D-4 SAN BERNARDINO SUN.Tili&RAM Pr, Timely Teiegramm Fires Up Chennmpioini Needles By BRUCE GRANT Sun-Telegram Sports Writer RIDGECREST A telegram spurred the Needles Mustangs to the CIF Small Schools championship here Friday night. Just prior to Needles' 45-20 conquest of Trona, Coach Jerry Porter read this message to the players: "This is the only game that really counts. This evening we will either bp thp CIF champs or jus! another NppHIps fnnlhall team, that will soon he forgotten. "I'll he following every play on the radio, and remember that '22' will be with you all the way. "All our sacrifices will be worthless if victory goes to Trona tonight.

"Play as the team you are, and you will win. God bless all of you." The telegram was received Friday afternoon from Rick Lyon, the fine blocker and defensive star who suffered a broken leg in the semifinal game against Webb at Upland. His condition was such that it, was not advisable for him to make the 2.12-mile trip here. The team arrived here Thursday afternoon and had a brief workout that evening on the Burroughs High field, site of the title game. Asked if he told the players anything else, Porter declared: "I didn't have to.

This bunch knew what they had to do." Needles had the poise of a championship team Friday night. The Mustangs charged onto the field inspired by Lyon's telegram and 48 playing minutes later owned the. Small Schools trophy for the second time in four years. For Torter, it was a specta cular climax to his first season as a head coach. He really didn't expect a championship his first time out at least, not after the Mustangs suffered their 20-0 loss to Boulder City.

"I hung up a sign over the dressing room door after that game," Porter recalled, 'it read: 'Through These Doors Walk the Future CIF I really thought I'd get laughed out of Needles, because I was thinking of next year." The Mustangs surprised their young coach and won eight straight games after the Boul der City shutout. Of Friday night's championship game, Porter first discussed Trona. "You can't fumble like they did," he pointed out. The Tornadoes lost the ball three times on fumbles. "Of course," he added hastily, "we were hitting hard.

"They had a game ball team. They never quit." Of his own squad, Porter hailed quarterback Ron Green. The cool junior hit 9 of 17 passes for 142 yards and two touchdowns against Trona. He amassed over 1,000 aerial yards for the season. "This Green's got to be the best quarterback around," Porter declared.

Fullback Tom Claypool was another workhorse Friday night. "At 203, he's hard to stop," Porter pointed out. "Where we really hurt them was in the second half on the fake to Claypool and the crossbuck give to Edmonds. "Edmonds had 188 yards rushing tonight to put him over the 1,000 mark for the season. Claypool had 111," he added.

Teamwise, Needles "ran (he ball 74 times to their 3fi," Por ter asserted. That was another factor in gaining the huge trophy. "I just know it's the state championship," the elated Porter proclaimed. "They don't have this kind of small school teams in Northern California." Porter, prior to coming to Needles, was an assistant coach at a high school in Hayward. Sixteen of Needles' 32 squad members are seniors.

Half nf this group started Friday night's game. Portrr has a fair-sized rebuilding job ahead if his dressing room sign is really for next year. Baltimore is first in the Western Division with a 9-2-1 record and could clinch a second straight title game match with the defending champion Cleveland Browns with a victory over the Packers, who are 9-3. If Green Bay wins at Baltimore, and if the resurgent Bears beat the San Francisco 4flers at Chicago, that would make a three-way fight of it among Ihe Packers, Colls and Rears going into the final weekend.

Both the Colls and Packers finish on the West Coast, Ihe Colls against the Los Angeles Rams next Saturday and the Packers against the 4flers next Sunday.
