heavens from the square which is bounded on the east by the business block of Hawley the livery stable of Nor dyke and the Midland Hotel facing on South street and on the north by the Journal office consumption She is a daughter of the late Dr lood oster Gifts 1ms been at all the big political meeting within twenty miles of home and' must of those in Cincin nati and ho considers suc cessor in the Senate Senator speech the best of all oster cast the first ballot here on election day The hottest Republican that we have seen this year is Edmund West who formerly voted the Democratic ticket He became disgusted with his party when it began to call Garfield a petty thief and now when he hears of rascality it only makes him the more anxious to vote for him The most amusing thing we have at tended for a long time was the Demo cratic rally at this place on the even ing of the election' The torchlight procession was just too funny then came the speech by the orator of the evening Sam Beard of Leesburg The meeting was held on the public square Two thirds of the crowd ig nored the speaker and spent the time in various ways while the other third listened to leather langs for one long hour The first thing Sam did was to the crowd free trate too much he knew spelling book cost two cents too much but when he spoke of the horny headed farmer paying a tariff of $48 for every reaper he bought ho became raving indignant and chased the Chairman from one end of the wagon to the other But the tariff was a small thing compared with the monop olies just see! Jay Cooke got enough land with the Northern Pacific to make five thousand poor families happy when Jay Cooke we lost the rest Sam is no slouch of an ora tor he was very eloquent when he ut tered back in the Af ter all this Doc Savage read from manuscript why he did not do as "John and had done Then the band played and Tom Mcadden pro posed three cheers for and which was given by half of the crowd of the siding of the ice house of Hawlev and a number of smaller buildings and fences were also burned The Ziegler stable was rented by Dr Hill and contained his horse and buggy The buggy was saved but the fire starting in the hay in close proximity to the horse it could not be rescued and perished in the flames The Lauber stable contained a quantity of fine molding belonging to Hood this also was lost The fire department prevented the flames from spreading further and the night being very still the surrounding valuable property was by hard work saved It is not known how the fire originated but it is sup posed some one was sleeping in the hay in the first stable and carelessly ignited it You are earnestly requested to call and see our fine display of cheap and save money Now we all know that farming implements never could be cheaper thsn they are for the United States supply the great bulk of the machinery in foreign agricultural countries! Home compe tition is what makes cheap machinery and we can make farming implements cheaper than they can in England and pay the cost of transportation to the United States But the fact is Eng land want to sell farming imple ments to the United States for she make any to amount to anything But it is cotton woolen and steel ware that England does want to sell That was the reason the town of Bradford being a manufacturing city of these wares sent $350000 to aid the elec tion of Hancock and free trade four years ago England would like to cripple our manufacturers so the raw material would all go to England to be manufactured and then flood the United States and thus enrich John Bull at the expense of Uncle Sam But why not protect our own workshops work up our own raw material give employment to our own people and let England take care of herself Un der Democratic rule once upon a time we bad practical free trade England got our raw material at their own prices and sold us their wares at such prices as they chose to ask and thus enriched themselves and formed the nucleus of the enormous wealth of Pay for Agents SlOOtnSSOO par ma mads selling ourOrand Xew History amous and Haeisive Bat tles of tbe World Wove to Iflc Curdy Co Philadelphia Pa uih3bo He was not soured because his party did not make him a Probate Judge I bnt because he became convinced that tbe Republican wjis the rigtitside and therefore proudly wears a Blaino ami Logan badge The happiest man since the election is certainly our German friend Henry Vetniiman Mr had not attended a single rally but one day while in town was drawn out in a debate on the tariff question in which his practical knowledge proved too much for tho 'theories of his opponent Our friend says that Ins father owned a farm of 160 acres but on account of free trade itrequired the wisest economy in order to make both ends meet When he left his atherland Germany was a weak divided Nation But since Bis marck adopted a system that Nation suddenly became rich and pow erful In liis opinion the man that is in debt and votes for free trade is wrong Since he has shown himself one of the best financiers in the coun try