Crowder Gains Confidence in New Quarterback By DON FORSYTHE One of a Series Boulder, Colo. Nebraska came within an eyelash last year of being the first team to see quarterback Ken Johnson directing the Colorado attack. Coach Eddie Crowder, whose team had just lost consecutive games to Oklahoma and Missouri and stood just 1-3 in Big Eight play, was not overjoyed with the performance of veteran quarterbacks Jim Bratten and Paul Arendt as the Nebraska game approached. read in the paper where coach Crowder was thinking about using me against recalls Johnson, who as a redshirt had not seen action in the first six Colorado games, was the first heard of it, so 1 went in to see In the discussion that ed Crowder and Johnson agreed that it would be best if he continued as a redshirt. Now the 6-2, 205-pound Scottsdale, product is No.

Our receivers include Cliff Branch, who can run :09.2, and Larry Brunson, who can run :09.5. It helps me a lot to know these people are Crowder is starting to gain confidence in his young quarterback, who was head and shoulders above his opposition for the job in a lengthy scrimmage last weekend.

had some concern about our quarterback spot, but feeling better about it said Eddie after watching Johnson hit 15 of 26 passes for 369 yards and four touchdowns in the scrimmage. has four basic attributes which will make him a fine says Crowder. intelligent, an excellent competitor, has a fine arm and can handle the rudiments of our running If Johnson produces during the season as he did in the game-type scrimmage the Buffs have to be counted as the serious contenders Crowder thinks they will be. a physically sound, and to some extent physically gifted, he declares. Last vear Kenworth (6-4, 225) and Tarver (6-2, 208) ranked fifth and eighth, respectively, in the Big Eight rushing standings as they Eddie Crowder Has New Quarterback shared the tailback job.

They averaged only seven yards less per game than superb pair of Joe Orduna and Jeff Kinney. The arrival of Charles Davis (6-6. 191), who could be the best sophomore running back to hit the Big Eight this season, adds a new dimension. As of last Saturday Davis was the No. 1 tailback and his abilities have prompted Crowder to shift Tarver to fullback.

The running game will be the big things with the Buffs, but opponents afford to stack their defenses too close to the line of scrimmage. Branch is catching the ball better than ever and figures to be as good a receiver this year as he was a punt and kickoff returner a year ago. The major area of concern on offense is the line, where only guard Bill Kralicek returns among the five interior people. Junior college all-American Jake Zumbach (6-3, 235) will take up some of the slack at tackle but the Buffs will have to rely on relatively inexperienced sophomores and juniors to fill the other holes. have the capacity to be good, but it will take says Crowder of the line.

The biggest improvement is likely to be seen on defense, where former Virginia Tech head coach Jerry Claiborne is now calling the shots. An acknowledged master of building good defenses, Claiborne has revamped the Colorado defense. All-American Herb Orvis, back for his final season, will line up at tackle thds year instead of end. Newcomer Bud Magrum, who like Orvis came to the Buffs following a stint in the armed forces, could be a big help. Crowder says the 6-3, 217- pound sophomore is in the same class as Orvis.

The linebacking corps is new, but promising. Leftside linebacker Billie Drake played defensive end last year. Sophomore Charles Battle (6-4, 226)and junior college transfer Jeff Juneac are battling for the other job. Crowder has several experienced hands returning in the secondary, but is concerned with depth. have five veterans for three he says.

Tagge, Anderson NU Co-Captains Two teammates at Green Bay, who are now teammates on the University of Nebraska football team, were elected co-captains Tuesday for the 1971 Nebraska Corn- huskers. The two are Jerry Tagge, who scored the winning touchdown in the 1971 Orange Bowl, chosen to head the offense; and Jim Anderson, like Tagge a senior who has started 23 consecutive games at corner back, picked to captain the defense.

Despite sharing quarterbacking duties with Van Brownson the last two seasons, Tagge has still managed to set career passing and total offense records at Nebraska. 3,233 yards in 547 offensive plays pace that department for the Cornhuskers. He also holds the total offense mark for a single season by racking up 1,689 yards in the 1970 championship campaign. His total of 2,891 yards via the air route in his first two seasons also stands as a Husker mark. A social science major in the College, Tagge needs only 287 more yards to bring his total offense mark to an even two miles.

Anderson landed the starting cornerback spot as a sophomore in 1969 and was the only returning starter in an inexperienced secondary last year. Anderson, majoring in mathematics in the Teachers College, finished in a deadlock for the third-most interceptions on last squad with four.
