S7S2) OOOOOOOOO TpF GO FOR EXTRA YARDAGE UNA WE RENT EVERYTHING When the Cabrillo College Seahawks take to their home turf Saturday night against Reedley College in their 1972 football opener, Hal Mitchell will be beginning his fifth season as the Hawks' head coach. The entire Cabrillo coaching staff remains as it has for the last two seasons, In that Joe Marvin, Don Montgomery and Gene Johnson will assist Mitchell. Mitchell and Marvin's relationship dates back well before two seasons ago when Marvin joined the Cabrillo staff. The two veteran coaches played football together at UCLA in 1951, when Mitchell was a senior and Marvin a junior.

Following his noteworthy collegiate career at UCLA, Mitchell went on to play for the New York Giants of the National Football League. After a year as a Giant tackle, Mitchell entered the service, playing football for the Ft. Lee Travlers in the Blast Coach Service League. Then after his military obligation, Mitchell returned to the Giants, where he again played tackle until turning from player to coach. His first coaching assignment was at Mira Costa Hign School in Manhattan Beach, California.

After two successful seasons at Mira Coasta, Mitchell assumed the head coaching position at W.S. Hart High School in Newhall, California. following a season at Hart, Mitchell accepted the freshman football coaching position at Brigham Young University in Utah, where, in 1961, he was elevated to the head varsity position. Mitchell held the BYU post until 1964, when he returned to California, joining then-head coach Larry Siemering and assistant Jack Morris at Cabrillo. Morris soon succeeded Siemering, and five years ago, Mitchell took over for Morris, who resigned the head coaching position to devote more time to his Cabrillo athletic directorship duties.

Marvin begins his third season on the Seahawk staff, coming to Cabrillo from the University of California where he was an assistant to Ray Willsey. Before his collegiate coaching days, Marvin was one of the most successful high school coaches in the nation, his teams compiling phenominal records. He began prep coaching in 1958 when he took over the head position at Sequoia High School. During his first four seasons at Sequoia, Marvin-coached teams were undefeated, winning 33 consecutive games in that period. Following his prep coaching career, Marvin moved on to the University of and then on to Cal.

Montgomery and Johnson are starting their fourth seasons at Cabrillo. Montgomery is a graduate of Long Beach State College and is a former Canadian Football League player. Before coming to Cabrillo, Montgomery was a coach at Polytechnic High School in Long Beach. Johnson has been on the Santa Cruz County football scene for many years, assisting the late Emmett Geiser at Watsonville High School in 1955. In 1956, he became head football coach and directed the Wildcats to numerous successful seasons before moving on to Cabrillo.

Ray Solari Is Menlo's New Coach Ray Solari, Menlo College's new head football coach, is one of the most successful high school coaches in the state, but that's all behind Solari who this season moves into the junior college coaching ranks. Solari goes to Menlo College with an outstanding 120-43-5 record, a mark achieved at South Pasadena High School, where Solan's teams won five Rio Hondo League titles and four CIF Triple A championships. Solari's teams compiled those records from 1956 to last season, Solari's last at South Pasadena. Solari replaces Don Baike as head coach, but Baike remains on the Menlo staff as an assistant, his primary duties dealing with offensive and defensive backs. Solari will handle the lines, and he'll be aided on that count by Jim Klaczak, a former University of San Francisco player who specializes in defensive line coaching.

As a collegiate player, Solari was a member of three Rose Bowl teams, from 1948 through 1950, when California coach Pappy Waldorf directed the Bears. After a year of student coaching, Solari entered the Army for two years. Following his military service, he assumed his first teaching position at South Pasadena High. Then came his head coaching appointment in 1956. During his senior season at Cal, Solari was a starting linebacker on the Bears' Rose Bowl team that year, and a defensive back was none other than Luke Phillips, or as Solari says, "Lukie -Then during Solari's student coaching season, he coached former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Matt Hazeltine.

Also at Cal at that time was another familiar name, Dick Paynter. Phillips and Paynter, of course, are the respective coaches at Monterey Peninsula and Ohlone colleges. So when Menlo meets MPC and Ohlone this football season, Ray Solari will be coaching head-to-head against a former teammate, Phillips, and a former player he coached, Paynter, during his first of many successful coaching years on the gridiron. COWBOYS LEADING Salinas High School was the old Coast Counties Athletic League total offense leader in 1959, averaging 364 yards a game. Santa Cruz High was the runnerup, averaging an even 300 yards a game.
