A new stage area has been erected at the fair grounds for the benefit of entertainers and spectators alike. The stage is located adjacent to the general exhibits building, and tonight will feature both Amber" and variety show entertainer Mark Sparks. Amber will be back on Friday night as well, when local talent will also grace the fair stage. Mark Sparks, who will be on the stage tonight is billed as a one man sideshow," doing comedy, magic, juggling, ana fire eating.

Officers from the Douglas and The 1989 Douglas County Fair got underway Wednesday evening with television personality Sammy Good appearing on the new stage, next to the general exhibits building.

A large variety of general exhibits items was entered Tuesday in preparation for Wednesday's judging, and the fair will jump into full swing today with more activities scheduled. Perishable items were judged Tuesday evening with other general exhibits judged Wednesday. junior and open dairy cattle 1 be judged today (Thursday) beginning at 9:30 a.m., and junior and open beef will be judged beginning at 9 a.m. Friday. The fair runs through Saturday night.

A market steer show and sale will be held for junior exhibitors in Douglas, Ozark and Wright counties. Steers in this show must have been entered at the February weigh-in. The show will begin at about 9:30 a.m. Fnday, with the sale to be held at approximately 6 p.m. Saturday in tne livestock show arena.

Larry Werth is in Junior Rodeo Will Be Held Here Friday, July 21 The Ava Saddle Club will sponsor a junior rodeo Friday night, July 21 at the Ava Saddle Club Arena west of town. All events will be open to both boys and girls, with categories scheduled for ages 6 to 16. Books will be open one day only, Fnday, July 21, a.m. until rodeo time. Jackpot roping will be held following the junior rodeo, with both amateur and open divisions planned.

Conflicting statements in Almost' exactly one week from the time Kelle Ann Workman is believed to have been abducted from the church yard where she was mowing grass, the investigation changed from that of an abduction to murder. The body of the 24-year-old Dogwood resident was found at about 7 pm. Friday evening, July 7, in Christian County, about seven or eight miles from the Dogwood Cemetery where she was last seen alive. The body was found by a Christian County farmer and his son, Douglas County Sheriff Roldan Turner said he body was found just off Highway about six miles west of Oldfield, in the edge of the Mark Twain National Forest. The badly decomposed body was submerged in a pool of water from the waist down, officers said.

Positive identification was made Saturday through the use of dental records. Hundreds of officers, neighbors, and family members searched the area throughout the weekend, and early in the following week her parents, Stanley and Joan Workman, announced that they were offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of persons responsible for her abduction. That offer is still good. Officers from four different agencies are investigating the deaih of Kelle Workman due to the circumstances of the case.

Officers believe she was abducted from the church property in Douglas County, but the body was found in Christian County, so both sheriff departments are involved in the investigation. And because Douglas County is in the Highway Patrol's Troop with headquarters at Willow Springs, and Christian County is in Troop Springfield, both patrol troops have investigators working on the case. Webster County officers also got involved in the search for Workman last weekend, and have been helping check out some of the hundreds of leads officers have received. As for whether the case is treated as an abduction or a murder, both Shenff Turner and Sheriff Whitney agree it is being handled as a murder.

"I have no qualms at all about calling it murder, Whitney said If we ever find out where she was murdered, whether it was in my county or in Steves county (Christian County), it was still a murder. said Turner. Water Safety Instruction To Begin July 19 A water safety instructors course will be given at the Ava City Pool beginningjuly 19. Upon completion of this course, the student will be certified to teach Red Cross swimming classes and some water safety courses. Prerequisites for the course are that the student be 17 years of age or older, and possess a current Lifeguard Certificate or Emergency Water Safety Certificate.

Then in another incident in the same area, some 40 plants were seized by the sheriffs department, and one man was arrested. The name of that individual is not being released at this time due to the circumstances of the investigation.

