The officials also directed to be a better way of letting students know more about the facets of a career than just listening to someone talk about it.

She initiated a plan of having students go out to visit merchants, professional people and trade representatives "on the job," and put that plan into practice at Soquel three years ago. Last year the plan was expanded to Harbor and Santa Cruz High Schools, as it will be again on Nov. 15. Only junior and senior students may make the visits. 15. Introducing students to careers is not a new concept in the high school district, explains Kay Harry of Soquel High School, but putting the students "out where the action is" was initiated at Soquel just three years ago. Before that time students sat and listened while representatives of many different vocations came to talk to them. Mrs. Harry, who is a counselor at Soquel, felt there had three cabinet members from eluding an assembly hall, library, home economics, admin the faction to resign from the istrative offices, and an auto shop.

There are approximately 400 students now enrolled at theij school. The English and reading 1 3 classes have been doing government and called for an immediate party convention. Counselors then match up students with their selected vocations. Mrs. Harry says only rarely does a student fail to visit the career of his first choice.

The four most popular fields among juniors and seniors in the Santa Cruz High School District are forestry, airlines occupations (pilots, stewardesses or mechanics), teaching and law enforcement. A visit is voluntary on the part of the student. Career day is always a minimum day, so no student is "getting out" of a disliked class by signing up for a career visit. Those who don't want to make a visit are free to go home. Last year 587 students signed up to visit 108 businesses, professional i or resource persons.

This year half of Soquel's junior and senior classes, 450 students, already have signed up. Some of last year's juniors are making a second visit, Mrs. Harry says. Somehave selected a different career this year. Others have chosen the same career but have asked to make a visit to a different place.

"The colleges, as well as the businesses of the county, have been fantastically cooperative," Mrs. Harry says. "Last year we phoned them all to ask if they would accept student visitors, and not one of them refused us." Counselors have been surprised to find that almost every career selected by students is represented in some way in Santa Cruz County. The major exception to that is the airlines fields. So many students are interested in airlines vocations, those who are interested in any aspect of airlines work are taken to San Jose Airport by bus in a group.
