He did both yesterday.

But as usual, Brush banged out a 6-2, 6-1 victory in front of an appreciative crowd and under a bright jun, beating his University "of Redlands teammate for the fourth time of the season and capturing his second straight NAIA District 3 singles championship. "I'm about ready to retire," said Verdieck, who was crashing into fences and falling to his knees against Brush's tricky shots. As Verdieck was ready to quit, however, everyone else from the other 15 teams in the District 3 Tournament already had been eliminated. Redlands was the sole survivor virtually playing against itself in yesterday's singlps and doubles Brush, "It gave the ball a high backbounce and gave me a chance to run up close to the net where I could see." It wasn't a close match, though, as Brush took command early, although the crowd was kept busy applauding good shots by both players, who sought relief from the sun by sipping water from empty ball cans. With Stanton, however, the younger Verdieck was able to unleash his usual power against Nakajima and Finkelstein, who had climbed to the title match with two straight upsets.

In the morning Nakajima and Finkelstein gainecj a semifinals doubles victory over Brush and Rick Tripp by 6-1 and 6-2, following a Friday upset over Claremont's No. 1-ranked team of Cooley and Cox that clinched the Redlands title. The finals loss thwarted Finkelstein's bid to be part of the champion doubles team for the second straight season. No one needed a scorecard. Everyone had the Redlands emblem on his shirt in the doubles, where Verdieck joined Seabury Stanton to snap the string of upsets by Yuki Nakajima and Mitch Finkelstein, 6-1 and 6-2.

Only two outsiders started in the last morning of the three-day tourney and they were promptly ousted in the singles. Brush beat Claremont's Eric Cooley for the third straight time, 6-2 6-3, while Verdieck took a 6-1, 6-2 win that eliminated the Sagehen's Ted Cox. Coach Jim Verdieck's Bulldogs, who never have lost a District Tournament, scored all the last day's points to finish with 42. Second-place Claremont had 29. If the finish was anti-climatic, Coach Verdieck still was pleased.

"No matter what, we had three good days of hard tennis and that's what we need for Kansas City," said Verdieck, who will take the team there June 5-9 in search of a seventh straight NAIA National. Tournament title. Some of the best play of the third round was provided by the 6-foot-5 Brush and wasted on a day when Randy Verdieck was not at his peek. 'I think I just played terrible," said Verdieck, who will try out with the Los Angeles Rams as a safety after gra-duation. "I had no backhand." Using his patented accuracy and consistency, Brush broke down Verdieck with a economy of movement and an overwhelming variety of shots.

"Randy's frustrations came mostly from playing on the sunny side," Brush said. "He lost the serve every time over there. Only by using a twisting serve toss, Brush was able to take advantage of the same brightness that blinded Verdieck to score points. "I just tossed the ball far to my side so I wasn't looking into a blob of sun," said wpvls cf 4 0 10 Montanez cf 4 1 2 0 rRaniiun rt 3 0 0 0 Lulinskl II 4 0 2 1 Belanqer, Rettenmund. DP Baltimore 1.

Lieberman had said that the women's and men's scores were terrible and were way down due to the wind. The wind in fact was a deterrent, getting up around 25 knots. However, one person who didn't pay any attention to the wind was Riverside City College's Debbie Green. She became the U.S. Women's Archery Champion as she maintained her lead from Friday's Columbia and NAA "900" rounds.

Debbie was seeded high, but most spectators were surprised at her performance. She was too. The women's team championship went to Arizona State, as it did last year. "My stomach hurts," said Mel. "I'm getting old.

I'm not sure I can take these kind of games." Of course, the stomach pains could have come from the now vanished pizza and beer. The 30-year-old hurler didn't seem to be bothered too much by the Angels, thanks to staunch Yankee backing. Against the Angels, any semblance of scoring support will suffice for Stottlemyre. The Yankees saw to it that Mel had breathing room right from the opening pitch. Horace Clarke opened the game with a double and Rusty Torres, the young rightfielder, sent him home with a screaming double off the wall in left.

On the late throw to the plate which was intended to halt Clarke, Rusty rolled to third. Moments later he scored on a sacrifice fly by Yankee catcher Thurm Munson. The Angels feigned some type of retaliation in the sixth when singles by Bob Oliver and Ken McMullen, plus a walk to Leo Cardenas loaded the bases. (Continiiod From 1) Thompson, Porter, Scolt. Washington fans are not dismayed by such certainties. They do not go to the ball park to see their side win; they go to admire the professionalism of the opposition. They go because it is a beautiful evening, and because the ball park is a sweet place to glance through the newspapers and drink a beer on an evening like this. They go to admire the Senators' ingenuity at devising fresh ways to lose games. In that spirit we went and were not disappointed.

Bancroft, the Mission Conference singles champion, and teammate Larry Taylor will be competing this Friday in the state finals at San Diego City College. It is the first, time anyone from Valley has ever made it to the finals. And Taylor and Bancroft are the lone Mission Conference representatives. Yesterday's eventual single champion, Rick Hernandez defeated Bancroft in a semifinals match, G-4, 7-5. Hernandez is from San Diego CC and will be taking the home court this weekend as the favorite for the state title.

Hernandez also won the Ojai tennis tournament earlier this year. Bancroft ended third in the Southern California standings and Taylor was sixth. Fuller-ton won the team title, followed bv Pasadena, San Diego and Valley. Taylor was defeated in the quarterfinals Friday. The lop right finalist were given berth in the finals.
