auperintenilent Dr Fleming The assistant superintendent Dr George Loyd recognitid him as having escaped from the asylum a fortnight ago and sought to engage his attention Dougherty had a loaded revolver in each hand and fired them almost simultaneousiy and Dr Loyd fell to the floor and instantly expired one bullet lodging in his throat and the other entering the bead Dougherty then left the asylum and started for the Kings County bosptal with the avowed intention of kiliing Dr Arnold one of the surgeons there but fortunately that gentleman was out From the latter place his ateps were lost until be was arrested at the New York terminus of the br du as be was alighting from a tra and taken to the Oak street station 118 arrest wee due to Dr Edwin Ashford of Washington one of the special enumerators who was taking the censua of the asylum at the time of the murder He followed Dougherty to the hospital where the murderer threatened to shoot him but he eluded the maniac Di Ashford had just come over the bridge after notifying the Brooklyn pollee reasoning that the murderer would returned to New York On the very next train Dougherty came and was arrerted lie still had the two revolvers and in his pockets were a number of manuscripts and several letters One of the letters was addressed to "Sint Mary Anderson-Navarro" and read: "My Mary: I must now bid you goodby I wish you all happiness Yiitt deeply wronged me but I understand the extenuating circumstances and freely forgive you It's ever thus I am hurt by those I ova I have no wish to have you now Mary be good
