MCE 10 Cmubwg (M.) Daily News, Wcdnerfay, June 16,1965 Punished Demo Elected by GOP COLUMBIA, S.C. (UPI) — Rep. Albert Watson, who vacated his congressional seat after being punished by the Democratic party was reelected Tuesday as South Carolina's first Republican congressman since Reconstruction. Watson defeated the Democratic candidate, state Rep. 'Preston Callison, by a 5 to 2 margin in a special election to fill the vacancy in ths 2nd Congressional District. The district includes Aiken, home town of Sen. Strom Thurmond, (R-S.C.),, who bolted the Democratic party 'to support GOP presidential -candidate Barry Goldwater last iall. Watson also had campaigned for Goldwater and was stripped of his seniority 'wn'en Congress convened in January. He resigned and said he would seek reelection as a republican. "This is not a personal vie-, tory for myself," said Watson. "This is a party victory. It is a victory for the people." ' Callison said he hoped his defeat would stir South Carolina Democrats into setting up an effective organization to meet a tide of GOP candidates expected in next year's elections. v JJ£atson has been prominently mentioned as a likely candidate for the U.S. Senate in 1966 for the seat now held by Donald Russell. (UPI)—The search for a blonde, 14-year-old baby sitter who vanished a week ago entered its sixth day today with police still checking out a once-promising ,lead to her whereabouts. Minneapolis police received a tip Tuesday night that Barbara Iversen, a junior high school girl, was being held hostage; by two men in a suburban home. He said he did not believe the tip was a deliberate harassment of the police. Vanished Wednesday i Barbara vanished , last Wednesday night while babysitting for Mr. and Mrs. Glen Hanson, a neighbor couple in suburban Shoreview. Hanson left home for his job about 11:15 p.m., and his wife returned home about 3:30 a.m. Mrs.. Hanson said she did not see Barbara, and assumed the girl had gone home for a moment, saw Mrs. Hanson had arrived and decided not to return. The next morning. Barbara's brother came to take her home and the disappearance was first noted. Police questioned neighbors, and many mentioned a car with a "noisy muffler" which hiay have stopped ;i: front of the Hanson home about 12:30 a.m. One said he saw a young iian in the shadows. All agreed that the car sped away, squealing its tires, and that a girl .screamed for help. But no one notified authorities. Circuit Court Judge Maurice A. David of the Bartholomew Superior Court has assumed jurisdiction as special judge in the complaint for divorce filed by Georgia Ramer against Kenneth Ramer. i The complaint for possession ,filed by Lester George .• Bultman and Emma Mae Bultman against William L. and Carole Lee Roberts has been set for trial July 1. In the estate of the late Leota Bertha Lucas, the executor's demurrer to the answer to the petition to sell real estate has been set for argument June 19. 'The final report submitted in the estate of the Lucian Atherton was approved and-the petition to transfer assets to .the executor was granted. The estate was declared fully administered and closed. In the transfer of claim filed by Marie Whipple against the estate of the late Cora Cann Underwood the claimant filed a petition for leave to introduce further evidence. British Oldster Marks 109th Anniversary LONDON (UPI) — John Turner, believed to be Britain's oldest man, celebrated his 109th birthday Tuesday. Turner remains cheerful and healthy despite failing eyesight and hearing. He is a teetotaler and does not smoke. • "I feel fine," he told well- wishers at a birthday party in a local Red Cross center. Queen Elizabeth sent a special telegram of greetings. Someone asked Turner for the key to long life. "I cannot give you one," Turner said. "I am not an extraordinary man, just an ordinary man who has lived an extraordinary time." ?
