A regrettable incident occurred at the meeting of the Athy Branch of the League on bundav. A resolution suhmitf-fr? condemning the hiring out of reaping and binding machines in the district. The chairman (the Rev. J. Staples, C.C.) refused to accept the resolution, and we believe that he acted not only within his right in so doing, but, at the same time, exercised a very wise discretion.

The subject of that resolution is too big for-isolated treatment by a local branch of the National League, and it would be travelling outside their jurisdiction for any branch to deal with it in the nanner proposed. We feel the greatest sympathy for the labourers in their trials and difficul- culties. We have always advocated their interests whereever possible. For this reason we regret all the more their action in leaving the meeting in a body, consequent on the decision of the chairman. We believe that on calm reflection they will come to see their error.

Whatever opinions people may have about the advantages or disadvantages of machinery to the community at large, we must recognise the fact that machinery is now in general use in all agricultural countries, whether for good or ill. It cannot be ignored, and the country that attempts to ignore it will simply be left behind in the struggle for existence. Irish farmers have to meet foreign competition at prices reduced to a very low level by machinery and facilities of transit. How can they meet that competition if they do not use one of the most important factors in enabling foreigners to send their grain cheaply to market Let us suppose that all machinery was prohibited in harvest operations during the present year in Athy district, what wonld be the result Why, simply this that the farmers next year would be, discouraged from tilling at all, and would be forced to turn their lands to grass or meadowing. The labourers should not lose sight of the fact that they cannot get good wages' and.

steady employment unless the men who employ them are prosperous. If the farmer cannot pay his way, the labourer must inevitably suffer. and bad prices wM surely entail' low wages and irregular employment We have WTitten thus far general principles, but to come to the parti, tular machinery aimed at by the propos4 Important TO FARMERS, MERCHANTS St OTHERS. rjnZ BRUNSWICK Private Advance Office, X. 4.
