KILGORE NEWS HERALD Page 11A Sunday October 25 1992 Early voting seeing allegations of fraud Drug dog handler get more training By JAY ARRINGTON He is more than 36-years-old in dog years and he just went back to school Guy the Kilgore Police Departments police dog received new training Guy a friendly black German Shepherd was acquired by the KPD a couple of years ago and he doubles as a police dog and a drug dog according to his handler Officer Frank Bless The two have been partners for about one and one-half years The two have been visiting the local schools on drug detection outings and this week were at Kilgore High School Officer Bless walked Guy around the halls and the dog sniffed at lockers looking for drugs Last weekend Guy and Bless went to school to teach Guy how to be more aggressive in his drug searches "He is now more aggressive toward narcotics'" Bless said "And I learned how to keep him keyed up about finding drugs" "We are both going to school constantly" Bless said "Guy is a member of the National Narcotic Detection Dog Association (NDDA) He is certified for finding marijuana methamphetamines cocaine and heroine" According to Bless he has made several finds in the Kilgore area including one bust that produced 100 pounds of marijuana two years ago "It (finding drugs) is like a game to him" Bless said In a few weeks Guy and Bless will be competing in Longview in the national trials for the NDDA "He is a good dog" Bless said patting Guy affectionately on the head "But he is a better deterrent than anything else" There has been a series of allegations lodged by Republicans in the heavily Democratic South Texas county Republicans say they also are warily eyeing the number of absentee ballots requested by mail for elderly or sick voters including 400 from one precinct alone Under state law voters who are elderly infirm or planning to be out of town on Election Day may request ballots by mail fill them out and return them In Bee County 1000 such absentee ballots have been requested according to Aliseda a Democrat-tumed-Republican who is seeking re-election Fewer than 7000 people voted countywide total two years ago records show Aliseda said an investigation into possible voter fraud is warranted Charges of voter fraud occurred in the county in 1987 when a Bee County grand jury investigated No action was taken In 1990 two Bee County residents were found guilty President Bush attends service HOUSTON (AP) President Bush attended a memorial service Saturday for the wife of his onetime business partner in an appear- ance that had little to do with his campaign feu- re-election Bush stopped at the service for Betty Lyn Dirickson Liedtke the wife of Pennzoil Co chairman Hugh Liedtke between campaign trips The First Presbyterian Church service for Mrs Liedtke was a low-key 40-minute ceremony located in the museum district of tne city No protestors greeted Bush at his arrival or departure He came to Houston from Montgomery Ala and was continued his travels after the service to Lafayette La Mrs Liedtke died Wednesday The family requested her age and the cause of her death not be disclosed a spokesman for the Geo Lewis Sons said Bush and Hugh Liedtke among others joined forces in the early 1950s in Midland to form a business named Zapata Petroleum The partnership split up in 1959 with the Liedtkes keeping the land operations and eventually forming Pennzoil Meanwhile Bush moved to Houston and started Zapata Offshore and began his political career first as Harris County GOP chairman and then a Houston Congressman AUSTIN (AP) Early voting in Texas has been accompanied by allegations of fraud including a report that an elderly man was told he must vote a straight Democratic ticket to receive food at a senior citizen center Bee County commissioners have yoted to remove early voting stations from senior centers after receiving the report County Attorney Jose Aliseda said an elderly man had called him to complain said he and his friends had been approached by a worker of Bee County Community Action Agency telling them that their commodities were contingent upon their voting a straight Democratic Aliseda said are people who know better most of the time He knew it was a bogus threat but he was concerned that his friends and others were being manipulated that Pat Sugarek chairwoman of
