Burl Lancaster Is Taking Up Tumbling As Aid To Career HOLLYWOOD (W Hurt Lancaster is a meticulous man when it comes to advancing his career. That explains why he has given up the horizontal bars and taken up tumbling. The pitch is that Lancaster hopes to do his first musical picture next year and expects to do his share of the dancing. It is characteristic of the way he works to advance his career that he already is laying the ground work for a dancing career.

He thinks tumbling will help, Shotz O'Brien, 61-year-old former vaudeville actor and friends of Burt, is him in tumbling. Shotz says he has not had to give Burt a shove to push him all the way over on one of his back flips for several weeks now. Tumbling Helps Dancer Burt has been a devotee of the double horizontal bars since his circus and vaudeville days. Even after he turned to a screen career he kept working on the bars to keep his muscles and his waistline in trim. He says exercises on the bars have had a lot to do with his rapid rise as a star.

They were as much a part as the dialogue rehearsals in his preparations for such pictures as Warner Brothers' "Sulu Sea," which shows him as a rugged fighting Marine, sometimes stripped to the waist, or for his buccaneer role in the recent "The Crimson Pirate." But Lancaster figures they wouldn't be much good for a dancer. He believes tumbling will develop grace, poise and leg muscles better than do the bars, which mainly require hefty biceps and triceps. Takes Hitchhikers father to son and can be operated by the women of the family if necessary. It's all written down in the charter for the Frisco Railway feeder line granted John T. Cochran of Mobile, in 1924. That document specifies that trains operating on the line always shall be run by Carlisle and his heirs and they must never fail to pick up anyone who wants to ride. The reason for the hitchhiking clause is that residents of the area donated land for the right- of-way.

In return Cochran guaranteed the farmers and their families free transit anytime, anywhere. Carlisle used to take out most of the twice-daily runs, but he's getting feeble now and has turned over most of the work to his two sons, Frank and George, who alternate.
