musical Between Plays Go Backstage Or Take a Falcon Field Trip BY STEE LAW SPECIAL TO THE TRIBL'N CEDAR CITY seen and Comedy of Errors You've heckled the Greenshow actors and bought tarts from the wenches You're a regular Utah Shakespearean Festival connoisseur But if you haven't taken the tour of the Adams Theatre backstage or been on Martin Tyner's falconry field trip you haven't seen the whole festival staged every summer on the campus of Southern Utah University Raptor biologist Tyner wows two Greenshow audiences a week with his golden eagle prairie falcon and Hams hawk dispersing falconry facts with itty one-liners and practical facts His field tour is much the same except that it's hours long and takes place in the desert 15 miles north of Cedar City The field trip is offered three times a week Wednesday Friday and Saturday Patrons meet in front of the SUU Auditorium at 8 a pile into vans and shuttle into raptor country On the first stop Tyner points out the nest of a Swainson hawk family He sets up a spotting telescope and dials in on the nest As the tourists take turns haw gaw king Tyner tells them that the Swainson hawk migrates to Argentina to winter every September It returns to Cedar City in March or April Over the course of the season tours have watched two adult hawks feed their two fledglings One group had the good fortune to witness one of the fust flight a bird of prey takes its first Right it's always an Tyner told his tour group The bird as standing on the edge of the nest stretching its wings when a gust of wind blew it out of the nest where it wobbled to a crash landing about 50 feet away According to Tyner most first flights are like that The tour then travels to the Parowan Gap where a pair of golden eagles has a nest The nest Tyner explains is 6 feet deep and 6 feet across large enough to roll your sleeping bag across although I wouldn't suggest it To two hungry eagles look like a pig in a blanket Tyner also brings his own trained falcon on the tour and demonstrates how he gets the birds to go from chasing a leather pigeon which he swings on a string to dive-bombing jack rabbits and ducks Tourists also see the nests of the ferruginous falcon and ravens as well as Fremont Indian petroglyphs The excursion costs $10 For $30 you can get a college credit Transportation water and spotting scopes are provided Meanwhile at tho Festival: A backstage tour of the Utah Shakespearean Festival is also available to anyone interested in being called or Lady" for an hour straight Patrons can see how a set is put together how fake blood is made and how scene changes are performed In short they get to see how much work goes on behind the scenes to produce a play They see how slip stages work and how the lighting and sound and curtains are coordinated and they learn about the festival and its history The Utah Shakespearean Festival employs 23 year-round employees The rest 300 of them amve six weeks before the first curtain goes up Only 80 of the 300 employees are actors The rest are set designers sound and lighting technicians wig and costume makers makeup artists and hairdressers Most actors have parts in three plays Set designers built 60 pieces of furniture this year and wig makers created 84 lgs and 41 beards and mustaches A wig takes between 24 and 36 hours to make More than 30000 hours were spent making 600 costumes used in this six plays An additional 9000 hours will be spent during the summer maintaining costumes igs and props Prop makers spent their working hours June 17-30 trying to get Macbeth's severed head just right It stored upstairs in the Adams Memorial Theatre next to other body parts While actors perform a scene the stage crew is feverishly getting together the next scene's props When the scene is done the set glides out on a slip stage as another slides Actors in back to back scenes sometimes need to change costumes With one set slipping off and the next right back on the changes have to be fast Quick-change artists are waiting to np actors down to their skivvies and into a new costume One full wig and costume change this year is done in 20 seconds logistical planning for all of this is akin to a says tour guide Todd Denning who also acts "The Winter's and IV Part One And have you ever wondered why is often referred to as Scottish or The reason is simple says Denning- you're in theater and say the word or quote part of the play it will bring you bad luck If you accidentally say it don't worry the curse can be reversed To nd yourself of the curse run outside spin three circles and spit on the ground Last season the Utah Shakespearean Festival sold more than 130 000 tickets a record that could fall this year And don't forget to step on Meryl Streep before you
