Analyses of the popularity of this singer, composer, guitarist and all around entertainer have been wide and varied. There are better singers, better show hosts and certainly more handsome men. But his acceptance grows with each month.

The depression era had its Jimmie man who sang about jails, trains and lonesome times. As one of the first of the popular country recording artists, he offered no hope in his songs, but he gave a sort of release to man's woes. Dressed in his frock coat, ruffled or wing-collared shirfs, Cash's fascination for trains fends nostalgia to his fellow man. Many of today's urbanites were once country or people and they like being reminded of yesterdays. Others dream of a time when they can get away teeming cities with the traffic, smog, crime and other uncertainties.

Cash gives freely of his time for all hinds of causes. He has forfeited many thousands of dollars in appearance fees to entertain men in prisons. And he champions the cause for prison reform and rehabilitation of prisoners. He says this gives more personal satisfaction than money. A friend of mine who is with a movie company was in Nashville last summer on assignment.

He reports that Johnny Cash is a respected citizen of the state. The Cash home is located on a large lake shore Henderson which is about 12 miles from Nashville. is nestled against a cliff, which forms one wall of the living room. He was building a family chapel on the grounds last summer, to be made entirely of old lumber (walnut) which he obtained from demolished Southern down in the name of progress. Only a short distance away is The Hermitage, Andrew Jackson's old home.

Jackson was S. President when the Cherokees were driven out of Georgia. For an underprivileged boy who can be called a member of a minority race, Cash has done pretty well for himself. He has sold more than 15 million records and has even been able to refuse a request from President to sing "Welfare Cadilac," in last month's appearance at the White House. No doubt the future will hold even greater things.
