Hinson, one of the early finishers, saw his Bo stand up all day and finished one-strokp ahead of John Jacobs, a late starter, who breezed in with a fifi. Hinson, nut in 31 and back in 34, called his round the best "since I can't remember when." Canadian veteran George Knudson and two little-known pros, Mike Spang and Rob Lewis, tied for third with fi7s. Next came rookie Lanny Wadkins and tour regulars Miller Barber, Ruddy Allin and Australian David Graham at fiS.

Thursday's scheduled first rniind was rained out. Hinson, 27, a lanky blond who overramp a childhood bout with polio that left, him with a withered left arm, had seven birrlies in his round. Hp canned three 22 foot putts and a pair of IB-footers for birdies. Thp preens were humpy and soggy from the heavy rain here the past several days. "You rpally.

had to put, a big stroke on it," said Hinson of the putting conditions. Jacobs agreed. "The greens looked bumpy hut the ball didn't roll ail that bad," he said. When darkness overtook the layout, 17 of the 150 players were still on the course. They were to resume their round this morning.

The low 50 scorers and ties will begin the 18-hole third-round when the 17 finish. Miss Ehret, a 30-year-old pro whose only triumph was the 1966 LPGA championship in her second year on the tour, was only two over par wlih a 74 going into the day's play. (AP) Shirley Englehorn saw a sub-par score and a three stroke lead melt away with the rain yesterday but birdied the last hole and retained sole possession of first place at the halfway point of the U.S. Women's Open Golf Championship with a three-over-par 147.

Miss Englehorn covered the front nine in two-under, 34, then lost a stroke with a bogey five on the 10th hole before thuridershowers held up play for nearly two hours. When she returned to the drenched Winged P'oot Golf Club East course, she carded three bogeys and a double bogey and reached the 18th in a tie with Gloria Ehret. Miss Englehorn blamed her rocketing score on the long delay.

"I lost my momentum in the clubhouse," the 31-year-old pro, who is one of the most consistent players on the tour, said. "I couldn't think. I just wasn't with it." While Shirley was pacing in the warmth of the clubhouse to limber her left leg, which has a fused ankle, Miss Barnett was huddled in a hotdog stand on the windswept course. "It was kinda spooky out there," she said. "We were right by the TV tower.

And it was so cold standing there in the mud." To make matters worse, the concessionaire closed down shop and left her and her fellow players hungry. Four strokes off the pace, at 151, were Rourassa, Retsy Cullen and Judy Rankin. Susie Maxwell Rerning, a former Open winner, surged from a first round 79 to a 73 for a 152. Others at. 152 were rookie pro Shelley Hamlin and Dede Owens.