Due to the condition of the body, a Kansas City pathologist who came to Ozark Saturday was unable to determine a cause of death. A more complete report is expected, although Turner said Wednesday he has not heard anything more. Christian County Sheriff Steve Whitney said here Monday that if the pathologist cannot determine for certain what did kill Kelle Workman, he will attempt to give some decisions on how she did not die. Bnxey has been ordered to comply with the city ordinance regulating such structures within 30 days from Julv 15 The houses are located just south of the public squam east of Citizens Bank Council Orders Crack Down On Traffic Violations The City Council Monday evening at its regular meeting ordered the Police Department to crack down on traffic violations, especially speeding, failing to stop at stop signs and other related driving practices of all motorists.

Six new hand held radios and two additional radar guns have also been ordered to assist the police officers 1 opened Tuesday night and will through Saturday Concrete work on two public parking lots is scheduled to be done this week The lot east of the sheriffs office will be done first then curb and guttering will be done on the parking lot on East Washington Avenue, adjacent to the Community Center parking lot That lot was cut down and graded last week in preparation for concrete work Mayor Bud Norman also reported that the sidewalks from Red Bud Village to the square should be completed and opened this week These sidewalks have not been officially opened because handrails are not yet completed Council will hold a special meeting on Friday, July 21, at 6.30 p.m. for wage review Since this meeting will deal entirely with personnel, the meeting will be held in executive session the general exhibits building, at the Douglas County Fair Wednesday morning. The fair Ava residents will be asked to conserve water this weekend while a new pump is being installed at one of the citys wells. It is anticipated that the work will be completed in one day and it is not likely that anyone will notice a significant difference in water supply during the shut-down of the well Nevertheless, the city is asking that residents refrain from unnecessary water usage this weekend such as washing cars or watering lawns Sometime ago it was determined that the pump at well No 4 near Emerson Elect nc was not producing at full capacity After an engineering study was completed it was realized that a larger pump should be installed. So this weekend, Layne-Westem Co of Kansas City, will install a four-inch submersible pump and 60 horsepower motor in the well If the work goes according to schedule, the well should be back in full operation by Monday.

In the meantime, the Ava City Council is pursuing possibilities of drilling a new well and is looking for a grant to help make that goal reality. Engineers have determined that the best location is on Water Tower Hill in southeast Ava where die 75,000 gallon tower is located. This site is attractive for several reasons, not the least of which is the fact that the city already owns the property. Andersen Engineering has proposed that the city install a booster pump in the main water line leading to an area in east Ava where pressure is low. Council indicated at Monday's regular meeting that this will be done even before the status of a new well known.

Mayor Bud Norman reported that the new street sweeper is working well and Citizens Can Assist In Marijuana Eradication Clarence V. Clinkingbeard, pioneer Ava businessman, funeral director, and civic leader for more than 60 years, died at about 1 p.m. last Thursday afternoon, July 6, at St. Johns Regional Health Center, Springfield, following a sudden ulness. Funeral services were held at 10 a.m.

Monday at Clinkingbeard Chapel, Ava, with the Rev. Mike Linderman and Arthur Hicks officiating. Burial was in Ava Cemetery. Clinkingbeard was a funeral director and co-owner of Clinkingbeard Funeral Homes in Ava and Gainesville, and had served the Ava civic community well, sitring on boards and councils both on the local and regional level. He was a member of Ava Masonic Lodge No.

26 and a charter member of the Ava Lions Club. He was a member of the Missouri Funeral Directors Association for more than 60 years and was also a member of the National Funeral Directors Association, as well as a 9th District Member of MFDA. Clarence served on the Ava School Board for several years and sat on various city boards including Ava City Council, the Ava Planning and Zoning Commission, and Ava Industrial Development Corporation board. He was also a longtime member of the Ava Area Chamber of Commerce and served as Douglas County Coroner for rveral years. More than 3,200 marijuana ilants were pulled in western uglas County during the past week, with one arrest being made Now Douglas County Sheriff Roldan Turner is calling on area residents to get involved in the eradication of the illegal plant before it is harvested and hits the streets.
