most compatible running mate McGovern would be likely to turn to one of three fellow senators Walter Mondale of Minnesota Frank Church of Idaho or Gaylord Nelson of Wisconsin Even though leaders of organized labor are pushing Sen Burch Bayh of Indiana McGovern would be more inclined to do something else to appease union officials If McGovern deems it necessary to appeal to southern and border state voters Gov Reubin Askew of Florida and Jimmy Carter of Georgia would rank highest Askew because of a favorable national image and Carter because the senator regards him as the most powerful southern governor McGovern would also give serious consideration to Arkansas and Phillip Padgett native of Florida Two other captains were in tlie group They were identified as William Raymond Bean 29 20000-man South Vietnamese task force pushing northward in a drive to recapture enemy-held Quang Tri Province continued to encounter moderate resistance Thursday in the second day of the operation But government officers and senior US advisers seemed optimistic One American said the counteroffensive was going better than anticipated We thought it would be a damn tough nut he said The North Vietnamese have had almost two months to consolidate their hold on South Vietnams northernmost province which they captured May 1 Saigon military spokesmen reported more than 160 North Vietnamese killed and government losses of six dead and 34 wounded in the first two days of the push up Highway 1 Three enemy tanks were destroyed and one was captured after the North Vietnamese crew abandoned it with the engine running the spokesmen added A long-range artillery gun three howitzers and seven the prospect that McGovern would have to deal with his Democratic opponents for the last 200 or so delegates needed to assure his own nomination for President The choice of a running mate would be a logical subject for such negotiations McGoverns outlook based on conversations with those at the highest level of his campaign was said to be as follows: He is prepared to select someone who would appeal to Democratic regulars and heal the wounds likely to be inflicted by disputes at the convention Kennedy would be the strongest possibility but if he should reject the nomination Sen Edmund Muskie of Maine would be an attractive second choice Sen Hubert Humphrey of antiaircraft guns also were reported captured More than 1000 more South Vietnamese marines were committed to the drive Thursday in two combat assaults aboard US helicopters With the fresh troops government forces formed a rough east-southwest arc between 6 and 12 miles away from Quang Tri City the provincial capital One unverified field report said the South Vietnamese had retaken Hai Lang a district town on Highway 1 about six miles southeast of Quang Tri City Associated Press correspondent Michael Putzel reported civilian refugees streaming south from the village Government paratroopers liberated another town near Quang Tri Associated Press correspondent Holger Jensen reported The village of Hai Xuan six miles south of the provincial capital had been occupied by the enemy for mqre than two months but government troops encountered virtually no resistance when they entered Thursday 36 05 73 64 73 75 70 89 86 54 Democratic ticket was authoritatively reported Thursday to be Sen Edward Kennedy of Massachusetts But associates of McGovern said that he is convinced that Kennedy wants to hold off a final decision about his availability until the last possible moment and that McGovern had been avoiding a campaign discussion with Kennedy Theyve been circling each other like two bulldogs said one of McGoverns aides in 'describing the reluctance of both senators to pin down the accuracy of the conflicting statements Kennedy has made about the vice presidential nomination McGoverns attitude toward selection of a running mate grew in importance Thursday when the Credentials the foreign press corps and diplomats posted here Wearing prisoners uniforms the 14 Air Force and Navy officers recited their identification numbers birthplaces and the names of their military bases As photographers cameras flashed standing before a battery of microphones in a meeting room at Hanois International Club the prisoners took turns sending brief messages to their families and talking about the Vietnam War and the prospects of peace The first to appear was Capt David Brian Grant 30 a native of Tennessee Standing on crutches with a foot in a plaster cast Grant told his family he loved them very much The second in order of appearance was Capt Charles Allen Jackson 26 It was uncertain whether he said he was from Virginia or West Virginia Jackson whose left arm was wounded said he hoped the war would end as quickly as possible He told newsmen and diplomats he hoped to work for