Portage student wins Gale essay contest Community Notes By Becca Bryan The following story is reprinted Last week it ran with errors now corrected Becca Bryan of Endeavor was awarded first prize in a Zona Gale essay contest sponsored by the Writers at the Portage The contest was held in conjunction with Zona Gale Days in August Becca is a ninth grade student at Julia Rusch Junior High School She was awarded $25 and a certificate Following is her winning entry 6 Facility open house in Montello Ruby Dow Director of Marquette County Home Health has announced the plans for celebrating Home Care Week which will be celebrated by home care agencies throughout Wisconsin Nov 29 through Dec 5 Marquette County Home Health will be holding an Open House ai the Marquette County Service Center at 480 Underwood Avenue today from 8 am to 4:30 pm Marquette County Home Health Service served 141 patients in 1991 and made 4332 tome visits FLW cottage is open Dec 13 LAKE DELTON The Seth Peterson Cottage a Frank Lloyd Wiight designed building will be open to the public Dpc 13 as it is every second Sunday of the month at Mirror Lake State Park Those visiting that day are invited to bring an ornament from home to decorate the outdoor tree at the cottage The cotage is open front 2 to 5 pm Bedtime story hour coming PORTAGE A holiday bedtime story hour will be held on Dec 14 at 7 pm at the Portage Public Library Children of all ages are invited to participate accompanied by a parent or caregiver Guest readers will be Judge Dan Gporge and Carlene Leeland Stories songs and fingerplays will be shared following the holiday theme To register call the library at 742-4959 or stop in and visit the Room If special accommodations are required to enable your child to attend please contact the library BECCA BRYAN Zona Gale was an extraordinary author Of many books and other writings Some works were ship Lulu Gentians and Blue and Bridal She wrote a lot about her smail-town life in Portage Zona Gale was a student at the University of Wisconsin-Madison from 1891-1895 She took courses in literature -and her poems appeared in campus publications She then graduated from UW-Madison with a Bachelor of Library Science degree in 1895 She was later awarded Master of Library Science degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1899 and got another masters from the UW in 1901 In 1929 she received an Honorary degree from the UW In 1895 Zona Gale joined the editorial staff of Evening Wisconsin She then joined the staff of the Milwaukee Journal in 1896 In 1901 she moved to New York and became a reporter for Evening World Gale became Edmund Clarence secretary and was associated with writers in the Stedman literary circle including Richard LeGallinne and Ridgely Torrence She published her first novel in 1906 Gale became engaged in civic and state affairs in 1908 and 1909 In 191 0 she won $2000 for first prize in short fiction contest for Although most of Her novels were contemporary ho- book about the drought in 1918 could have been written about Portage in the summer of 1988: day of heat withered Burage (Portage) It was the eighth day of such heat The people had counied and began to take delight in this continuance Looks like this will go down as the hot summer of eight (from the Wisconsin State Journal 1H) In 1921 Zona Gale was the first woman to win a Pulitzer prize in drama or Births Wyatt Emmet Clark A son Wyatt Emmet Clark was bom Nov 11 at St Clare Hospital Baraboo to Michael and Janis Clark of Adams Wyatt weighed 7 pounds 1 ounce Grandparents are Mr and Mrs Wyane Allen Adams and Mr and Mrs Robert Clark Westfield Lulu which was based on her novel of the same name She wrote more than 30 books and plays andmany were bestsellers Her work was popular all over the United States She frequently wrote about Portage and Wisconsin and she was very generous to Wisconsin her native state Gale viewed Portage as a perfect romantic place In 1901 Gale fell in love and had to choose between Ridgely Torrence in New York or her parents in Pqftage She decided to leave New York and she returned to Portage to be will her parents She then became a pacifist against the war in 1917 Zona mother died on May 29 1923 and her father died on Sept 18 1929 In 1928 Gale married William Lly welyn Breese when she was 53 years old aril both her parents had died Zona Gale adopted Leslyn in 193 1 Leslyn was a 5-yev-cld relative whom Gale had cared for in 1926 Then in 1937 Gale traveled to Tapan Zcii? Cele died of pneumonia on Dec 27 19311 in a Chicago hospital She was burial on the Silver Lake Cemetery in Portage on Dec 30 Zona Gale lived