The Salt Lake Tribune CALENDAR Friday September 29 1995 E3 Andy Garcia a Twin Treat in Steal Big The movies loosey-goasey feeling is a nice change of pace for Davis best known for tight thrill ers like The Fugitive and Under Siege Davis gives the movie a pleasantly eccentric flavor a candy-colored world in hich ma-nachi music happily (and quite logically) starts up at the slightest provocation Fine supporting performances threaten to steal the show from Arkins fast-talking con artist to Pantolianos sniveling lawyer But Garcia is clearly enjoying himself thrilled with the notion of playing George Bailey and Old Man Potter the antagonists from Capras Its a Wonderful Life in the same movie (There are also some nifty special effects to create the twin illusion capped by a clever scene in which the two Garcias appear in a room with 17 mirrors Steal Big Steal Little (rated PG-13 for one instance of marijuana use) has moments that will have you scratching your head But those are outnumbered by the times youll smile broadly at the movies sunny disposition I 546-3400 Kaysvme a Mm nyin FREE WILLY 2 P) 12 10 2 15 7 15 CASPER IPG) 12 15 2 20 4 55 A LITTLE PRINCESS (G) 12 20 2 25 7 05 FIRST KNIGHT (PG-13) 4 10 9 20 WHILE YOU WERE SLEEPING (PGM 30 9 15 CONGO (PG-13) 4 40 9 25 Blue Dress Wears Well With Denzel tSHWt Devil in a Blue Dress A deluxe treatment for Walter Mosleys re-luctant detective By Sean Means THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE Ezekiel Easy Rawlins isnt much different from Philip Marlowe or other detectives of that ilk He is a man trying to do right in a mixed-up world who discovers that a simple assignment is far more complicated and its only when hes in over his head that he can fight back There is one important difference between Rawlins and those other sleuths: Rawlins is a black man so he must endure the added obstacles that racism poses Rawlins is flip hero of four detective novels by Walter Mosley one of which has now been made into a richly detailed movie Devil in a Blue Dress Having just lost his aircraftmanufacturing job Rawlins (played by Denzel Washington) needs some money fast to make his mortgage payment Enter DeWitt Albright (Tom Sizemore) a shadowy fixer who offers to pay Rawlins to find a missing woman Daphne Monet (Jennifer Beals) But what should be an easy job grows more complicated and more dangerous as Monets trail becomes tangled in two murders corruption blackmail and the up- Denzel Washington Jennifer Beals in "Devil in a Blue Dress of it Washingtons easygoing smile guarantees it Washingtons supporting cast is uneven Sizemore is an effective gangster but thats about all Eeals mysterious beauty stops being alluring when she opens her mouth But stealing the show is Don Cheadle (from TVs Picket Fences) as Rawlins old pal Mouse a hoodlum whose glib talk hides a murderous intent Devil in a Blue Dress (rated for violence sexuality and language) doesnt just look like it was set in the 40s In its texture and its leading mans star power it even feels like it was made in the 40s Heres hoping Rawlins other cases make it to the big screen as smoothly smM Weber Patrick EXCLUSIVE ENGAGEMENT! fCifMelfi 06 Andy Garcia as Ruben in "Steal Big Steal Little" The strange thing about Steal Big Steal Little is that (except for the hokey Frank Capra ending) you never quite know where the movie is going In fact you begin to suspect that the writers (six are credited including director Andrew Davis) are making it up as they go along mmsrm THE MEISJ LEGEMD OF SHROLfid Jet Li is the most graceful and acrobatic ot all the Hong Kong kung fu super-stars Here he puts in an incredible performance as a Shaolm militia leader (PG-13?) 1015 Midnight DutrOr yyiMBirlLitfNTLr 'WiyfeN ill lift i ii lA TOW6nyAt "A DYNAMITE CAST! A Biirafeliy Fifissy Tfirlfc" -rstfftevnsausssrsfs Steal Big Steal Little A warm winning slightly weird comedy By Sean Means THE SALT LAKE TRIBUNE Steal Big Steal Little is as whimsical as its title a big teddy bear of a movie propelled by an off-the-wall plot and an exuberant performance by Andy Garcia Garcia plays identical twins Ruben Martinez and Robert Martin whose stepparents divorced when they were boys Robert went with their money-grubbing stepfather and became a ruthless tycoon Ruben lived with their stepmother Mona (Holland Taylor) a retired ballet dancer with a zest for living and became a warmhearted man of the people When Mona learns Robert has been embezzling from the family ranch she fires him and changes her will to give control to Ruben Mona soon dies and Ruben aims to use the family fortune to turn the ranch into a co-op Robert uses every dirty trick he can muster to regain control of the ranch Its a tough fight Robert has help from a devious developer (Kevin McCarthy) a corrupt judge (David Ogden Stiers) and most of the sheriffs department Rubens allies include- Lou (Alan Arkin) a Chicago used-car dealer evading the mob Eddie (Joe Pan-toliano) a lawyer who is more corruptible than Ruben realizes and Rubens estranged wife Laura (Rachel Ticotm) who thinks Ruben had an affair with Roberts now-ex-wife (Ally Walker) i varl siwimn fewer IWlillDw- Anomom (KSg! 19S ORION PICTURES CORP AH RIGHTS RESERVFD (HI 330 1 2:10 4:30 7:35 9:55 (DOLBY) EPaRlBBIt KBIT JUMPED IF I SEITil SUNK SSDm iMADWIYtJEMfir coming mayoral election Director Carl Franklin as he did in the thriller One False Move shows a sure hand at developing full-blooded characters that transcend movie cliches Ke also re-creates the postwar Los Angeles atmosphere meticulously with detailed street scenes period costumes and a jazzy score by Elmer Bernstein (augmented with cuts by T-Bone Walker Duke Ellington and others) But it is Washington who carries the film even when the tension sags a bit Washingtons Rawlins is a good man but no saint a man determined not to let the demons from his past overwhelm his present The only thing working against Washington is his own star pow'er when Rawlins is put in danger we know he will get out I tans I I I If I FILM PolyGram GRAMERCY 12:10 2:30 500 7:30 950 w- if JW- VS mggsgsSnr ftiaVskii 'Hntm 97974!
