Youth Program Lauded as Aid to Addicts 775T5Z- 2 Tv 3 IS fm i fiU 1 I vwiwt' ilad Dec Pi By Hal Edwards Tribune Correswmlent RICHFIELD A program which fur produced highly successful results, especially to young people, has been recognized as one of the most effective in rehabilitation of alcoholics and drug users in the southern Utah area. Raphael Brugger, full-time employee with the Six County Commissioners Organization drug and alcoholic recovery program, said that presently there are 18 youths enrolled in the Younger-Brighter Side program of Alcoholics Anonymous. Most of these kids are dual addicted, Brugger said. They have both a drug and alcoholic problem.

Most of those who eventually get into the program began with marijuana use, Brugger said. Brugger said the effeet of marijuana use in combination with alcohol is a major problem among youth in the area. The Younger Brighter Side program is affiliated with AA. but because most of those attending AA are older, a program which would attract younger people who can relate to each other, has proven highly successful. Brugger works with law enforcement officers, courts and adult probation officers to get his program before those people who are in need of help.

Last year. he. along with others in the program, gave presentations in area schools. Many programs were presented on the officers' own time and at their own expense and included visits to schools as far away as Dug way. We are willing to go anyplace, anytime to help someone with an alcohol or drug problem, Brugger explained.

The program includes a presentation of facts and figures on drug and alcohol use; presentation of a drug display, including what is being used and its individual effects, and an explanation of how this problem is treatable. Removing the stigma from alcohol and drug treatment is one of the biggest battles we have in trying to get people in the program, Brugger said. Once people will admit to themselves they need help and want help, we can do them some good, he added. STRAPPED?
