I 10 RUTLAND DAILY HERALD THURSDAY MORNING OCTOBER 28 1971 Tullar Brothers Take Thetford Past Rebels Rockets Crush Canaan As Wilbur Scores Four Tne game was well handled and well controlled by Bob Parro and Bob Abrahamson The win moved Thetford upset only by South Rovalton early in the season into quarter-final tournament action against Sacred Heart Saturday Little Steve Hubbard injured action for the winners later Thetford had 17 shots on goal Palmer notched seven relatively came up with several fine blocks in the early going got back into to 11 for Leland and Gray while easy saves to nine Rochester while Bunnell had five Canaan outshot the Rockets 20-16 Other Rocket standouts were fullbacks Mike Wood who had an assist and Barry Sherman both of whom excelled defensively SMC Club Team -1 triumph over Leland and Gray in the opening round of the -S soccer tourney Playing in perfect weather before a good-sized crowd at the Woodstock Country School field Ted Peters' 12-1-0 Panthers were thwarted for a half by Dick Omands 8-5-0 Rebels before the Tullars tore a 1 -1 tie apart with their heroics Frank Cutting cashing irt too only 18 seconds apart at the 7:15 and 7:33 marks in the third quarter Following a scoreless first quarter dominated by Thetford's CVL divisional champions both clubs got on the board in the second period Rendy Tullar toed in a pass from Pat Tullar at the 9:40 mark and the left-footed boomer gave the Panthers a 1 -0 lead It stood up until Glenn Brown curved a perfect corner kick right into the net to get the Rebels even with only 40 seconds lett to play in the half Although conversion of corner kicks via the direct route is a rather rare occurence in soccer Brown's stunner was hardly a fluke Glenn turned the trick twice in one game during the regular season The equalizer fired Leland and Gray up but the explosive tallies by the Tullars switched momentum back to Thetford in the third period and goalie George Palmer who had a much easier afternoon than goalie Dennis Nau made the edge stand up The Panthers lost a goal shortly before the two -goal outburst Rendy Tullar rammed a short indirect kick past Nau but officials ruled that the ball failed to make a complete rotation and the Petersmen had to try it again This time Nau came up with a great save on Mike Waterman's point-blank bomb Moments later though Frank Cutting converted a Rendy Tullar pass and beat Nau neatly to make it 2-i Seconds later Pat Tullar turned a long left -footed boot by Doug Dresser into an insurance tally that took a lot of the starch out of the Rebels Nau came up with a couple of saves on Rendy Tullar in the final period after Leland and Gray threatened with a couple of corner kicks and save on a shot by Jody Boyle killed the Rebels' last serious threat The winners got fine games at fullback from Dresser and Tim Caldwell Iwhile Dave Fontaine and Tim Newell played well in front of Nau Thetford playing without Mike Fifield injured and out for
