shelter for abused and abandoned animals says it is willing to provide a permanent home for Na-das the collie-malamute mix condemned to die for chasing livestock But Jackson County is saying no We have taken dogs that were under court order to be destroyed in the past and we make a commitment to not adopting them out and putting them in a very facility where they are not exposed to the public said Estelle Munro office manager of Best Friends Animal Sanctuary a 200-acre compound near Kanab in southern Utah The nonprofit shelter has room for 1500 animals and currently is home to 600 dogs about a fourth of which are deemed unadoptable and kept in fenced yards for the rest of their lives Its a life-care facility Munro said Ten to 15 dogs will share that space and they are family to each other They have everything they could want toys food buddies 1 Thats what attorney Robert Babcock of Lake Oswego had in mind when he informed Jackson County officials of the sanctuarys offer by letter on Dec 2 But Jackson County Administrator Burke Raymond said Friday after a break-in at the county animal shelter that officials haven't talked to the Utah shelter and wont The commissioners tough stand doesnt surprise Scan Roach who has been fighting to save his dogs life since September 1996 Im just begging for them to release him to someone out- of state I do not cannot and will not understand why they wont do that he said They just wont accept anything else but to fcill him Jackson County also wont Jet Roach see Nadas before the dog is killed Instead Assistant County Counsel Steve Rinkle proposed in December that the county take pictures of the dog before hes killed Roach has found thousands of supporters but others wonder why hes making such a fuss about a dog They obviously dont have a dog or love a dog he said Meanwhile Jackson County has wheeled out documents it sgys proves the dogs real name is Na-tas or Satan spelled backwards On Friday Jackson County officials handed out copies of the animals dog license application signed by Roach on which the dogs name is spelled Natas ln addition officials provided a copy of an affidavit filed on behalj of December Mayor: Aryans Shouldnt March In Coeur DAlene THE ASSOCIATED PRESS COEUR DALENE Mayor Steve Judy says he doesnt want to approve a white-supremacist groups permit application for a downtown parade to celebrate Adolf Hitlers birthday But court rulings and constitutional guarantees may prevent the city from denying a permit he said Right now I dont want to approve it and Im looking at all my options Judy who has been mayor for just a month said Friday Aryan Nations leader Richard Butler is using the Internet to invite kinfolk from the four corners of the Earth to Coeur dAlene for what he calls the 100-man flag parade The event is planned for April 18 That is the same weekend as the annual Aryan Youth Assembly which marks Hitlers birthday The assembly attracts fewer than 100 neo-Nazi skinheads to the Aryan Nations compound near Hayden Lake about 10 miles north of Coeur dAlene Judy said his office received more than three dozen calls Friday and he senses a groundswell of community opposition to the parade Im sending a very strong message that we dont want them here he said Theyre not welcome and they dont represent our community Police officials are reviewing the application submitted Monday by the Aryan Nations The application apparently meets city requirements including the 45-day advance deadline Police officials and Butler were trying to agree on a time to start the parade Judy said he expects the permit application will arrive on his desk in a week or two The citys special-event process leaves final approval with the mayor and doesnt require a council vote Judy said Governor Lawmakers Fight N-Waste Continued from B-l Lawmakers also moved to relax day-care rules a move that drew little debate in its House committee hearing but intense criticism from child-care advocates As the bill is readied for review in the House Speaker Brown noted the measure has been crafted to address the concerns of in-home day-care providers in rural areas who find it difficult to meet current regulations The sponsoring senator has tried to address everyones needs" said Brown and its a good compromise" On Wednesday a legislative panel considered axing the Utah Technology Finance Corp an agency that lends taxpayer money to start-up companies to promote jobs Officials acknowledged problems in the agencys management And Rep Bill Hickman R-St George warned if an audit turns up more problems he probably would recommend liquidation On Thursday Granite School District students learned firsthand how democracy works They petitioned legislators to change the state crosswalk law so more space comes between parked cars and crosswalks not at intersections Another panel passed a bill that would make it harder for residents to get initiatives on election ballets On Friday the House Natural Resources Agriculture and Environment Committee advanced two bills aimed at keeping cigarettes out of the hands of youths Now theres nothing left but crumbling general manager and has received more than 500 applications for other jobs at the station He plans to hire around 35 employees this spring once the station has found suitable office and studio space and could have 50 employees by the fall He also plans a name change once Channel 16 goes on the air working WB into the call letters An application currently is before the Federal Communications
