Candidates' Nighf today in borough The White Haven Chamber of Commerce will host Candidates' Night today at the White Haveji Community Building, north end of Main Street. Jake Ripa, county commissioner candidate, will speak at 6:30 p.m., followed by Crestwood School Board candidates Naomi Bases, Mike Hanlon, Emilia Kramer, Jeffrey Hirt, Louise Fino, Mark Allen, and Bill Jones. An intermission will follow. County candidates will speak beginning at 8:30 p.m.

John Peters, coroner candidate will begin, followed by commissioner candidates Jim Burns, Phil Struzzeri, Stephen A. Urban, and Parker Bartley. Late-responding candidates will speak after Bartley. The event should end by 9:30. Each candidate will speak for three minutes, then answer questions posed by moderator Seth Isenberg.

Refreshments will be served. 1 WAHSAA DINNER The annual Memorial Day dinner sponsored by the Weatherly Area High School Alumni Association will be served at Salem U.C.C. on May 31 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Get tickets now from Jack Koehler at 427-4601, Pete Garber at 427-8058, or Tim Frable at 427-4867.

If you have a reservation form, send it to Koehler at 108 Hudsondale Weatherly, along with your check for the proper number of tickets that you want. Your tickets will be held at the door for you. Terry M. Schiavone, Freeland, are celebrating their 25l wedding anniversary today. Mrs. Schiavone is the former Joyce Malloy. They have three children, Heather, Terrah and Terry II.

HONORED John Kruk, White Haven Poconos, a Freeland Post Office carrier, was honored for 25 years of service. Presentation of a 25-year pin and congratulations were made by Postmaster John Butala, left, to Kruk and his wife, Carol. Fellow employees celebrated the occasion with a lunchtime pizza party. A congratulatory letter was received from Edward Burke, Harrisburg District manager. Kruk started his postal career in 1974 as a clerk in Herndon, and in 1978 became a city carrier in Moriches, N.Y.

He transferred to Freeland in 1990. He served for three years in the USMC from 1954 to 1957. He and his wife married in 1958. They have three sons, a daughter, and three grandchildren. John plans to retire in October.

President Bob Kester will conduct the business part of the meeting.

Reports will be submitted on the recent hoagie sale and the barbecue chicken dinner scheduled for June 26. Lion Moon will be chairman of the event. The Quakake Lions would like to thank those who volunteered during the recent cleanup day on Quakake Road and who helped at the hoagie sale, especially Mary Jean Searfoss and family. Amanda Zacharias Senior of the month Amanda Zacharias, the daughter of Donald and Melanie Zacharias, Buck Mountain Road, Weatherly, has been selected as senior of the month for April at Weatherly Area High School. Zacharias is in the academic curriculum and is a consistent first honors student.

She is a member of the girls' varsity basketball and softball teams and the senior Envirothon team. She serves as treasurer of the senior class and as historian of the Future Business Leaders of America. She is also a member of the school band, Carbon County band, Student Government Association, National Honor Society, and SPARC. In the community, Zacharias has done volunteer work for the March of Dimes and American Cancer Society. She is also a blood donor for the American Red Cross and is a Sunday school teacher at her church.

She will attend Bloomsburg University and plans on seeking a dual certification in secondary education with a concentration in mathematics and elementary education. Sponsors for the month are Garber Insurance and Finance Services and Summit Bank, both in Weatherly. MMI expansion hearings set A review of a major land development application submitted by MMI Preparatory School will take place Thursday at 7 p.m. before the Foster Township Planning Commission. The hearing was noted in the report by the township zoning officer, Keith Wheeler, at the township supervisors' meeting Monday evening.

It also was announced in a public notice by the planing commission secretary, Dorothy V. DeNoia. A zoning hearing on the MMI expansion also is scheduled by the Foster Township Zoning Hearing Board on May 26. In other actions, the supervisors also set the tap-on fee for new connections of the Ag-Mar sewer at $500. A meeting will be held May 25 at 6 p.m.

Janelle Heydt Borough girl gets scholarship offers Janelle Heydt, daughter of Gary and Melodie Heydt, Indian Run Road, Weatherly, has been offered scholarships from several colleges and universities. She has been offered the $26,000 academic scholarship from Shenandoah University, an $18,000 achievement scholarship from Wilkes University; a $32,000 Bomberger Scholarship from Ursinus College, and the $34,000 Valedictorian's scholarship from Susquehanna University. She is a senior enrolled in the college preparatory curriculum at Weatherly Area High School. She is a member of the band, county band, Student Government Association, Future Business Leaders of America, and the Science Olympiad Team. She serves as editor-in-chief of the high school yearbook, and editor of the school newspaper.

