This makes me feel worse than a polite-sounding "hi." I have answered people with, "Come back and I'll tell you" and "I can't tell you, you're walking away from me." I am tempted to answer people looking away after they say it with, "I'm over here." GENTLE READER: We did do away with "How are you?" as a question. Did Miss Manners forget to tell you? Except for the excessively literal-minded and some troublemakers, people now understand "How are you?" to be a ritual greeting, requiring only the ritual answer "Fine, thank you," regardless of the medical, emotional and financial state of the person who is asked. This is so accepted a practice that one has to make a special effort when using the same words socially to inquire into another person's well-being: "I haven't seen you in so long, and I've been thinking about you please, do tell me how you are." DEAR MISS MANNERS: I was baffled by the behavior of friends at Thanksgiving. Two of the couples I invited to my home had very good reasons to cancel after having accepted a two o'clock dinner invitation.

One couple said that although they could not come for dinner, they would stop by in the late afternoon, and the other couple said they would come by in the evening. Is it not the privilege of the host to determine when he will tain? Should it not be up to me offer an alternative time if I or has it become customary guests to decide when they visit? If I prefer to entertain once, how do I handle the tion? As it turned out, I served big meal, and entertained couple, later in the afternoon. nearly 10 P.M., the other called to say they were on way after an unexpected delay their dinner. I told them we tired and not to come, and replied that I had ruined Thanksgiving. GENTLE READER: Miss.

Manners trusts that you, at had a pleasant Thanksgiving and counted your blessings late into the night. One blessing is that you have. friends to whom it is important to -4 pay you their respects on. Thanksgiving itself, even though they had good reasons for having to cancel their acceptance of your dinner invitation. As the onlygood reasons Miss Manners knows for such a drastic reversal.

are severe illness and death, they must care for you deeply. It would be more of a blessing if they respected your convenience, but we can't ask for everythinger Well, perhaps we could ask thatthey not turn on you spitefully if, after having inconvenienced you by canceling, they are barred from inconveniencing you even more. Before you went to bed, should have counted as another blessing having been rescued from the friendship of such people. HOLIDAY GIFT BASKETS designed by Coffee Service, Inc.
