Tenn Utah Coach Wayne Howard had a premonition of thine to come Saturday when he predicted before the game, Coarh Johnny Majors needs a big win to take off the heat from some fans whove expected more than a lft-12 1 record and if he ran get a bundle of points.

I expect he will Major delighted the second largest home crowd in Tennessee history Saturday night, a festive gathering of KS 7K3 fans, by slaughtering mistake prone Utah. 51 18 Utah was in the ball game in the first quarter, stifling the Volunteer offense by taking a 3-0 lead at the quarter on Jeff Hucko's 31 yard field goal But then Jimmy Streater, who set a single-season total offense record for the Volunteers a year ago, got his his offense untracked and in an eicht m'nute surge Tennessee scored three touchdowns en route to its second victory of the season, as Utah went down to its second defeat of the season and the second loss for Utah at Neyland Stadium The utes lost here 40-7 1975 In Tennessee, football fans don't pay to see the coach win the Good Fellow" award by taking it easy on the visiting team, and the Vnls were still passing and trying to score with a second unit quarterback the fourth quarter And fully three fourths of the fans W'ere still the stands to cheer as sub quarterback Jeff Olszewski scored on a six yard run with 51 seconds left in the game The 51 points was the highest score by a Tennessee team since the Vols beat Memphis State, 55-16, 1969 The final score was the highest total against Utah Coach Howard since Oklahoma beat Utah, 62 24, the opening game of Howards first season in 1977 The game was decided in the second quarter when Tennessee scored three times in eight minutes, with Utahs pass defense and the punting game contributing to the demise of the upset hopes Streater, scrambling on a broken play, spotted Willie Gault behind Utahs All-America hope Jeff Griffin, who had come up to stop the running threat The play covered 69 yards, and it tipped Utahs mitt that the pass defense was vulnerable A 29-yard punt by Todd Speer gave the ball to the Vols on their 48, and in 12 plays Tennessee had its second score The big play was a 14-yard pass to Brian Ingram to the one Gary Moore dove in for the score for a 14-3 lead Utahs Rondle W'oods fumbled the ensuing kickoff, and Tennessee had the ball on the Utah 17 Streater lofted a pass to Anthony Hancock for the touchdown that eventually proved to be the winner U'ah got a break, and a new lease on life, late in the half when Glenn Ford fumbled and Steve Clark got the ball for Utah States Bradshaw Sparks Rout of Rams cn I lah on the dI 22 ith I hvd llodgc at qu.irterb.K 1 tali diove to score, with passes to Doug at son and Jim Teahan st ttmg up a two yatd explosion by Mel I lelds The stoie was 21 10 at the half, and the small I tah theering section had ho(es But Tennessee wasted little time driving 8U yaids with the second half kit kotf, wilh Streater getting the score on a 36 yard scamper The dnve took only one minute to rover the 80 yards in four plays Center ott Sotneh filed the ball high over Speers head on the next punt attempt and the Ite punter had to fall on the ball in the end zone for a safety anti a 30 10 Tennessee lead A 23 yard Utah punt set up another st ote, with Streater passing 14 yards to Reggie Harper for a 37 10 lead at the end of the third quarter The Vol line swarmed Speer on his next punt with Mike Terry blocking the kick and John Wade catching the ball in mid air and running it back to the Utah 17 On the third play of the fourth quarter, Olszewski scored from the nine on a keeper Ricky Hardin at quarterback got Utah its final score, passing to Teahan for seven, handing off to Tony Lindsay for 33, passing to Robbie Richeson for six, and handing off to Lewis Walker, 'who scampered 21 yards for the touchdown Utah's attempted onside kick was converted into Tennessees final score Coach Howard said after the game, This is the worst the defense has played in two years Few would argue the point Tennessee rolled up 490 yards total offense, 249 rushing and 241 passing. Despite the one-sided whipping, the Utes were not discouraged in the locker room, seeming to echo Howards philosophy. He said, "A loss is a loss, whether you get beat one point or 40 We played poorly, thats all. One disappointment was the play of Del Popcorn" Rodgers, Utahs sensational running back of last year, who was used only sparingly Del isnt running as well as some of the others," an assistant coach explained Rodgers carried the ball four times for 16 yards Utahs most effective rusher was Walker with 82 yards 10 rushes Coach Majors said, I thought Utah fought us hard until they got tired, and we began to knock them out of the front line I was glad the game gave us an opportunity to play some of our younger players Howard, adding a final thought, said, Going into the game I thought we could win, and at halftime I still thought we could "We just gave them two touchdowns in the first half This is the first time our defense has let us down in two years This game will help us if somehow we start fighting and get our game together," he said hopefully the second half, said Devine I was very disappointed in our loss I felt we had the plavers who did extremely well, also, but basically, the credit goes to Purdue Pudue certainly is more physical than we are Because of key injuries, Devine was foried to substitute frequently You cant win a game like this by fooling a team like Purdue," he said.

