurian age were found The rocks of this' period had received no local name in North America so they were christened Trenton lime stone Trenton limestone which has aequir 1 ed such importance of late is a daik blue almost black rock lying in mas sive even beds which are sometimes separated by layers of thick shale The limestone has the thickness of about 150 feet Ir is covered by a stratum of 300 feet of thin bedded dark shale which is sometimes mistaken for coal The slate is called the Utica slate or shale Trenton limestone was the firstgreat 1 limestone formation on the continent and was much wider than any that sue cceded it It is found all over most parts of eastern North America 1 The limestone was built up by Ids 1 sils and of them It grew in a shallow sea bepeath which the future conti 1 nent of North America was outlined 1 When theTrentonlimesfone wasgrow ing in its tropical ocean the earth knew but a single climate it was tho same from the pole to the equator Warm water and a mild atmosphere prevailed and the same life grew and multiplied i from the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of I Mexico Organic matter from the tis 1 sues of the various animals whose shellsand structures contributed to the forming of the rock were incorporated in this limestone The uses of the Trenton limestone are manifold It yields the magnifi cently fertile soils of the Kentucky blue grass region It furnishes build ing stone and lime for the world At some points notably in Vermont Ten nessee and is the basis of rich marble quarries and in the Ga lena district of Northern Illinois and Wisconsin lead ore is found in he first eighty feet of this formation At lower depths mineral water of value in a me dicinal way flows from the Trenton limestone and petroleum 1 as long been discovered in it in small quantities at various points Trenton limestone lias become an object of much inter st because of the surprising developments of oil and gas in Northwestern Ohio It nnderliesthe entire State of Ohio and its existence has been thoroughly demonstrated in the western half by drilling done in more than thirty counties within the last year There isbuta single locality in' which it comes to the surface and that is in tho valley of the Ohio fifteen miles above Cincinnati at the bottom of the furrow which tho Ohio river has worn fox its bed The limestone rocks (hat arc visible here have long been known as the lowest rocksof the State The surface of the Trenton limestone at Point Pleasant is about 450 feet above tide water This is the greatest elevation the stratum reaches in Ohio In Kentucky it rises several hundred feet higher rom Point Pleasant the Trenton rock descends northwardly across Ohio at the rate of from three to tun feat the mile To the east ward it tuerc rapidly and to the west not so rapidly There are numerous small rolls and some abrupt breaks that mar the regu larity of the northwaid descent but over large sections the full is quite steady At Cincinnati the surface is about 325 feet above the sea at Ham ilton 215 at Middletown 117 Alittlo east of Eaton it reaches a sea level at Dayton is 120 feet below tide and at Washington 385 feet below Thu Trenton limestoneholdsits high est lino of levels apparently through Clermout Hamilton Butler and Preble Counties bearing away west of north It reaches tho sea level in Preblo County and appears to keep about the i same elevation through a large section along tho border of Ohio and North western Indiana At Lebanon it would bo about 112 Inall of the good wells that have been struck with perhaps a single ex ception tho surface of the Trenton limestone ranges between three and four hundred feet below tide These figures are very significant when it is remembered that Ohio has a range of more than two thousand feet from450 above tide in the Ohio Valley to 1600 below at Sandusky and all of the gas of real practical importance ishadfrom a few localities in which tho limestone has tho levels that have been noted ami where there is a fractured or ab normal structure The statements of the drillers prove that not a single well in Northwestern Ohio is producing oil from Trenton imestone where it lies more than five inndredfeet below the level of the sea and not a single well is emitting cas in quantities exceeding one hundred thou sand cubic feet daily where jthe top of the Trenton rocl lies more than four hundred feet below tide water All of the gas wells of Ohio combined Jhat get their' gas from a lower level lack in volume and pressure and in the aggre gate do not yield more than two hun dred thousand cubic feet of gas daily One or two good Sewing machine Salesmen with herse and Imraess Will pay part salary SANDERSON Singer