most of her life in Portage but she did live in Madison Milwaukee asd New York City for a little while eacli i- ortage named its performing arts center after her and two houses were donated in her name by her husband to the people of Portage She also left money for Scholarships at the UW-Madison Gale left 31 boxes of manuscript materials and dozens of scrapbooks personal photos and her Pulitzer Prize to the State Historical Society of Wisconsin Zona Gale was an excellent American author She wrote many books and became very well-known She was very fond of Portage and wrote about it a lot She will forever be well remembered in Portage Wis Alyssa Joy Blau BARABOO A daughter Alyssa Joy was bom Nov 3 to Charlie and Jennie Blau Jr at St Clare Hospital Alyssa weighed 8 pounds 2 ounces Grandparents are Mary Hiller Portage Charles and Geri Blau of Merri-mac Great-grandmother is Rose Blau of Portage am Anniversaries 4-H Horse Bowl Team is state grand champ was also high point individual in the Junior Horse Bowl contest These youth also did an outstanding job in other horse activities at the Sate 4-H Horse Expo in Madison Doug Hoar received a Grand Champion in Junior Speech and Grand Champion in PORTAGE Columbia Junior 4-H Horse Bowl Team won Grand Champion at the State 4-H Expo in Madison These five 4-H members achieved the high goal of winning the state contest over three other counties who were also winners at Area Animal Science Days By winning this contest it is as far as a Junior Horse Bowl Team can go Columbia County also had the Grand Champion Junior Horse Bowl Team last year at the state contest The team was coached by Don Hoar The five members on the team this year were Doug Hoar Bridget Bourne Michelle Hoksch Cheryl' Bourne and Teresa Pahl Doug is from Poyncttc Bridget and Cheryl are from Columbus Michelle is from Pardeeville and Teresa is from Fall River Doug also participated at the State 4-H Horse Expo Amie Bourne recieved a Reserve Champion in Senior Hippology and four Reserve Champions six Top Ten and high point English in Model Horse Kristen Mickelson received a Grand Champion on her Drawing and a Grand Champion of Clothes Horse Amie and Kristen also received a Top Ten ribbon on their Senior Team Demonstration Sherrie Pahl recieved a Grand Champion and a Reserve Champion in Clothes Horse These eight youth had fun achieving their outstanding record Congratulations to these youth few a job well done A special thanks also go to the parents few bringing the youth to the project meetings Robert and Della Thayer PARDEE VILLE Robot and Della Thayer are celebrating their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec 3 with a family dinner They were married in Sarasota Fla on Dec 3 1942 while Robert was stationed at the Bradenton Sarasota Air Base They were there for four years They have one daughter Bonita McDuff (Stephen) of Waunakee and two grandsons Robert and John Mecham of Madison They have resided at the same address in Pardeeville for 46 years ROBERT and DELLA junior Demonstrations Bridget Bourne received a Grand Champion in Junior Hip-pology Cheryl Bourne received a Grand Champion in Beginner Hippology and a Top Ten in Model Horse Teresa Pahl received a ReserveChampion and a Top Ten in Savior reduces mammogram cost Engagements The hospital will continue to participate in the American Cancer Society detection program next year focusing oh women aged 50 and older with no symptoms or history of breast cancer who have not had a mammogram Lelivelt said the new fee should go a long way to ensure that women in Columbia and surrounding counties have access to mammograms that can save Specials Department PORTAGE Overwhelming demand for services during Divine Savior Hospital's annual Breast Cancer Detection Awareness Program in October has prompted the Portage hospital to reduce fees for all mammograms year-round Divine Savior radiology department director Candy Lelivelt made the announcement tried to accommodate the detection program waiting list but I know women woe still calling for appointments after the program concluded in she said A total of 93 area women this year participated in the breast cancer detection program which included reduced-cost screening mammograms and breast examination instruction response indicates that many women are not having heeded mammograms for financial Lelivelt said She said Divine Savior administrators at the not-for-profit hospital supported the fee reduction as a way to meet the health care needs of women in the region in' keeping with the mission fee was on par with that charged by other area Lelivelt said new fee is about