She is also a member of the National Honor Society, the senior envirothon team, and the German Honor Society. She was the Weatherly Area High School Senior of the Month for October, and the Hazleton Elks Senior of the Month for November. In the community, Heydt serves as the vice president of the Weatherly 4-H Club and is a member of the Lehighton Community Band. She represents Weatherly Area High School on the CAN DO Board of Directors and studies dance at the Joan Sacco Dance Studio in Hazleton. She is a youth deacon on her church consistory and a Sunday School teacher.

She was also accepted at West Chester University. She plans to attend Shenandoah University to major in pharmacy. QUILTING CLASS Weatherly Area Community Library will sponsor a quilting class Friday at 7 p.m. The quilt block will be churn dash. Items needed to bring are material, needle, thread, thimble, ruler, scissors, pencil and notebook.

North Side Softball starts Arson awareness class held The North Side Softball League is under way for another season. Regular league play will be on this week at the Higland and Eckley fields and the formal opening will take place with 14 of the league's 15 teams in action Sunday. Wednesday Calello's vs. ANNIVERSARY And Mrs. Thomas Mr. Howanitz, 134 Adams Freeland, celebrated their 40 wedding anniversary over the weekend. A dinner was held in their honor for family and friends at the Top of the Eighties, hosted by son and daughter-in-law Tom and Jenn Howanitz.

Many years ago she worked as a clerk in the Sandy Run Post Office. TOPS 1172 is setting goals Freeland Chapter 1172 of TOPS had as its program topic "Setting Goals" at last week's meeting.

The presentation was made by Marie Dancho. TOPS will meet this evening at 6 at the Freeland Borough Building. There were 14 members in attendance at last week's meeting, a high, and a weight loss of five pounds was recorded. Wendy Schade again was queen for the week. Dancho was the 5050 winner and Mary Lou Potoskie was the straw draw winner.

The forbidden food for the week was chocolate and the free food was fat-free ice cream. Dancho also presented a short quiz called "Attitude," which was taken by all. A new contest begins tonight. Noted is that it would be a great night for new members. 4 The meeting closed at 7:30 with the TOPS closing poem.

HORSESHOES START The clang of the quoit against the hobber will echo through the lower Freeland Public Park starting this evening as horseshoes for the season start. But, before the play at 6, there'll be a work party starting at 5. Volunteers everybody interested are invited at both times. There will be refreshments. BOOSTERS RUMMAGE The Freeland Booster Club's rummage sale at the Public Park will be on all this week.

Good, clean useable items for sale can be brought to the park pavilion each evening from 6 to 8, Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Sunday from 1 to 4 p.m. These also are the sale hours. SDCTH BIRTHDAY Todd Miller, son of Francis and Judy (Fox) Miller, Freeland, turns 6 today.

Todd is the grandson of William and Anna Mae Fox, Freeland, and Francis and Nancy Millker, White Haven. A family party was held in his honor Friday and a school party was held Saturday. signups slated On March 14 local firefighters, EMS and fire personnel received a training class called Arson Awareness for Emergency Response Personnel. The Carbon County Fire Chiefs in conjunction with the Pennsylvania State Police Fire Marshal's Division sponsored the class. The class was held at Citizens' Fire Co. No. 1 of Weatherly.

State police fire marshal Trooper Daniel Balliet of the Hazleton barracks was the instructor. The course, although focused on fire personnel, is appropriate for all emergency responders (fire, fire police, police officers, and EMS) who might arrive first on the scene of a fire. Its goal is to prepare these "first on the scene" responders to make observations and take actions which will help fire investigators Sun Valley Motors, the last-place team last season in the North Side Softball League now is No. 1, tied for first-place with three other teams after opening night action in the league Monday. Playermanager Russel Cherone's Sun Valleyers hung on for a 16-15 win with a bottom of the 7 rally against Jimbo's.

Despite the 33 runs, there were no homers. Other action: Battered Mug 10 Medash's 7. A last inning spurt also featured hoops, camp Signups continue for the Pizza Basketball League at the Freeland YMCA. The league offers summer basketball play for boys entering sixth, seventh and eighth grades this fall. Games are played Sundays.

There are registration fees for YMCA members and non-members. Questions can be directed to the YMCA, 636-3640. The YMCA's Tom Landers and Joe Flanagan also announced details for the Freeland YMCA Basketball Camp. The dates are: third- and fourth-grade boys, June 22-25, 9 a.m. to noon; fifth- and sixth-grade boys, June 22-25, 1 to 4 p.m.; fifth- through eighth-grade John D.

Carbon County COMMISSIONER Proven girls, June 28-July 1, 1 to 4 p.m.; and seventh- and eighth-grade boys, July 5-8, 1 to 4 p.m. The camp motto is, "Learn the game the Freeland YMCA way." There will be awards, free T-shirts and personal evaluation. There is a registration fee and the deadline is June 18 at 9 p.m. Applications are available at the YMCA.
