with a view to studying the exact difference between mukallonge and pickerel and we shall look for more light on the subject now Freeman of the State Universi ty sent to the Michigan State Supreme Court a letter worded about as follows Tour decision as to the unconstituionali ty of the local option law will have the same effect on the country as the Dred Scott decision did on abolition and will make thousand of voters for the third party As a plain man I do not believe in legal twistings and The letter was written on State University library paper and signed Freeman It was returned to the governor and by him referred to the Board of Regents It is likely to cause Mr Freeman considerable trouble as it is taken by the court as an authoritative document from the university An exchange says that ten new passenger locomotives have just been built for the St Paul road with special reference to the new contrivance to be adopted at Wadsworth with a view to the fast train The contrivance in question is a long tank laid between the rails and filled with water The locomotives are provided with a spout which will ex tend into the tank and the suction produced by the motion of the trafh will fill the engine tank without stopping the train or slacking speed It is said the tank will be two miles long By this means the time of the fast train between Chicago and Milwaukee will be reduced to two hours and fifteen minutes the number of stoppages between Milwaukee and Chicago being two instead of three -The faculty of the State Univesrity at Madison yestesdsy afternoon awarded scholarships The carbonic or leavening gas produced by the powders indicates their strength and their true value may be ascertained by considering tbe amount of this gas in connection with their inert matter or residuum as shown above The higher the percentage of gas and the lower the percentage of residuum the better the baking powder These percentages as found in some of the most familiar powders are given as follows: Per Cent of Per Cent of Name Leavening Ga Residuum Boyal U40 745 Sterling J1 J2 63 1060 1268 De Land's 10 8242 Gem Alum 846 36A7 Forest City Alum 780 2404 Silver Star Alum 890 8148 Kenton knowledge of the comparative value of the different brands To illustrate with the percentages give the two powders before compared: the Royal containing 118 parts of leavening gas to 105 in its excess of strength is 3 in 105 or 124 per cent Royal is therefore 124 per cent stronger as well as 71 per cent purer than etc The relative strength and purity of all the powders can be computed in like
