Jeremy Guthrie gave up just two hits over eight shutout innings, and Baltimore beat Detroit 2-1 in the second game of a doubleheader. The Orioles outslugged the Tigers 10-6 earlier. Despite Derrek Lee's 3-for-5 night, which included two doubles and five RBI, the Atlanta Braves couldnt bolster their NL wild card hopes, losing at home 11-5 to Philadelphia on Friday FRIDAY'S SCORES Milwaukee 4.

Encarnacion had three hits and four RBI and has hit three homers in the first two games of the final series of the season.

Carl Pavano gave up two runs one earned and nine hits in seven innings for the Twins (93-67), who fell 1-12 games behind the New York Yankees for the best record in the AL. Normally reliable reliever Jesse Crain (1-1) gave up four runs on three hits in the eighth and the AL Central champions have lost seven of eight with the playoffs less than a week away. Ricky Romero (14-9) gave up two runs on six hits in eight innings and Lyle Overbay and John Buck each added three hits for the Blue lays. The Blue Jays led 6-2 to start the ninth, but Trevor Ploufte homered off Jason Frasor and the Twins had runners on the corners with two outs. Kevin Gregg got Danny Valencia to pop out to the catcher for his 37th save.

Despite the loss, Pavano forced the heavy-hitting Blue Jays to play a rare game of small ball for seven innings, an encouraging sign for a Twins rotation that has been battered over the last week. Twins pitchers had allowed at least 10 runs five times in the precious seven games. LOUIS Jake Westbrook matched his career high with nine strikeouts and got his first RBI of the season in the St. Louis Cardinals 3-0 victory over the out -of-gas Colorado Rockies on Friday night. Dexter Fowler had two hits and struck out twice for the Rockies, who have lost ot their past 12 in a ldte-season treefall that began with them one game out of first place in the NL West and left them eight games behind at game time. Both teams have had disappointing second halves, entering with identical 83-76 records. The Rockies, who were shut out for the first time since Aug.

19 at Los Angeles, had won it of the previous 13 against St. Louis. Westbrook (4-4) allowed four hits, but two of them came in the eighth and he left leading 3-0 with the bases loaded with two outs. Trever Miller got Carlos Gonzalez on an easy comebaeker to end the threat, and Ryan Franklin finished for his 27th save in 29 chances. Westbrook had been 2-for-22 with 12 strikeouts before driving in Brendan Ryan with an opposite -field single otf Jorge de la Rosa (8-7) in the second, the second RBI ot his career.

Allen Craig had a run -scoring groundout in the first and Craig doubled and scored on Matt Pagnozzis squeeze bunt in the sixth tor a 3-0 lead. De la Rosa gave up three runs and five hits in seven innings and lost his third straight start, although he allowed three or fewer runs for the 13th time in 14 starts. Manager Jim Tracy rewarded de la Rosa for his strong comeback from a finger tendon injury by playing his everyday lineup, and will do the same tonight when Ubaldo Jimenez goes for his 20th victory against Kyle Lohse.