world peace Like Grant Jackson 'was shot down last Saturday His plane was hit over Nghialo between Hanoi and Dienbienphu Grants aircraft came down over Vinh Phu about 60 miles from Hanoi The third officer was identified as Capt William Beekman 25 from Ohio His plane was hit by North Vietnamese anti-aircraft batteries over Tuyen Quang in the mountains 90 miles from Hanoi Two other prisoners were presented together Capt John Paul Cerak 28 and Capt David Burgoyne Dingee 30 Both were shot down last Tuesday at Vinh Phu One captured pilot who did not appear was Capt Richard Francis Logan 26 whose plane was shot down last Tuesday over Hanoi Logan according to North Vietnamese figures the 3700th US pilot downed over Vietnam was in a hospital where a group of journalists was expected to visit him later in the day Also appearing Thursday were Maj Edward Knight Elias 34 of VUULMSASUULMJUIJUULSUL 9 9 0 0 BJ Gifts that grow more precious with time Spassky may be feeling the strain Wednesday he snapped at photographers and for a while there was a yelling match In the process Fischer is assuming mythic proportions His name is on the lips of everybody in Reykjavik In the meantime many details of the match still remain to be settled Fred Cramer of Milwaukee Fischers representative here said Wednesday that Fischer and his attorney were still negotiating with the Icelandic Chess Federation and the International Chess Federation over certain demands For example Fischer has asked for 30 per cent of box office receipts The Icelandic Chess Federation is not happy about this If Fischer gets 30 per cent Spassky is entitled to the same and that would not leave much for the federation which by the time the match is over will have put up nearly $200000 That is about a dollar for every man woman and child in the country With three days to go everything is nearly ready But will Bobby Fischer come? Or having come will he play? ruled out on the basis of sex or race McGovern is unlikely to test the popularity of selecting a woman or black He is equally reluctant to pick someone outside politics who might make embarrassing campaign assertions out of political naivete but one dark horse possibility McGovern has mentioned privately is Kingman Brewster Jr the president of Yale University Many of those mentioned by the McGovern camp may be less than serious prospects in keeping with the traditional political gambit both before and after the convention of mentioning as many politicians as possible as potential vice presidents McGoverns staff has been talking up Kennedy for several weeks The discussion has not stopped in the wake of Kennedys declaration on June 22 that there are absolutely no circumstances under which I would accept a nomination for any national office this year McGovern was said to prefer to consider Kennedys statement a week earlier that he would consider the vice presidential slot if his presence on the ticket were essential to victory in November There were some observers who felt Thursday that the continued discussions about Kennedy could be no more than a tactical ploy by the McGovern camp a wpy of indicating to party regulars that McGovern would have welcomed Kennedys presence on the ticket but could not achieve it Those who have heard McGovern discuss the vice presidency in thelast two days said however that the senator believed Kennedy was still uncertain whether to make Jiimself available The crucial factor was said to A lie tlUUdl IdLlUI Wd Scliu IU (Times News Service) REYKJAVIK Iceland The eccentric and contentious American chess grandmaster Bobby Fischer expected here Thursday morning again failed to show up His championship match with Boris Spassky of the Soviet Union is scheduled to begin on Sunday but although Fischer had been booked on a flight from New York he never boarded the plane There was hope however that he would arrive on Friday The worried members of the Icelandic Chess Federation who have put considerable time and money into the match are working on that hope In any case Fischer will have very little time to adjust his biological clock Spassky for instance arrived here June 21 Although Fischer did not arrive on the 9 am plane another American grandmaster did He was Larry Evans a former United States champion here as a journalist He said that he had not been in communication with Fischer but he expressed confidence that he would show up for the match Fischer is playing a war-of-nerves Evans said That is my personal theory I would not even be surprised if Fischer does not turn up until Sunday just before the game Whether or not Evans is correct there is no doubt that Fischers tactics have built interest in the match almost to unbearable tension Even the normally suave and apparently unflappable Boris What is so rare as a gift of diamonds?
