The order was favored by 206 producers or 48 per cent of the 433 producers voting in a mail referendum held Feb. 4 through March 13, said USDA's Consumer and Marketing Service. The voting represented 47 per cent of the production volume, the service said. 'The proposed program, initiated by the Western States Lettuce Producers Committee, would have set the quantity of western lettuce to be marketed during specific periods to balance supply with expected demand, for improved returns to producers. The Agricultural Marketing Agreement Act requires approval by two-thirds of the number of producers, or the volume of production voted, before a program becomes final.