You have to be physical with them you have to win it with strong defense and a good running game Purdue rallied from a two-touchdown deficit to its first home victory over the Irish 10 years and its first since 1974, before the largest crowd ever to see a football game in Indiana With 70 567 fans looking on Purdue grabbed a 21 20 lead at the end of the third period on Jones second touchdown a two yard run and John Seidel's (onversion and the Boilermakers added an instil ance touchdown on a 6 yard pass from Heirmann to Bart Burrell nnduav through the final period Hermann who a'so passed for Purdue first touchdown a 15vard strike to Dave young completed 14 of 20 aerials for 1H vards He was intercepted once Jones capped an 80 yard drive in the third period with a one yard touchdown run set up by Herrmann passes Jones second tally was set up by Marcus McKinme, who intercepted a Tim koegel pass, returning the ball 27 yards to the Notre Dame eight Notre Dame, which whipped Michigan in its opener last week, used three quarterbacks in place of the injuied Rusty Iasch Koegel started and passed four yards to Nick Vehr for Notie Dames second touchdown in the thrid period, giving the Irish a 20-7 lead In the first stanza, the Irish converted a fake field goal attempt into a 17 yard touchdown toss from Greg Knafelc to Dean Masztak i 4 0 A close friend, 1 Bud Jack, claims hes caught the Tennessee athle-h tic director actu-Jj ally asleep with his fork in his mouth i Another friend, watching John 1Vi Bobs sleepy smile and hearing his guttural chuckL claims Woodruff acts like a skunk eatin June bugs But rarely are appearances more deceptive, for if Woodruff appears to tie easy-going and sleepy, hes anything but that You just have to check the progress the Volunteers have made in all sports under his athletic directorship to refute any doubts as to his ability to get things done As soon as the last game is played this fall Neyland Stadium, workman will rip out temporary and bleacher seats and replace the 9,000 old seats with 18,500 new seats This will boost the seating capac ity to 90,000, second only to the University of Michigan among college stadia Last year, for seven games, the Volunteers averaged 83,785 fans This is with a student body o' 29,721 and a Knoxville population of 174,587 And unlike metropolitan Salt Lake City, Knoxville does not have any towns and cities of appreciable size in the area Football interest was the result of a great selling job on the part of the university and the realization on the part of the town merchants and fathers that an attraction which could bring thousands into the city had to be good for business Woodruff, in his 17th year as athletic director, pioneered the well-balanced athletic program in the Southeastern Confeience, which had been known as a football conference for years The exception was Kentucky, which was a "basketball school under Coach Adolph Rupp Tennessee lived up to the football school reputation under the leadership of Gen Robert Neyland (1926- 52) But with Woodruff preaching any sport worth having is worth supporting, the Volunteers expanded their program of excellence. Since 1969, Tennessee captured five SEC all-sports championships and the Vols have finished first, second or third all-sports success in the conference 10 of the last 11 years Tennessee won its first national championship in cross country in 1972 The NCAA track and field champion- snip followed in 1974 Tennessee swimmers won their NCAA championship in 1978 and the basketball team has been a powerhouse in recent years The baseball team nas a new grandstand, a glass-enclosed pi ess box and dugouts, at a cost of $68,000 The tennis team has a new complex complete with stadium and pi ess building A practice dome, covering 251 118 40. consisting of vinyl coated nylon, is used for all varsity sports Two full-size tennis courts occupy two-fifths of the area covered by the bubble and the other three-fifths is covered by the same Tartan surface which covers the football field The growth of the Neyland Stadium reads like the rings in a tree trunk, ith a continued series of expansions The original field was finished in 1921, with concrete stands for 3,200 fans In 1926, same year the University of Utah opened its 30 (100-seat stadium, the Tennessee stadium was expanded to 6.800 capacity In 1930, it went up to 17.8t0 capacity and in 1938 its 31,390 seats finally topped Utahs capacity Utahs stadium now seats about 29,000 fans, Tennessees seats 80,250 now and will seat 90,000 for 1980 Much of the credit for this enthusiasm and growth must be handed to Woodruff, who performed similar feats of development his 10-year stint as athletic director at the Umversitv of Florida A tackle for three yeais on the Tennessee teams that won 23 games and lost only five. Woodruff coached as an assistant at