adult daughter in a middle-class family who has returned home after a faltering affair with her live-in boyfriend Life Goes On got off to a good start this season with high praise from critics especially because of solid writing and the remarkable performance of Christopher Burke who portrays the Thacher family's middle son 18-year-old Charles known as Corky a victim of Down's syndrome According to the story line Corky with the support of his parents (played by Bill Smitrovich and Patti Lu Pone) has spent years in special education programs for children with Down's syndrome and is taking tentative steps into society's mainstream as a freshman in a "normal" high school He is amazed and at times frightened by the new world opening to him What makes Life Goes On so special is the fact that the young actor Burke was indeed born with Down's syndrome and is playing the role because of his own initiative and ability to follow through on an idea He had seen another actor Jason Kingsley guest star in an episode of The Fall Guy and wrote to congratulate him The two began a correspondence and when Warner Pros sought out Kingsley's mother who works with both the television industry and Down's syndrome organizations for advice in casting a Down's syndrome actor in the ABC movie Desperate she suggested Chris Burke The boy won the role and so impressed the film's producer that he wrote a show with Burke in mind: and bit her Officer McGrath said Ms Webster was taken to Alta View Hospital by private vehicle for treatment and later released The 10-year-old pit bull which lived several doors away has apparently never attacked anyone else Officer McGrath said However the owner voluntarily conveyed custody of the dog to Salt Lake County Animal Services because she did not want to be responsible for any future problems he said Ms Webster had left her home to get her morning newspaper when she discovered the dog and tried to help it Special to The Tribune MIDVALE A pit bull that bit an elderly woman in the face Tuesday has been turned over to county animal-control authorities and will likely be destroyed police said Wednesday Beatrice Webster 72 who lives near 100 East and 7600 South suffered "a half-dozen" puncture wounds near her mouth and eye when she was attacked outside her home about 7 am said Midvale police Officer Doug McGrath The woman was trying to untangle the dog's chain which was caught in her rose bushes when the dog apparently "got upset knocked her down" i iLl I 11 11 11 )- 11 3 7 1 1 I the result was Life Goes On A year ago Monique
