New Missouri Highway Maps Distributed Statewide MoDOT, Springfield Missouri's Official Highway Map for 2004, showing new roads and route number changes in growing southwest Missouri, is now available. MoDOT is distributing the maps to highway rest areas, chambers of commerce and visitor centers. Maps also can be picked up at any MoDOT facility, including the Springfield district office at 3025 E. Kearney St. Maps can be ordered online through the MoDOT web site at www.modot.org The highway maps are available free of charge.

The new map, charting Missouri's highway system, shows a number of updates, including: -The new Route 360, extension of the James River Freeway, between U.S. 60413 west of Spring-field and Interstate 44. -The new Route 465 (Ozark Mountain Highroad) between Route 65 and Route north of Branson and Route 76 west of Branson. -A route shift that placed Route 13 with U.S. 160 between Spring-field (South Campbell Avenue) and Reeds Spring Junction.

-A new section of Route 13 east of Reeds Spring between Reeds Spring Junction and Branson West. -Route number changes that show Route 413 joining U.S. 60 between Springfield (at Kansas Expressway) and a point two miles west of Billings; and Route 413 between U.S. 60 two miles west of Billings and Reeds Spring. Also highlighted on the map is Historic Route 66, with several stretches still in use as secondary state roads or outer roads in southwest Missouri.

The old highway, replaced by 1-44, once was known as the Main Street of America. The location of College of the Ozarks at Point Lookout near Branson is shown on the state map for the first time. Additions include the communities of Fremont Hills and Saddlebrooke in Christian County, Goodnight in Polk County and the renamed Evergreen in Laclede County. Inset maps found on the back of the state map show Springfield, Branson, Lake of the Ozarks area, Joplin, Kansas City, St. Joseph, Sedalia, Columbia, Jefferson City, St.

Louis, Cape Girardeau and Katy Trail State Park. The map commemorates the bicentennial of the Lewis and Clark expedition of 1804-05 following the Louisiana Purchase from France. The transaction greatly expanded U.S. territory. The explorers' route across Missouri is outlined in brown on the new map and marked at various points with a logo of the two men pointing westward.

The marked route follows state highways closest to the Mississippi River south of St. Louis and the Missouri River between St. Charles and the Missouri-Iowa state line north of Rock Port. Fidelity Communications is issuing the following warning to its 20,000 customers across the state: Be careful where you click when visiting adult sites. Offers of "free content can be misleading. Say you're surfing the web and come across an adult entertainment site that claims to offer content for "free and doesn't require a credit card number for access.

All you have to do is download a "viewer or "dialer" program, it says. But there's a catch: Once the program is downloaded on to your computer, it disconnects your dialup Internet connection and reconnects you to an international long-distance phone number. You then return to the Internet through an Internet Service Provider located in the foreign country initially called. The customer is then directed to an adult-content Web site hosted on a computer in the United States and is billed at up to $7 to $8 a minute. The charges appear on your long distance bill.

The threat isn't limited to dial-up users. If you have broadband service but your computer's modem is still connected to a phone line, the program will use the modem to dial the number. "It's pretty devious really," said Craig Montgomery, Fidelity public relations manager. "It shuts your computer's speakers off so you don't even know it's dialing. We know of at least 150 cases where our customers have incurred long distance charges this way." Customers can end up with a phone bill for hundreds of dollars for calls to places like Vanuatu in the Southwest Pacific, Chad, Guyana or Madagascar.

Here's how you can minimize your chances of downloading a "viewer" or "dialer" program that could turn content into an expensive mistake: Be skeptical when you see opportunities to view "free" content on the web. Free doesn't always mean free. Clicking "OK" isn't always okay. Don't click OK unless you know exactly what youre agreeing to. Read online disclosures carefully.

They may be buried several clicks away in pages of small print. In addition, read the language in the gray boxes on your screen. Beware of any program that enables your modem to re-dial to the Internet. If you see a dialog box on your computer indicating that it's dialing when you didn't direct it to, cancel the connection and hang up. Check the number you're dialing and continue only if it's a local call.

Get an international block placed on your long distance service. Some phone companies offer the block at no charge. Keep your computer updated with all the latest Microsoft patches by going to www.windowsupdate. com. If you have Windows XP, these patches are downloaded automatically.

Check your computer for these types of dialer programs. Some good programs for eradicating them are SpyBot, available at and Ad Aware, at http:www.lavasoft de. If the content you want to view leads to a "viewer" or "dialer" program or you find unauthorized charges on your phone bill, file a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission, toll-free, at 1-877-FTC-HELP (1-877-382-4357), or use the complaint form at www.ftc gov. "There are hundreds of these phone dialer pom sites out there," said Mike Gorzik, Fidelity's internet customer care supervisor. "You can be infected by just visiting the site and clicking the wrong box, like one that asks if you want to view something.

It will automatically download the program if you say 'yes' by hitting OK." Gorzik recommends avoiding sites that offer "free" content. "If you're going to view adult material, you should stay with the more well-known, reputable sites," he said. HIGHWAY CHURCH OF THE NAZARENE north ot Av on oM Hwy ft Sixwtay School -10 m. Gasoline Prices And Demand Continue To Rise Jefferson City The return of higher gasoline demand, lower gasoline imports and continued low crude oil supplies before the summer driving season are supporting higher gasoline prices, the Missouri Department of Natural Resources' Energy Center reported today in the Missouri Energy Bulletin. Preliminary data from the U.S. Department of Energy shows first quarter 2004 gasoline demand reaching an all-time record of nearly 8.8 million barrels per day. Factors contributing to the rise in gasoline demand this year are economic growth and the early end to severe winter weather over many areas of the country. To a lesser extent, many consumers may be less sensitive to gasoline prices at these levels, having experienced them off and on again over the last few years.

The average retail price paid for regular unleaded gasoline the United States was $1.78 per gallon on April 5, while Missouri's average price was $1.63, an increase of 3.3 cents from a month ago. The agency's biweekly transportation fuels survey polled service stations throughout the state on the price of regular unleaded gasoline, diesel fuel, B-20 biodiesel fuel and E-85 ethanol.
