MASO.V Editor Many lumber merchants have adopted motor trucks to speed up the work and have accomplished this result, in mauy cases, however, they have found that motor trucking is more expensive, dug to the idle time of the truck while loading and unloading. Various expedients have been adopted to avoid this standing time. It is common practice to fit rollers to the truck bed so the load can be dumped as a unit instead of being taken off piece' by piece by hand. Again, a few lumber companies have used yard wagons for making up the loads and provided means for rolling the matte-up loads from these yard wagons to the motor truck. In more recent years there has been a return to the time-honored and efficient system in use with teams, by which several wagons were left in the yards to be loaded while the teams were hauling loads for delivery.

But instead of teams and wagons, tractor trucks and trailers or semi-trailers are This combines the advantages of the old system with the speed aud greater delivery radius of the motor truck. The trailers or semi-trailers are disposed about the yard and loading proceeds while the tractor Is on the road. Thus the tractor to kept moving a maximum number of hourc of the day, which Is necessary to insure eeo-nomy of haulage. Truck manufacturers generally realize the special nature of the lumber business and the peculiar adaptability to it of trailers and semi-trailers. Some of them build special tractors for the sole purpose of hauling those auxiliary vehicles.

And the legislature would make it impossible for a district attorney without backbone and spine before the wet interests to thwart the enforcement of prohibition. 1 We believe there will always be guf- fleient sentiment in Kem county to force the election of public prosecutors -who will not be Indifferent to the star tutee, especially the one ratified by forty-seven states, and approved by toe majority- in Kem county, We do aot believe that the selfish private Interests would ever again have sway in Kern against this predominant sentiment, though there will not be lacking those who would connive at breaking the anti-liquor law. BERLIN, July 22. (Correspondence of the Associated German deficit in food, the difference between the amount produced in Germany and Germanys, normal needs, amounts to 3,600,000 tons of wheat, one million tons of meat and one millloni tons of fats, says the Imerpial Food Ministry. Aug. 25. Shipping facilities connecting thi3 city with the western ports of central and south America will have to be Increased very materially in the near future. If the businessmen of the Pacific coast expect to maintain their trade supremacy in the western section of the countries affected, according to a statement given out today by Benno Schoch the Latin-American representative of the American Finance and Commerce company. Mr.

Schoch says that Great Britain and other European nations are now entering that field with a very strong competition. "The market on the western coast of South America logically belongs to concerns doing business through the port San Franqisco, says Mr. Schoch. And if we desire to hold our share of it, we must provide immediately the tonnage in ships to properly supply the product that market demands. Several district lines between Japanese and South American ports recently have been movement to secure more ships for South America through the Federal shipping hoard Is advocated by Mr.

French anti-clericals appear to he taking alarm at the frequent appearance of bibles and pastors In American moving pictures. M. Aulard, the historian, in an article decrying the far west films, says enough has been seen of the sentimental bandits, and appeals to Americans to keep them for themselves along with their pastors and their bibles. He adds that they give a false idea of the American people. Justify any reasonable expense In securing water.

There are many thousand acres of good land now Under Irrigation which receive only one irrigation per year, and the money expended to secure that one irrigation was well spent. The time will come, and at no far distant date, when these lands will be subdivided into small farms, but the system will have to he abandoned, and a more intensive one installed. with better service and more prater before these lands will make much of an appeal to the careful farmer who to looking for a place to buy and build 'a home. The land on the whole is high class, some of the 'best land In California wDl be found within the boundaries of Kern county, hut without water is almost valueless. The difference in price between land without water, and that which is well supplied with water rune from one to two hundred dollars per acre on the land "alcme without improvement of any kind.

This would show that in many instances one hundred and fifty dollars per acre would not be an enormous sum to spend to secure water. As i9 the amount of water that would be available, only such data as has been gathered by these people who have been using it for the past years I obtainable at the present time, but this data to of great value, for the work generally was taken care of by very competent men. By storing this water ia toe mountains we have the advantage of less heat and greater depth, leaving less water surface exposed to the elements, thereby lng the loos by evaporation. What this saving will amount to in actual water la hard to determine, hut Judging from the experiments in other places, the saving would be very great Pot instance, on the west side of Merced county Miller Lux operate a canal 16 Miles long which at ita head has a capacity of about 900 second feet In some experiments made about twelve years ago, the water was measured Into this canal, and measured out at all points of diversion, and it as found dial the loss as anywhere between 50 and 70 per cent over the '-p HE facilities of our liberty Bond Department will prove, of value to those who find it necessary to dispose of their bonds.
