(Gradient hick) :13 Shea 22 12:40 A-23210 HATTIESBURG Miss This should sound familiar -0 Utah State faces a heavily favored team from the Deep South The gritty Aggies hang tough and have a chance to win the game But a late interception kills USU's chances for a game-winning drive and Southern Miss escapes with the win It happened last September and again Saturday This time Matt Sauk tossed an interception with just over a minute to play as the Golden Eagles held on for a 31-24 win It was a disappointing game" said USU Coach John Smith "We've just got to try to get bet' ter" Smith said the Ags might have had an even better chance to pull out a win if not for needing to stop the clock while USM was trying to milk it "We had a chance right up until The very end" Smith said "It's too bad we had to use up all our iimeouts to get the football back" The Golden Eagles might have been favored by 15 points but the Aggies (2-1) were having none of that After taking the opening kick- off Utah State used Abu Wilson to move down the field in no time With Wilson picking up 40 yards rushing and Nalda Jenkins grab bing a pair of passes USU took a 7-0 lead when Steve Smith took a safety-valve pass from Patrick Mullins for a 15-yard score But the ease of that score might lave taken the fight right out of the USU offense "We came out a little sluggish after the first drive" said Aggie receiver Nakia Jenkins "We were fired up the first possession I guess after that everything went down" USM not about to be embar- rassed by a Big West team in the heart of Southern football finally got its offense in sync and scored I 17 points to close the half with a 17-7 lead Heath Graham ineffective in directing the Southern Miss offense through two games engineered three second-quarter scoring drives USU came out from the locker room strong and marched down the field with a 16-play 71-yard drive capped by Wilson's 1-yard run But USM answered quickly The tailback tandem of Shaw and Booth needed only two plays to push the lead to 23-14 USM later ate a lot of the fourth-quarter clock and scored to go up 31-17 Nakia Jenkins brought USU to within one touchdown with a 13- yard pass from Sauk But that was it for USU 274V424 Continuous Entatainmen Dally1Oam-2am Oo 1A 4 ATELLIT SYSTEMS 1 r'-Trintat (Season 4 200 "(IF Passes Available Now! ri MING RCA pa0Gimly urroaralctirla' Dish
