He graduated tiy from Davis Hiyh School where he served as student body president and excelled in athletics Thornley attended the University of Utah and as on undergraduate was a member of the varsity football team earning All-Conference and All-American honors his senior year He was a member of Sigma Chi Owl and Key Delta Theta Phi and Skull and Bones Thornley University football coach Ike Armstrong affectionately nick- named him Tug a name close cc quaintances often called him Thornley graduated from the University of Utah College of Low and soon after married Dorothy Paine also a graduate of the University He and Dorothy settled in Koysville Utah At age 25 he was elected Mayor of Kaysville and at that time was the youngest mayor in the United States lie was a partner in Pay Ovinney and Nebeker law firm until 1961 when he was named judge to the Second Judicial Court In 1974 Thornley was ap- pointed as the Chief Judge in the Utah Judicial Council He was active in promoting legislation to improve the State Judicial system and its caseload management He also served as the Utah State Representative to the National Council of State (mit Representatives In addition to his low activities Thornley served as a board member and president of the Davis County Board of Pclucation from 1945 to 1960 In 1981 he became a member of the Emeritus Club University of Utah Alumni Association and was later awarded the Merit of Honor Award by this association Upon retirement as a judge he received a Judicial Mertt Presentation The Judges real life passion was ranching a love he acquired while working with his grandfather John Thornley his father and his two brothers He was involved in the family livestock company and he served on numerous local and national livestock boards including Notional President of Producers Livestock and Loan The Judge spent years juggling court duties with running the family ranch 9t the base of Monte Cristo Thornley greatest motivation for maintaining the ranch was to provide a gathering place for his family where wonderful memories could be made Tug and Dorothy their daughters and son Ike spent thousands of hours riding horses herding rattle and havitiq good times The rani flag will be fiying 9t half-mast Thoinley real love of life was Dorothy and this year was their 65th marriage sary Thoinley was a member of The Church of Jews Christ of Lotter-day Saints and he and Dorothy enjoyed returning to the temple during the last few years of his life Thornley was preceded in death by his brother John William (Elizabeth) Swan by a sister Mary Josephine Swan and by his mother and fattier He is survived by his wife Dorothy by his sister Norma Dean Kushner of British Columbia by a George Whitlock (I ocettn) Swan tA Oregon by his Father wanted her to come home used her free agency and quietly iw passed away Thursday August 3 1 7th 2002 at the University of Utah medical center where she had 4 been under treatment for several weeks Born in Salt Lake City to Stephen Lawrence and Merle Lindsay Moss Susan passed away a few days before her 60th birthday She grew up in Bountiful UT and graduated from Bountiful High In 1 964 Susan received a degree from BYU in the fields of Human Development and Family Relations and Library Science She then became a librarian in North Salt Lake where she worked with the children She married Ray Siddoway Broadbent October 9 1969 in the Salt Lake Temple As a member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints she has served faithfully in numerous leadership capacities wherever she has lived Among these were stake speech director a member of auxiliary presidencies and teacher in Relief Society Young Women Primary and Sunday School Along with her husband she served for five years in the San Diego Temple and for two more in the Ogden Temple They also served a full time mission together in the Single Adult Program in El Centro California Susan was well traveled enjoyed the company of her husband and loved ones and reading good books Her gentle and creative nature was expressed in crewel-embroidery work and the beautiful dolls she made Preceded in death by her parents and one brother Stephen Lawrence Moss Jr Susan is survived by her husband and three children Joseph Lawrence of Hyrum Jennifer Sue of Mesa AZ and Emily Jane who is serving a mission in El Salvador Also surviving are two brothers Thomas Idaho Falls ID William James Mesa AZ and two sisters LaRae (AN) Ball Monteview ID and Elizabeth Ann (Paul) Belnap two uncles and three Aunts Van and Romane Moss Hazel and Aaron Moss and Bertha Nielsen as well as 30 nieces and nephews A viewing will be held from 6 to 8 pm Sunday August 11 2002 at Larkin Sunset Lawn Mortuary 2350 East 1300 South family at the home of her daughter Mrs Dale (Iris) Jackson of West Mountain She died of congestive heart failure She was born 4 December 1908 in Moroni Utah the daughter of James Arthur and Augusta Manetta Larson Draper Lola married Albert Vivean Cooper of Geno la Utah on 5 December 1925 They made their home in Genolo for 37 years Vivean and an in-font son Verl preceded her in death She remained a widow for 45 years Lola has lived in Geno la Payson West Mountain and St George both alone and with her children Lola was a devoted member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints all of her life serving faithfully in many capacities She held a vibrant testimony of the Church and its teachings all of her life She loved to sing quilt and was a marvelous mother and homemaker Her greatest Joy in life was her family Her motto was "I took what come my way" Her children would add to her motto "and she chose not to complain about it She is survived by one sister Mrs Marion 1 this marvelous and remarkable elect lady led Walter Thorup SALT LAKE CITY Verl Walter Tho- rup age 90 passed away August 8 2002 after a long illness A native of Salt Lake City he was the first son of Walter Thorup and Martha Welch born -4 0 August 7 1912 At age six his mother passed away his father remarried Mary I Winter his new mother raised him Deaf from birth Vert attended the Utah School for the Deaf in Ogden UT where he met his wife Cleo Brown Smith of Hyrum They were married in the Logan Temple and have been married 64 years They attended the Utah Valley Ward for the Deaf in the Pork Stake and often spoke of their friends there Vert worked for the Newspaper Agency Corporation Lntil he was 68 years old He enloyed his co-workers and the printing trade The family honors Verl as a kind and patient husband and father who was loved and respected by all Vert is survived by his loving wife Cleo son Elvan Thorup 'Bonnie Marie) brother Marvin Steve horuo 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren His daughters Bonnie Cleo Schaff and Annette May Tull preceded him in death Their husbands John Schaff and Fred Tull survive them Also preceding Veil in death are a brother Dean
