cent or 60 per cent on its common stock If there is any more profitable way for the head of the Nickel Trust to spend his time than in Washington pointing out to the Senators and Congressmen the frightful insecurity of the nation it would be interesting to know how he could do it It need not be said that he is not a great patriot and it can not be said that he is not a great business man It is not every man who can make patriotism a business and make it pay 20 per cent or 30 per AMAN may have the principles of Socialism pat He may be able to argue intelligently with an old party opponent He may intellectually comprehend the material significance of Socialism but unless he understands the spiritual meaning of Socialism he does not fully understand the most beautiful philosophy the world has ever knerwn No man understands Socialism unless he understands that Socialism is a movement of humanitarian aspects toward wider human fellowship and that there is in this grand brotherly movement no room for shallow selfishness That Socialism means literally and completely the unselfish co-operation of the members of the movement for the common advancement of the interests of all men and all women and that there is in this glorious co-operative movement no room for the selfish consideration of petty personal interests That Socialism means the loyal ad- herence of the members to the just principles of the organization and that there is in this movement no room for anything that conflicts with these principles That Socialism means the promulgation of new and broader social ideals ideals that will be the inspiration and the soul of a better civilization and that there is in this movement no room for any lesser or narrower ideals That Socialism means democracy the absolute and unconditional rule of the people not as a mere vote-catching phrase or brain-tickling dogma but as a realization of the fact that only the people can rule themselves intelligently in their own interests and that in the final analysis wherever the people do not rule themselves they are invariably ruled by a selfish designing and measured by the extent of their contribution to the needs an unintelligent minority History in the past has given too much attention to war and too little to the things that make for peace John Mullowney Company group These groups will be found well represented in the officers directors contributors and vice presidents for each and every year since the birth of the Navy Letin rr ttT Tavenner to the officers of the Navy Leape to- day The president of the league Colonel Robert Thompson was a happy selection indeed because the steel nickel and copper interests all of which will profit handsomely through war and preparation for war interlock beautifully through him and his International Nickel Company A Clark Montana king is president of the A Clark Wire Company and Colonel Thompson is one of his directors on that corporation Then too Colonel Thompson is president of the New York Metal Exchange The International Nickel Company also interlocks with the Midvale Steel Ordinance Co Corey being a director of International Nickel and president and director of the new Midvale corporation which was organized recently for $100000000 especially to handle the growing war-trafficking trade and is one of the largest war-trading firms in the United States International Nickel Company also interlocks with the Midvale concern through Ambrose Monell who is president of the International Nickel and a director of the Midvale Prosser another director of the International Nickel is one of the contributors to the funds of the Navy League Nickel also interlocks directly with the United States navy department through Brownson retired rear admiral who is a director of the International Nickel Company and on the pay roll of the government at a salary of $6000 a year which is three-fourths full pay there any asks Tavenner than purely patriotic ones why officers and directors of the I Interests Back Also Behind BY FREDERICK MONROE Washington have carefully compiled a list of the directors of the Navy League for every year from the day it was organized down to date There are nineteen men in the list of founders and of those nineteen the majority were connected with concerns and establishments which through interlocking directorates connect in turn with manufacturers of war materials and things which go into war materials Always a predominant number on the board of directors of the league are war traffickers or persons connected through interlocking directorates with the war-trust manufacturers The interests that are back of the- Navy League are exactly the same interests that are back of the war-trafficking firms and the group of individuals who are back of the war traffickers are the same men who are back of the great railroad companies of the United States the great steamship companies the express companies and the great Wall Street banks and even the Beef Trust is That is the broadside hurled at the men behind the campaign in the Navy League by Congressman Clyde Tavenner of Illinois in his latest speech before the House in which he completely riddled the league exposed the interests back of it showed the profits which members and directors of the league were getting from war contracts and dragged from its closet the skeleton of capitalist private profits in war munitions manufacture Here is the lbt of nineteen of the Navy League as it appears on page 32 of the February 1904 issue of the Navy League Journal the organ of the Navy Herbert Satterlee Miller Pierpont Morgan Benjamin Tracy iseth Low Clement A Griscom Thomas Lowry Timothy Woodruff Midvale Steel Company Anson Phelps Stokes George Westinghouse II- Sloan John Astor It Thompson Charles Schwab John McCook Harry Payne Whitney George Satterlee Palmer IT IS PERHAPS significant as Tavenner pointed out to the members of Congress that in subsequent publications of the Navy League the name of the MIDVALE STEEL COMPANY was omitted But Tavenner says it should be designed as No to whether has been profitable to this particular founder of the Navy he said as to whether the Navy proposed $500000090 bond issue for battleships and so forth would be increasingly profitable the official records of the navy department itself will be Tavenner then shows that the complete record of the Midvale sales of armor plate to Uncle Sam since 1902 (not including other materials sold to the army and navy) totaled 43399 tons of armor at a cost to the government of $20375858 an average price per ton of $42099 Patriot No 2 is Charles Schwab said Tavenner at that time president of the United States Steel Corporation owner of the Carnegie Steel Company Some of his fellow' directors of the steel corporation at that time were Pierpont Morgan John Rockefeller Henry Rogers Henry Frick and Elbert Gary Previous to the formation of the United States Steel Corporation Mr Carnegie had been president of the Carnegie Steel Tavenner then names twenty-nine other corporations many directly connected with steel manufacture with which Schwab became connected He is now president and chairman of the board of directors of the Bethlehem Steel Corporation one of the largest war-trafficking firms in the world the common stock of which as corporation controls the San Francisco Dry Dock Company and the Union Iron Works Dry Dock Company of San Francisco the Fore River Shipbuilding Company Harland Hollingsworth Corporation and the Titusville Forge Company These various corporations build ships marine engines and so on Mr Schwab's Bethlehem steel company has obtained more contracts for armor plate from the United States government than any other firm It has sold Uncle Sam since 1887 95007 tons of armor plate at a cost of $42-344937 an average price per ton of $44570 Mr Schwab as Tavenner pointed out is not only famous as a founder of the Navy League but gained considerable notoriety in a government investigation during the fifty-third Congress on of Armor Plate which contained evidence of fraud upon the government by the Carnegie company a says Tavenner that armor plates containing were palmed off on the government and later used on battleships of the American navy that these cavities were secietly and kept from the government inspectors Mr Schwab one of the founders of the Navy League was general superintendent of the Carnegie company when this fraudulent work was Patriot No 3 in the list of founders of the league is Morgan Carnegie Steel said Tavenner had representation in the list of nineteen founders above alluded to in the person of the late Morgan who -was the organizer and a director of United States Steel which controls the Carnegie Tavenner gives a list also of fifty-eight other corporations in which Morgan was a director Carnegie Steel Company which had representation in the 1904 list of founders of the Navy League and is represented now among the directors life members and contributors to the Navy League perhaps more than any other one continued Tavenner contracts from the government for armor plate during the last year aggregating Since 1890 Tavenner showed how this concern had sold the government 89933 tons of armor at a total of $39783497 or $44236 per ton on the average he said three firms which comprise the armor ring in this country and all of which are represented among the founders of the Navy League have drawn down contracts for 223339 tons of armor plate from the government and have charged an average of $439 a ton for AFTER THUS SHOWING that the three concerns which have a monopoly of the manufacture of armor plate the most expensive single item in naval construction were all represented among the of the Navy League Tavenner proceeded to show up the other members of the immortal nineteen gentlemen A he said a fellow director with Morgan of the United States Steel Corporation which controlled the armormaking Carnegie Steel Company He was also a director of the Wm Cramp Ship and Engine Building Company and the Electric Boat
