Hansen Museum is displaying the drawings of Elizabeth "Grandma" Layton through June 30. The exhibit, "Through the Looking Glass: Drawings by Elizabeth Layton," contains 31 colored, contour drawings. The exhibit travels under the auspices of the Mid-America Arts Alliance. She uses the technique of contour drawing in which the artist looks primarily at the subject being drawn and only occasionally at the paper for reference.

In 1980, she won first prize in the Mid-Four competition. Her works have subsequently been exhibited in New York's SoHo art district. The program is presented in part by the Kansas Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts. -tr -to The June artist-of-the-month is Isabelle Tolbert, Junction City. She is displaying China paintings.

Carved duck decoys will be displayed by Earl Barngrover, Wichita, during July. Exhibits open at Stone Gallery HAYS The Stone Gallery, Hays, has two new exhibits on display. Paintings by Charles Stewart, a Taos, N.M., artist, are displayed now. He also currently is exhibiting in Houston, Texas; Denver, Scottsdale, and Taos. He paints in a variety of themes.

Most widely known are his images of Kachina dancers. Transcendental subjects are explored in the oil paintings displayed at the gallery. "3-D, Important Parts Made in USA," an exhibit by Dean Pruner, Hudson, opens Friday with a 7 p.m. reception to meet the artist. The display continues through July 13.

Pruner has exhibited his sculpture, painting and prints throughout Kansas and is featured at Scissors-Paper-Stone Gallery, Lawrence; Udinotti Gallery, Scottsdale, and the Improvisation Gallery, Los Angeles. Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Writers, poets plan meetings The Salina Writers and Poets, known semi-officially as The Salina Writers Group, will hold three regular meetings and a potluck dinner this summer.

The two-hour meetings, which start at 7:30 p.m. in Room 106 of the City-County Building, are scheduled June 19, July 17 and Aug. 10. Writers are encouraged to bring new work to share. The group is planning its first annual potluck dinner June 29 at the home of Rosalie and Weeden Nichols east of Salina.

The dinner starts at 8 p.m. Participants should bring a potluck dish, beverage and table service. The Nichols' home is miles east of the intersection of Crawford Street and Simpson Road on the gravel road. Marshall carvings are featured HAYS The unique collection of limestone carvings by the late Kansas sculptor Inez Marshall is temporarily on display at the old Gibson building here. The exhibit, previously housed at the Continental Sculpture Hall in Portis, includes hundreds of carvings of people, animals, buildings, a Model-T Ford and a covered wagon.

There is no admission charge. For information, write the Stone Gallery, 107 W. 6th, Hays, Kan. 67601, or call 625-7619. No firm decision on signal scrambling LAS VEGAS, Nev.

(AP) Executives of the cable TV industry say they need to scramble the signals that come to them by satellite to make sure owners of backyard dishes can't watch for free what cable subscribers pay for. But they can't agree on whether the signal scrambling must wait until manufacturers start making enough de-scramblers so the million dish owners can be turned into paying customers. Home Box Office and Cinemax, movie channels sold to cable viewers for a monthly fee, already scramble the signal to the West Coast for 12 hours each day. SPACE, a group that represents dish owners and suppliers, has asked Congress to place a two-year moratorium on scrambling so "the sky won't go dark" for those who are watching more than 100 channels of programming. 'Goonies' a hit at the box office HOLLYWOOD (AP) "The Goonies," Steven Spielberg's film about pint-size adventurers, opened last week and zoomed to second place at the box office behind "Kambo: First Blood Part 2." "Goonies," a modern-day pirate tale, captured $9.1 million in 1,705 theaters but didn't match the 1984 summer opening of Spielberg's "Gremlins," which earned $12.5 million in its first weekend.

Spielberg served as an executive producer of "Goonies," which was directed by Richard Donner. In general, box office business this past weekend was off about 20 percent from the same period last year. Last summer's biggest hits "Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom," "Ghostbusters" and Marquee "Gremlins" are a tough act to follow. All eventually topped $150 million, making 1984 the first summer with more than one movie grossing $100 million or more. Nevertheless, Warner Bros, distribution president Barry Reardon said he believes that "Goonies" will show staying power through the summer.

Reardon also said that last summer's big receipts were caused partly by Hollywood releasing all its major films at the beginning of the season which led to a soft middle. A clear hit so far this summer is "Rambo," in which Sylvester Stallone returns to Vietnam to wage a one-man guerilla war. "Rambo" has earned $70.4 million since it was released just three weeks ago.
