IN BRIEF Public input sought for road project Rapid City will hold a public meeting next week on the upcoming reconstruction of Sixth Street between Omaha and Kansas City streets. Prevention group will honor efforts The efforts of local individuals and agencies to curb substance abuse among teens will be recognized at Adolescent Substance Abuse Preventions Partners in Prevention" luncheon at 11:30 a.m. Thursday, at Rushmore Plaza Holiday Inn. Honorees include: ludy Duhamel, nominated by MAPP-SD Rapid City Meth Coalition; Rural American Initiatives, South Dakota National Guard and Judge Merton Tice, all nominated by ASAP Coalition; Wayne Asscherick, nominated by Rapid City Police Department; Burke Eilers, nominated by Youth Family Services; and Susan Wheeler, nominated by Lutheran Social Services. The group will also recognize area students and community volunteers for their contributions to promoting a drug-free environment for youths in the Black Hills area. Tickets for the luncheon are available for $15 per person by calling Pam Teaney Thomas at 394-4054.

The Guess Who to play Buffalo Chip The Canadian rock group The Guess Who will play the Buffalo Chip campground during the 70th annual Sturgis motorcycle rally. It will perform Aug. 8. The band had 14 charted Tbp 40 hits in the United States, including American Woman" and No Sugar Ibnight." The Guess Who joins the 2010 lineup with Kid Rock, ZZ Top, Disturbed, Jason Aldean, The Doobie Brothers, Tesla, Orianthi and Williams Ree at Buffalo Chip. KPLO-TV back on the air after collapse KPLO-TV came back on the air Friday. The stations 711-foot tower had collapsed in an ice storm Jan. 22. Cable and satellite viewers were not affected by the tower collapse, but over-the-air viewers had not received the stations programming since the tower was knocked down. The Federal Communications Commission granted a special temporary authority to the station to transmit from a temporary tower, which is a 330-foot structure on Medicine Butte.

The tower signal only covers 70 percent of range of the previous permanent tower. Plans for a permanent tower are under way. WAVI honors states attorneys office Working Against Violence, Inc. awarded the 2009 Spirit of Peace Award to the Pennington County States Attorneys Office on Friday night at its annual Spirit of Peace event. The states attorneys office was chosen because they have been instrumental in raising awareness on the issues of domestic violence and sexual assault in the Black Hills, and they are committed to supporting WAVI," according to a news release.

Gray to run for County Commission David Gray, a retired lieutenant colonel and a 30-year employee with the South Dakota Game Fish Parks Department, announced his candidacy for the Pennington County Commission on Friday. Gray said he is running on the idea of a common -sense approach to the position. Gray is a Gulf War Veteran who served with the South Dakota Army National Guard and is the former environmental program manager for the state National Guard. After his career with the department, Gray was one of the 25 state employees working for the Department of Military and Veterans Affairs.

He was appointed to the Hill City Council and served for 10 years. Gray was the first South Dakota Army National Guard soldier to receive both the Distinguished Rifleman and Distinguished Pistol Shot badges given by the U.S. Army since the 1890s. Gray and his wife, Julie, have lived in Hill City since 1983 and have three children. Murdo teens earn national award A Jones County youth group sponsored by Ted Turner has won the National Resource Conservation and Development Outstanding Youth Involvement Award.

The award was presented in Washington, D.C., earlier this month. The Jones County Turner Youth Foundation was recognized for its work in renovating the Turner Community Center and for various community projects in Murdo. The group first won the state competition, then survived a 10-state selection process to earn the national nomination. Seven regional winners advanced to the national competition. The Ted Turner Foundation made it possible for Kia Miller and Jewell Bork of Murdo to attend the awards ceremony.
