WASHINGTON (AP) -Americans are troubled about unemployment, rising costs and government red tape but remain generally optimistic in their outlook, says a report by Vice President Nelson A. Rockefeller.

Rockefeller's report, issued Wednesday, sums up the observations of about 6,000 persons who attended public forums held by the Ford administration in six cities since mid-October. Rockefeller said the three volumes of material gathered at the forums "represent a profoundly moving portrait of America today an America whose people are troubled yet hopeful, hard-pressed yet vigor- I SEAfOOO STEAKy 1 ous, and above all, faithful to the democratic process." He said that although those participating in the forums -expressed concern on many issues, he perceived "a note of optimism that runs through this land today." Police Seek Mother Of Baby LOS ANGELES (AP)-Au-thorities were searching today for a mother who left her months-old infant with a resident of a downtown hotel and then disappeared. Officers said the resident, who was not indentified, called them Wednesday when the woman, described in her mid20s, failed to return. (AP) -The saga of the Lakewood High School Band has ended. Happily, no less: During the past year, the 205member band had raised $50,000 to finance a trip to Pasadena to participate in the Tournament of Roses Parade on New Year's Day. The band had booked a charter flight on United Airlines, but the trip appeared to be off after the airline was struck by its machinists. Alternate transportation seemingly was un-avilable because of the holiday travel crunch. But school officials said Wednesday they had finally arranged for another charter, courtesty of Trans-International Airways, to fly the band to California on Christmas night.

"How can you describe a scream of joy?" said Chip Pulcrano, the band's publicity adviser. "The impossible happened, and we're grateful to so many people who pitched in and helped to make the dream come true." Dolls have been children's playthings since the beginning of civilization. They probably originated as ceremonial idols representing human figures. The word "doll" may derive from the Greek word "eidolon," or from the name "Dorothea." North American Indian children had dolls long before Europeans arrived on the continent. The Indians' dolls were made from such natural materials as animal skins, cornhusks and apples.

Collectors believe that the oldest doll in America today was brought from England by William Penn in 1699. DO YOU KNOW What 19th Century British queen was a noted doll collector? Hamlet, sitting South, knew he should have passed the fair Ophelia's diamond opening, but people tend to bid in the last rubber. Similarly, Ophelia didn't have to jump all the way to three notrump. but she had great faith in Hamlet.

West opened the king of spades. Hamlet ducked, but had to win the spade continuation. Then he soliloquized, "To gamble, or not to gamble. Ah, there's the rub. For whether 'tis better to suffer a small penalty or to test the slings and arrows of outrageous fortune and risk a seven trick set.

I'll try the latter." Then he led dummy's king of hearts, overtook with his ace and led his 10 of diamonds. The finesse worked and all was well at Castle Elsinore. The finesse was not as much of a gamble as it might have been. West's bid had marked him with a lot of high cards and he was more likely than not to hold the king of diamonds. INT.

Neb. (AP)-A 73-year-old ex-bum has sent a $5 check to the McCook Police Department along with season's greetings and thanks for a kindness bestowed 40 years ago. Police Chief Richard Brunswick said the letter and check came from Glenn Stewart of Wolcott, Ind. Stewart wrote that in the 1930s he and a friend rode a freight train into McCook on New Year's Eve and couldn't find another one out. So they checked in at the police station.

"You let us stay in your nice warm jail overnight, Stewart wrote. "And before leaving the next day, the officer on duty gave each man a check good for 15 cents which "bought us coffee and donuts at a small restaraunt. "I am 73 years old now and I don't think I will get out your way anymore.