Tennessee, at West Point and Georgia Tech before taking over the head job at Baylor He was an assistant coach again at Tennessee for two years before becoming athletic director in 1963 Bob may appear to lie sleeping but he can give a few lessons to a lot of guvs who jump around and convince everyone they are wide awake OlwnalHn Wart! The Aggies, getting the breaks and good field position, labored through the first 25 minutes of the half with only a 3-0 lead Steinke got those points midway through the opening period on a 37-yard field goal, a line drive, knuckleball boot CSUs Larry Jones tries to break from Aggie tackier By Ray Herbat Tribune Sports Writer LOGAN No longer is Craig Bradshaw merely the brother of a famous quarterback, and no longer can the Aggie defensive unit be looked upon as the Leaky 11 Bradshaw, starting his first game at quarterback in place of tne injured Eric Hippie, and the strong showing of the Utah State defense, ied the Aggies to a surprisingly lopsided 24 0 victory over Colorado State on a warm afternoon here Saturday Hippie, the nations total offense leader after two games, sat out the entire game with a shoulder injury, but any pre-game fears from the 17,960 Aggie fans were laid to rest by Bradshaw Co as the Utags posted their first win of the season Largest Opening Crowd The crowd at Romney Stadium was the largest for an opening game ever for Utah Slate Bradshaw who cut his teeth on some conservative football in the first quarters while getting the feci of the game, directed a strong offensive attack that kept the ball away from the Rams for all but one drive Coming into the game, USUs defense had yielded 83 points and almost 1,000 yards in its first two games But the Aggie defenders took the fight to the Rams offense, and the shutout was the first for Utah State since the opening game of the 1978 season when USU blanked Idaho State, 10 0, in Japan Utah States kicking game was superb as placement specialist Steve Steinke accounted for 10 points on three field goals and an extra point Guy McClure got off three punts that went in excess of 50 yards to keep the Rams in trouble Steinke booted field goals of 37, 49 and 52 ards, the latter coming up one yard short of the school record First Half Touchdown Bradshaw threw a first-half touchdown pass of 18 yards to Ken Thompson, then he fired a two-point conversion pass to tight end Ken Brown to give the Ags a 14 0 first-half lead The only touchdown in the second half came on a 58-yard Bradshaw to James Murphy pass the third quarter While his statistics were not all that impressive 8 for-18, 122 yards Bradshaw should have had a much bigger passing game Three bombs of 40 or more yards, perfectly thrown balls, were dropped by usually reliable receivers And on several occasions, Bradshaw was not permitted to complete passes because the Rams were guilty of pass interference The senior quarterback from I-ouisi-ana who waited patiently more than a full season for a chance to perform for Utah State, probably would have a 300 plus yard passing game had his throws not been dropped, or the Rams called for interference The defense was magnificent for all but one CSU drive, when the Rams took the second half kickoff and drove on the ground from their 20 to the USU 1, where the Aggies held CSU was limited to just 12 yards rushing in the first half, amt when Rams running star Larry Jons ft the game in the second period with a back injury, the CSU attack suflered ev cn more The Aggies goal line stand the thud quartet seemed to take the last bit of stau out of the 0 3 Rams l'd by lineman Rulon Jones, kellv Kirwan and Chris Albrittam, and After missing a 36-yard field goal attempt later in the fu st period, Steinke drilled a 49-yarder with 4 39 left in the half The kick, his longest ever until a 52 yard blast in the second half, cleared the back of the end zone by 10 yards Thompson atoned lor a missed touc h-down pass at 41 yards in the second quarter, when he later caught Bradshaw's 18yarder for the only touch-dowm of the first half, with just 26 seconds left Ram defender Dupree Branch fell down as Thompson made his cut to the corner, and Thompson easily made the reception Bradshaw then hit Ken Brown for the two-point conversion An obviously pleased Aggie Coach Bruce Snvder remarked after the victory The defense coming into this one had questioned itself somewhat, but the guys really came together today You really saw a lot of Aggies flying around, but we were very aggressive Our kicking game hadn't been particularly strong the first two games, but Guy and Steve, and our coverage teams, really played well They all put on a show I don't think any of my teams have been this prepared, emotionally, ever We were poised but not cocky -Tribune Staff Photo bv Frank A Porvhatu Saturday before leaving game with first half back injurs.
