Cougars Should Be Competitive A 2 Randy Bashor and sophomore where they are blessed with the return of both buards and tackles from last year. Returning at guard are Keith Neal and Chris Westfall, both 5-10, 165 pounds. Coming back to tackle spots are Jim Kohman, 6-5, 200, and Mark Sinnott, 6-1, 200. Other top offensive line prospects are senior at this point," says May. SLV also finds an experience problem in its defensive secondary.

"We have speed and height there for a change, but everybody's relatively new in their spots," adds May. The -Cougars' real strong spot appears to be the offensive line, Jim Harriman, both guards, and center-tackle Joe Krasky. May enters the new county league with respect for every team in the circuit. He feels that Soquel, Watsonville and Harbor will be top contenders for the first division title. rx rn I TO TO Cl By MARK BERGSTROM Sentinel Sports Writer If the San Lorenzo Valley High Cougars can stay healthy through a rough practice and inter-division schedule, they should be competitive in this year's new Monterey Bay League divisional setup.

The Cougars are thin in numbers and in depth at certain spots, but that's not a new problem for them. This year's SLV varsity consists of 28 players. Coach Frank "Buck" May had hopes of picking up a few more players during the first week of school to push the squad over the 30-member mark. SLV opens season play Saturday against Overfelt of San Jose, which this year reportedly sports a powerful and talented offensive unit. Then, the Cougars face Salinas and North Salinas as their two inter-division foes.

May anticipates tough battles as well ki those games, especially since both are regarded as two of the most "physical" teams in the Monterey Bay League. The Cougars then get into intra-county play as provided by the split of the MBL this year. If they can stay healthy they should be competitive with the county schools. In addition to the lack of depth, primarily critical on the defensive line, San Lorenzo Valley will have to overcome inexperience problems in a number of departments. Foremost probably will be inexperience in the offensive backfield, where the Cougars sport no returning regulars from last year.

The only player with any experience there is halfback John Costella, but he only saw action in one game as a halfback before being struck by a season-long illness. Leading the offense will be rookie quarterback Keith Reason, a 6-0, 175-pound sophomore, up from last year's frosh squad. May says Reason is a good ball handler and a strong runner and so far is adapting well to the wishbone offense, which in itself is a tough offense to adjust to, especially by inexperienced backs. Reason, however, is not a developed passer, so SLV will most likely be forced to a ground attack. Last season The Valley gained nearly equal yardage via Chris Phillips' passing and hard-nosed running by halfback Hal Cunningham.

Cunningham gained 815 yards rushing and scored 11 of SLV's 20 touchdowns last year. The Cougars may be hard pressed to fill Cunningham's shoes in the backfield this year. May is banking hopes on Costella, a 5-6, 155-pound senior, halfback Ron Gehrmann, a 6-foot, 170-pound senior, and Mike Leuck, a 5-10, 190-pound senior fullback. He also doubles as a linebacker, where he, Gehrmann and Gene Flores should develop a sound defensive punch for the Valley this year. All three are returning lettermen.
