TRIBUNE It looks like modem-rock radio station KXRK soon will be marching to the beat of a new boss Station owners announced this week that pending approval from the Federal Communications Commission KXRK (FM 963) will be sold to the Simmons Radio Group The sajp to Simmons was rumored a few months ago at which time KXRK general manager Jim Facer dismissed the notion by saying the station was continually besieged by potential buyers When that attempt fell through programmers at Simmons tilted the format of its own KQMB (FM 1027) toward modem rock in an attempt to pull away listeners The tactic didnt work KQMB dropped to 21 from 23 in the recent Arbitron report while KXRK increased its audience size from 26 to 31 among listeners age 25-54 (One share point equals approximately 5900 listeners in the Salt Lake Ogden and Provo marketing area) KXRKs jump in listenership made it even more attractive to buyers and on Tuesday station owners announced the sale KXRK has been a brand leader in Salt Lake City for six years now Facer said Simmons made the offer based on the performance of KXRK and its ability to add to its group of radio stations Facer who co-owned the station with concert promoter JC McNeil would not comment on the dollar amount of the deal All KXRK on-air technical and sales employees are expected to report to Simmons management once the FCC approval goes through 1 As for the timing of the sale Facer would only say Life is complicated It looked like the best thing for everyone involved Independently owned radio stations in this market are getting to be like the unicorn they are no more Facer said he will stay with the station until the FCC approves the deal Beyond that his plans are undecided While the sellout is sure to disappoint some of KXRKs more discerning anti-establishment fans the station owners chose the lesser of the corporate evils when deciding to sell Simmons is generally viewed as the owner of the conservative adult-contemporary station KSFI but it is a Salt Lake City-based company whose strong point has been to find the pulse of the Utah audience KSFI has been the No 1 station in the Wasatch Front market for nearly five years The folks at Simmons should recognize KXRK and its younger demographic and not tinker with the format too much The sale brings the number of Simmons-controlled stations in the market to eight The others are KDYLKOVO KQMB KRSP KMGR and KTCE Employees at KXRK and the Simmons headquarters were notified Tuesday of the sale in separate meetings where officials told them operations would remain the same KXRK has an image in this market and Simmons realizes that Facer said For those reasons I do not forsee any changes in programming or personnel Its moniker X-96 made it the flagship station for Generation and 90s grunge rock Several of KXRKs core employees introduced Utah audiences to modem rock in 1983 when they began broadcasting out of a basement in Provo Listeners followed them from KCGL in Bountiful to KRPN in Ogden Facer and his crew made headlines in 1991 when they walked off their jobs at the now-defunct KQJN in a dispute with station owners whom they felt wanted to commercialize the modem-rock movement Whether KXRK can maintain its edge remains to be seen You cant be the No 1 station and play the kind of music they are known for playing said Bob Bedore a former modem-rock deejay in Salt Lake City Part of the appeal is that living-by-your-own-rules attitude As long as the listeners dont detect a change it will OK Ratings Race: The latest Abritron ratings have arrived KSFI retains its first place but is in single digits for the first time in recent years The report covers radio hstership in the Salt Lake-Ogden-Provo marketing area from October to December Advertisers often base their annual rates on the fall rating numbers Here are the top finishers in the category of the average number of listeners age 25 to 54 who tune in Mondays through Sundays 6 am AMC DSC ESPN FAM RACES ON BRIDGE 1 I i By Bobby Wolff 1 "Admire a little ship but put your cargo in a big one Hesiod South had 8 fair working knowledge of bridge odds and he knew the per- centage play in todays club suit What he overlooked was that a near-cinch play is always better than one favored by marginal odds South ruffed the third spade and drew trumps showing unhappiness when trumps were 4-2 With no trumps left in any hand success now rested with picking up the entire club suit He led a club to dummys ace and a club back wondering whether to fi-r nesse or play for the drop With little to I 'guide him about the opponents distri- bution South went with the odds and played for the drop West discarded a diamond and the game fell one short the defenders getting a club and a third 1 spade South was quick to explain that when East followed to the second club South knew nine of Easts cards and only eight of Wests therefore the odds were slightly in favor of Wests "holding the last club South had put his cargo in a very kmall boat A much better road to suc-cess is to start the club suit at trick four (If South goes wrong in clubs a fourth spade lead can be ruffed in dummy) At trick four South should lead a club to dummys ace and a club back When East follows suit the pure odds are slightly in favor of a drop but the prac- tical finesse is a much better choice If 1 West wins the club queen no return dan damage South And if West ruffs 1 South's jack (todays layout) South tins Wests exit and unless a defender 1 has all five remaining trumps can Claim the remaining
