HARWOOD UPI Science Writer CAPE CANAVERAL Fla (UPI) The shuttle crew rocketed into orbit Tuesday ringing in the new decade with a delayed down-to-the-wire flight to rescue an 11 -ton satellite before it plunges to a fiery death in atmosphere With its three main engines roaring at full throttle two 14-story solid-fuel boosters ignited with a rush of fire on time at 7:35 am EST and smoothly climbed skyward on the first of 10 flights set for 1990 two one zero booster ignition and liftoff of said NASA commentator Lisa Malone a new decade of spaceflight At the controls were commander Daniel Brandcnstcin 46 a veteran of two previous flights and rookie co-pilot James Wethcrbee 37 Their crewmates are veteran Bonnie Dunbar 40 Marsha Ivins 38 and David Low 33 both making their first space flight Two minutes after liftoff redesigned boosters fell away from the climbing spaceship and at eight and a half minutes into the mission the hydrogen-fueled main engines shut down putting the spaceplane in a safe preliminary orbit Brandcnstcin and Wctherbce planned to fire the twin orbital maneuvering rockets about 40 minutes after liftoff to circularize the orbit at an altitute of about 207 miles Liftoff of the 33rd shuttle mission the most ambitious flight yet attempted in the post-Challcnger era came 22 days and four delays behind schedule because of work to refurbish launch pad 39A and low clouds that scotched a launch try Monday Low clouds showed up again Tuesday but they were not judged to be a threat and Columbia pierced through a thin cloud layer and shot toward space leaving a churning trail of dirty brown exhaust in its wake and thrilling thousands of tourists and spectators gathered along area roadways and beaches The goal of the long-awaited flight is the launch Wednesday of a Syncom Navy communications satellite and the retrieval late this week of the Long Duration Exposure Facility LDEF an 1 1-ton science satellite that is falling toward a fiery March re-entry into the atmosphere LDEF (pronounced was built to expose a variety of high-tech materials to the harsh radiation vacuum and temperature extremes of space over an extended period in research expected to help engineers design hardier longer-lived spacecraft launch was timed to kick off a complex orbital ballet of rocket firings and maneuvers designed to bring the shuttle within a throw of the 12-sidcd satellite racing along at more than 17100 mph and falling about a half mile per day When Columbia took off LDEF was sailing 2062 miles above the Atlantic Ocean southeast of Bermuda on a course carrying it toward the coast of North Africa If all goes well Columbia will pass about 3000 feet below LDEF Friday morning before looping in front of the satellite and then above it for a manually controlled descent to within 35 feet At that point Dunbar using the 50-foot-robot arm plans to pull the satellite into cargo bay for return to Earth for anal A third objective of mission is to work the shuttle and the astronauts over a 10-day period as part of a program to eventually certify orbiters for flights lasting 16 days or more The astronauts scheduled to carry out a long list of science engineering and medical experiments throughout the flight plan to glide to a night landing Jan 19 at Edwards Air Force Base Calif to close out the 10-day flight Columbia first space shuttle originally was scheduled to blast off on its ninth mission Dec 18 but the flight was repeatedly delayed to Monday because of work to finish an extensive overhaul of launch pad 39 A last used by Columbia four years ago Friday Extensively modified to improve crew safety and shuttle weather protection the sprawling launch myriad systems worked flawlessly during the countdown Monday but persistent low clouds forced NASA managers to order a 24-hour postponement NASA considers mission a high priority because LDEF is slowly dropping out of orbit victim of the gentle but insistent "drag" produced by friction with the tenuous outer reaches of atmosphere LDEF is equipped with 57 experiments including one supplied by the George Park Seed Co in which more than 12 million tomato seeds will be distributed to school students across the nation in an experiment to find out how long-term exposure to space radiation may have affected -mutation rates President denounces Noriega moved nT 0 it