it might be well to heed his advice Our attention has been called to a copy of tho Democrat in which there is an item claiming to correct a on our part We allude to the statement we made that Mr II Thorp intended to vote the Republican ticket We received this information from one of his personal friends who felt justified in so representing him from conversation he had had with him Your Sabina correspondent reports him as not having fully decided how he should vote up to the date of the interview but in the there Was one vote on which tho State ticket was purely Democratic and the re mainder Prohibition This ballot we are informed Mr Thorp claims to have cast He is a mam that we have always respected as a gentleman and esteemed as a friend and we do not in the least because we fail to see the consistency of his way of voting By this ballot we suppose ho wishes to be considered a Democrat of temperance proclivities for one of the most active members of that par ty says that all of their confiden tial and secret meetings Henry Thorp was one of the most If he wishes tobe understood as a Prohibi tionist he is as consistent as any that we have met How he could vote for the re election of a man for Secretary of State who had been elected to that office on a platform of beer and no in preference to a "cru and for Supreme Judge vote for a man recommended by Liquor Association rather than for one that had the moral courage to stand alone and declare all the tem perance laws constitutional and who had also labored assidiously for the second amendment is no more difficult to understand than the conversation we beard between a Prohibitionist ana liquor dealer on election day ibis Prohibitionist is one of the most active and in the presence of the writer and several others called to the said liquor idealer who is the most extensive dealer of the in the town and probably in the county and asked him to use his (the Prohibition) ticket whenever his own (the Demo cratic) work lhe liquor dealer replied with a smile that he was just out had just used the last one and the nice thing of it was it was on a Republican and he would be glad to have some more immediately And will present one to each customer buying goods to the amount of one dollar or more until the 1st of November Al in Green We have the largest stock and best grade of Whitewash Paint and Var nish Brushes low for cash Brown Bros tf When you want anything in tho casting line go to John Mooie at the Champion Bridge Works if The best fine of pocket books purses and wallets at Taylor Weg Brown Brothers Druggists Builders Contractors 1'aiiitern and others are requested to call and get inces on Paints Oils Glass arms!) bearing of the tariff on agriculture and the wily demagogue often by smooth language and a per version of facts finds his easiest dupe in the farmer ree trade says the demagogue will flood your markets with cheap manufactured articles and the farmer can buy his implements oovn mnnnv i ClltiiP tlUlA 04 VV The BlccUcn The election iu Wilminglon passed off quietly There was a determined effort on the part of the workers of both parties and no point was allowed to escape them at the polls There were few contests however no bitter disputes and but two arrests Early in the evening the crowds began to as semble at the different headquarters the Republicans using the City Hall and the Democrats the Cleveland and Hendricks Club rooms Telegrams commenced coming at 9 clock and continued until 2 in the morning At the hall the wildest excitement pre vailed and one continuous cheer was kept up the whole evening The Dem ocrats closed went home about midnight but the Republicans re mained until half past 2 At 1 the news was received that Ham ilton County had gone Republican and Butterworth and Brown were both elected to Congress in the comuosed of that county the enthu siasm knew no bounds and la rush was made for the torches The80 were soon procured and aprocessionef prob ably three hundred men was quT formed and paraded the town It is needless to say that no one could sleep along tho line of march and the good news that Ohio was Republican was in that way quickly communicated to the residents of the central portion of the town After disbanding the hall was again filled and as long as telegrams came the crowd remained but finally went to their homes to sleep the sleep of the happy We publish elsewhere the official vote of the county taken from the abstract in the office and it will be found to be correct By that it will bo noticed that the vote in tbe county was very large Tho Re publican majority was 1472 a gain over last year of forty one The Pro hibitionists had an increase over last year of ninety one but not near as large a vote as they have heretofore polled The new precincts in Union Township are very evenly divided there being only a difference of thirty votes between them and tbe Repub lican majority in the West being one greater than in the East The excite ment will be kept up for two weeks more and then people can settle down to business and other
