M2-THE SUN.TtLEGRAM Sunday, Auauit 30, 197U Dick Butkus-- 'I Personally Don't Like Anybody' The Bears give me certain responsibilities." Hjs inference was that no rookie could handle them. No veteran could, either. His range is from sideline to sideline and he can go deep on pass coverage, too. time, Butkus believes, before they can be grouped ith the masters. "Experience is the key," he argued.

"The more you learn, the more you can compensate. Each year you get more knowledgeable. You can't load down a rookie as you can a veteran. By JERRY MAG EE Coplv New Service He's Dick Butkus and he hates everybody. I had inquired into his regard for quarterbacks who happen to line up opposite the Chicago Bears.

"I personally like anybody," answered Butkus. "I don't like to get involved with people on the field." Butkus plays football in a state of constant irritation. Richard Marvin Butkus, by disposition and physical makeup, would seem to have been put in this world to play the position he does. soil of a unique position," he said of it. It requires size.

The 6-3 Butkus weighs between 252 and 255, although when the regular National Football league season begins he will plav at between 240 and 248. If Butkus does not feel he is properly aggravated while he is preparing for a game, he goes around seeking a source of anger. I just look around until I see some players laughing or fooling around," he explained, "and then I feel irritated." Once in this mood, Butkus remains in it. His is an even temperament angry all the time. 'Sometimes," he admitted, "it gets me in trouble." Shoemaker Within 8 Wins It takes mobility.

It demands ferocity. Some thought is required. "You've got to have a combination of things," said Butkus. No one thing is any more important than another. If you have speed, it's helpful.

Size, agility, these things count. You have to react, to have good football instinct. And you have to acknowledge your weaknesses." Butkus. Nobis. Nitschke.

These are the names most often cited when great middle linebackers are discussed. Butkus stands above them as a unanimous All-NFL selection four of the five seasons he has played. This year some new names are arriving. There is Jim Files with the New York Giants, Jack Reynolds with the Los Angeles Rams and Bob Babich with the San Diego Chargers. (AP) Jockey Bill Shoemaker closed to within eight of Johnny Longden's all-time riding record yesterday with his victory but was shut out in four other races, including both divisions of the $22,500 Del Mar Derby.

The 39-year-old Shoemaker finished third aboard favored Mickey McGuire in the first division of the derby, but was moved up to second when Freeway outstanding back for the Highlanders. UC Riverside will possess enough strength in the back-field that Knecht was able to move 220-pound fullback Leon Braddock to tight end during spring practice. The versatile senior started at defensive tackle last year. fall, while Boers had a successful season at Golden West JC last year. The surprise of the group could be Hooks, who is returning after a year's absence as an exchange student in Kenya.

Hooks, a 175-pound junior, was the 1968 Intrepid Dealing Valiant Trouble RIVERSIDE New UC Riverside head football coach Gary Knecht greeted 5 5 players this week when the Highlander football squad npened fall practice for the Sept. 19 opener against Sonoma State in the Highlander Stadium. Knecht moves up to the head coaching position after five years as the Highlander defensive boss. The new head coach faces a tremendous rebuilding job in the next two weeks as most of his offensive and defensive lines were depleted by graduation. Knecht welcomes back 21 lettermen including four offensive and five defensive starters and 15 JC transfers.

Heading the list of returning veterans are senior wide receiver Bob Olson (185), senior linebacker Terry Hax-ton (190), and senior cor-nerback Bob Shook (185). Knecht expects the Highlander trio to be prime candidates for post-season honors. Olson, who set a new school record in pass receptions for a single game last year, will be shooting for most of the Highlander career records in his senior season. Olson and senior wide receiver Rich Biffle give the Scots plenty of experience in the reception category, but the main problem may lie at quarterback. Three candidates will battle for the important quarterback position in the Highlander passing oriented offense.

Returning letterman Butch Murphy, sophomore Bill Krizman and newcomer John Fulton will vie for the starting nod. All three candidates saw equal duty in the spring game and Knecht figures the next two weeks will be an important factor in determining the season's starter. With the quarterback role still in doubt, Knecht still points out that the Highlanders will have the strongest backfield in the school's history. Returning lettermen Howard Pierce and Chris Angelo, JC transfers Dan Boers and Ben Ruiz, and Tyrone Hooks will give the Spots plenty of deapth. Pierce and Angelo saw spot duty last with a well-timed port tack start and held it most of the way up the first leg of the 24.3-mile course in a 10-12 knot westerly breeze.

But Intrepid's skipper, Bill Ficker, finally gained a controlling position after a seesaw battle and Intrepid was three boat lengths ahead when they tacked for the first mark. Intrepid led by 37 seconds at the first mark, stretched her lead to 1:28 at the end of the second reaching leg and to 4:08 at the second windward mark. NEWPORT, R.I. (AP) Intrepid administered what might have been the final blow to Valiant's hopes of defending the America's Cup by winning yesterday's race in the final trials by two minutes, 34 seconds on Rhode Island Sound. It was Intrepid's fifth straight victory over Valiant and her eighth victory against one defeat in a series which started Aug.
