patient was also taken the same night and it is thought by the same parties As yet no clue has been obtained as to who the guilty parties were These burg laries in the smaller towns particularly where there are no banks are getting to be of too frequent occurrence and we would suggest that the merchants of such places employ some means at once by which they may be better pro tected Before you buy Thanks for favors in the past All wc ask you to lo is to continue iu well doing Kespectfnlly yours Captain A Boshnell Elected Pree dential Elector by Acclamation The convention which assembled in Springfield on Tuesday August 5 did not succeed in naming the next Con gressman until last Thurdsay evening The first ballot taken resulted in 25 votes for Eichelberger of Champaign 43 for Bushnell of Clarke 24 for Doan of Oiinton 19 for Williams of ayette and 29 for Little of Greene and so it stood for 573 ballot each county voting for its own candidate Occasionally to relieve the monotony and to compliment the other candi dates a delegation would divide its vote among them but it meant noth ing and on the next call of counties it would return to its love This dead lock continued until Thursday af ternoon when a resolution was passed providing that if no nomination was made by 8 that evening that the convention wduld adjourn sine die and it then took a recess until 7 Thjs' created some excitement for it was supposed that the evening session would show some new features and a result be reached Upon assembling at the hour named and a ballot being taken there was no change in the figures As the hour for adjournment drew near the excitement ran very high but no change occurred until the 574th ballot when Mr Mar tin Chairman of the Clarke County delegation arose and said Chairman I have a statement to make to convention Captain Bushnell entered thiarace and baa in this con test an eye single to the good of the Republican party against the advice 1 and protestations of his friends be has decided to withdraw his name from the contest feeling that it would be a disgrace to this convention to adjourn without making a nomination I there fore cast the 34 votes of Clarke County for John Little of Greene This virtually settled it and the con vention for ten minutes was wild with excitement When order was restored and the call of counties continued ayette cast 9 votes and Greene 29 for Little Clinton still sticking to Doan with her full vote On motion of the Champaign delega tion the nomination was made unani mous After electing Captain Bushnell for Presidential Elector and compli menting Chairman Pringle with a vote of thanks this memorable convention 1 adjourned No such convention has ever before been held in the State balloting for two days and nights before reaching a result is unprecedented in the history of Republican conventions but it was due to tliefaet that all the candidate were good men and each county en thusiastic for its own The following is the speech of Levi 1 Mills in seconding the nomination of 1 Mr Doap Republicans and Gen 1 As arep resentative of the Rupublican party and its principles we stand to day be tween two vast periods in our history The past record of the Re publican party is of grand results and accomplished work written with a pen of iron in the rock forever and has gone into history never to be effaced to give a faithful record of the patriot ism the statesmanship the philan thropy of its adherents in the light of the present Republican party and in the gleam of her past achievements as they bear upon the interest of all classes of the community Who is there who can prophesy the weight of future glory in store for her? Ever since I was born forty years ago Clinton County has had but one single representative in Congress Not because she had no great men her fields and shops are full ot them Wlen the Republicans of Clinton County like Jacob who la bored fourteen years faithfully for Rachel faithfully in all services we have been willing to abide our time which we down there in Clinton be lieve Mr President for faithful old Clinton has now come And we are here in her behalf and as a delegation voicing the united sentiment of four thousand loyal royal Republicans in Clinton County Our ustial majority of 1600 if you give us Bob Doan will be rolled up to 1700 majority over our competitors and nothing but the blast of the resurrection trump of the angel Gabriel can ever prevent the nominee whoever he may be from getting old Clinton County A man of humble pa rentage he learned his first lesson in the interest of laboring men in the sound of a flax flail and the loom and he learned that protection of American labor in the use of a mattock the hammer and plow Pro longed applause A Republican in digo blue dyed in the wool warranted fast color and although as you have heard to day he was twice before a convention seeking the nomination as Congressman went 'home with the honors upon the shoulders of another man yethe took the stump and made more speeches in the campaign than any other Republican that Clinton County ever gave birth to And al though he has known defeat twice has come here to this convention believing that he is going to be the man and we will expect it Yet I say to you that whether he is or is not if he is defeated here to day he will go home just like he always has saying like Paul that I am fully persuaded that neither heights nor depths principalities nor powers nor things to come shall ever be able to separate Bob Doan from the Republi can party And I say to you with James Blaine in the White House is a continual universal inspiration and whose Volte is of mag netic power and General John A Lo gon the soldier statesman presiding over the Senate as brave and fearless as be is generous and companionable and in the House of Representatives such a man as Bob Doan whose elo quence like the Song of the siren com pels men to listen there is no telling what the Republican party will Mr Little the nominee waa born on a farm in Greene County attended a country school and finished his educa tion at Antioch College graduating there in 1862 He began the study of law in Xenia in the office of Judge Wi nans and was ad mi tted to practice in 1865 He was afterward elected Pros ecuting Attorney of Greene County which office he filled with credit to himself for two terms In 1870 he was sent to the Legislature as the Rep resentative from Greene and served in that capacity until 1873 when he waa AiwtA(1 Attorney General of the State "and discharged the important of that office for fofcx years After his term of office expired he re turned to Xenia and resumed the prac tice of Jaw where he has since ranked as one of the brightest members of the profession fv Mr nomination to represent the KigLth District of Ohio in Con gress of the United States is a deserved promotion and a merited recognition of his abilities and we have no doubt that he will be elected by a larger majority than this district ever before gave Scioto Valley air The Scioto Valley into the book store of Jeff Hil debrant and the hardware store of David Peebles It is supposed the lat ter place waa visited first aa a large sledge hammer belonging there was used at in an effort to open the safe At both places entrance was gained by way of the rear windows At store nothing was taken but a half dozen pocket knives worth probably six dollars At the book store some two dollars in small change and a revolver were all that was njissed In attempting to open the ante at the latter place the knob was found broken from the door Although the safe can be easily unlocked the bolts can not be thrown back and in consequence it can not be opened This is a cause of more expense and trouble than any other thing that wa done The work was perfonned in a very bungling manner On Sunday morning a cane was picked up in the alley back of the book store which was identified as belonging to a colored man named Mines 0 stranger here He being in company with two white men named Babcock and Alvin Haines led to the arrest of the three Babcock when brought before the Mayor broke down completely pleaded guilty and stated that the three being together Saturday evening and being very drunk this crime was pro posed and carried out Although this confession is very damaging it would hardly serve as proof sufficient to con vict Vs' Haines and Mine when arraigned before the Mayor pleaded not guilty and the hearing of the case was as signed for Saturday morning next the former giving bond and Mines on fail ure to do so was committed to the fail JOHN OSTER West House Block Wilmington
