While the proprietor was waiting on another customer Ansel inspected a jar that had something in it that resembled wax in appearance. He took one long sniff of investigation and then as soon as he could catch his breath let out of him a war-whoop louder than any he ever heard on the banks of Roche-a-Cris creek. The glass jar contained carbonate of ammonia. Gov. Upham has applied to the war deparment for a detail of the United States troops to attend the encampment of the National guard of the state at the military reservation this summer.

It is understood that the department will do the utmost possible to comply with this request, as if it had not been for the Chicago riots last summer, troops would have been sent to Camp Douglas. G. W. Rrady and Miss M. Brady for entertaining so large a party and for their efforts in making the evening an enjoyable one to all, for each and every one acknowled ged a good time. Lent Observation.

Editor Democrat: Some say, perhaps You speak of the design of Lent; what is it? Well, not to go through a mere form of being more religious; not make up for past neglect of duty; not to accumulate a surplus of piety and devotion suflicient to average up the rest of the years worldliness; certainly not as some giddy worldlings seem to suppose, to afford a body worn out with an exhausting round of amusements a chance to recuperate. No. The object of the Lenten Fast, is, by special instruction, careful self-discipline and extraordinary acts of devotion, as the prayer book styles them, to help the Christian shake off his worldliness and indevotion, and get himselt strengthened and resolutely girded up for a better life after Lent, a better one than he has ever lived before. Lent is not a sort of religious elevator used to lift the Christian up to a better level of holy living, only to be let down after Easter to the old life and the old ways. This is to make a religious shame, and a cultivator of hypocrisy No.

It is rather a rugged ascent which is designed to develope our better powers and bring out real strength of purpose and self-control, so that wh-rn we have reached its top, we can step out, as it were, on a noble plateau in the religious life, where the air is purer, the prospects more heavenly, and the Christian course more consistent and successful. It is designed to make one a better Christian, and to make it easier for him to be one and to keep on living as a Christian man ought to do for his souls health, for the good of mankind, and for the glory of Gyd. This is the object of Lent. Rector. An Hour Sale! THE Hive Bee That will last Four Days, beginning Monday noon (Feb.
