sons who were given the entire lower-level floor This lower suite of bedrooms became a sanctuary where the boys could go and come freely and have their own entrance out to the lake for swimming and boating The architects first challenge was the pork-chop shape of the land itself 50 feet wide at the street level winding down a narrow neck to the lake itself He felt that the lake and the slope down to it was a primary feature of the property but how to take advantage of it was the question He decided to build on the neck of land letting the three stories stand tall and to curve the forms I found that by rotating essentially all the spaces and connecting them together in a kind of sawtooth configuration practically all rooms would have a view of the lake explains Steele Although the house appears to be only one story high at its entry side it opens out into a large round silo effect at the other end of the house In the top of the turret or third-floor level is the master bedroom suite The intermediate floor between parent bedroom retreat and childrens suite on the lower level is the common family living area for living cooking eating etc A metal spiral open staircase ties all three levels together in a dramatic way It is like a big spiral column in the center of the house takeiup far less space than a conventional staircase and according to Steele it acts as a sort of punctuation mark for the interior of the house As to the interior decoration it is essentially simple straightfor-ward and sparse By manipulating volume and light in an exciting way and by the tension created in the way one space interacts with another a structure assumes a certain completeness Personal artifacts are needed of course and a few choice pieces of art then well-chosen upholstery and cabinet pieces can be minimal says the architect The couple who built this house wanted a completely neutral background So the ceramic tiles in the entry dining room and kitchen are off-white structural stoneware' The wall-to-wall carpeting throughout the house is a neutral wheat color and walls are white Seating consists of a conversation group made of seating modulars as well as additional modules in various shapes to complement the architecture Window walls are of tinted glass but vertical blinds are used where glare or privacy requires In the case of this 6000 square feet of house the rounded shapes achieve the desired visual and living effect Steele says there is a continuing demand in his area for such an imaginative house By MARILYN HOFFMAN 1978Christian Science Monitor So it proved with this Michigan house which is sheathed in lightly stained redwood siding specially milled with a V-groove and a half-round to dramatize shadow effects It was designed by architect Mark Steele of Steele Bos of Birmingham Mich I Steeles problem was to design a practical but aesthetically unusual and pleasing lakeside house for a family of five It had to meet the needs of the husband who is a builder-developer his wife a professional graphic designer who planned the interiors and their three teen-age odern architecture often dictates a specifically new and modern approach to interior design If you choose to live in a house which stands as a work of art or a unique piece of sculpture the architectural interest of the space itself takes over and conveys its own design statement Furnishings can then be minimal Elmo Zumwalt former vice chief claimed (in a veiled reference to the bomber controversy) that the story is current among Jones military peers that he has been known to alter his military advice to conform to the perceived views of his civilian superiors Various other commentators have labeled tlve general pliant managerial and intellectual rather than combative All this stung Armed Forces Journal (AFJ) into a spirited response last month and in only the second two-page editorial it has printed in 116 years it counterattacked in Gen Jones defense quoting Assistant Defense Secretary Russell Murray as saying it was absurd to call him a patsy and retired Air Force Lt Gen Ira Eaker who praised his experience character and competence Others credit Gen Jones with being the principal and most vocal supporter of the AWACS (Airborne Warning and Control System) radar plane program when it was in deep kimchi 'and with convincing Defense Secretary Harold Brown that it was wrong for the Air Force to kill its last wing of F-15 fighters and replace it with two other wings of F-16 fighters or A-10 ground attack aircraft In concluding the editorial suggested that critics may not know how much the president the secretary of defense and the OSD (Office of the Secretary of Defense) civilians really count on Davey Jones advice If Gen Jones looks like a manager he insists he doesnt feel like one I spent a good share of my military career being a commander he asserts During the Korean war he flew 29 bombing missions over North Korea and later served in Vietnam with the Seventh Air Force first as deputy commander for operations then as vice commander A married man who lives with his wife and 17-year-old son David at Fort Meyer in Arlington Va he is the holder of 30 decorations and service awards including the Distinguished Flying Cross the Air Medal with oak leaf cluster and the Legion of Merit I dont see that were managerial types he says observing that within the chiefs theres a good balance of those who have had combat experience When you dont have a war the tendency is to categorize people as managers and when youve got the war youve got the categorization as fighters he ventures If you had to categorize my background as managerial vs command Ive spent more time in the command and operations side of the house and I still try to keep a hand in it for instance there have only been a few ties in my career that I havent been in the cockpit doing the flying If Gen Jones has a mentor its none other than the celebrated Curtis LeMay bombastic cigar-chomping architect of the US bombing offensives against Germany and Japan in World War II who rose to become Air Force chief of staff in the early 1960s Today the 72-year-old general who shared the ticket with George Wallace in the latters 1968 presidential bid lives in retirement in Newport Beach Calif I had the opportunity to be aide to General LeMay while he was at Strategic Air Command says Gen Jones describing himself as a student and protege of one of the greatest commanders in the military weve ever had Asked ether Gen Jones will make a good JCS chairman General LeMay replies: Of course hes a great officer Ive got every confidence in the world in him He says he piked Lieutenant Colonel Jones to be his aide because he was a very smart officer and knew the air business very well besides having a sense of responsibility What verdict would General Jones like to see passed on his performance as JCS chairman? A verdict that I did my -very very best to provide advice on the major issues advice that was well thought out that was non-parochial unbiased that took the broader issues of the world into account and that I was helpful in trying to solve the very difficult problems that will face our country Only time will tell whether he will pass the same verdict on the job as Gen Maxwell Taylor did recently when he said: Its very pleasant to be chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff I recommend it to any young man going upD continued from page 4 Behind what he terms his very agonizing decision not to recommend the construction and testing of two additional bombers at a cost of $750 million (particularly in the absence of any concept of deployment and operational capability) lies his firm conviction that there is a need for increasing discipline within the military Were doing much better than we did during the war in Vietnam he says but I believe we still have a great deal more to do Discipline it seems is as incumbent upon a chairman of the JCS as on the lowliest private I was deeply convinced that (the B-l was the way to go and I was a strong advocate for it I tried to make the best possible case I could but when a decision is made by the commander in chief it seems to me that it is not appropriate for us to do anything but try to carry out that decision in as faithful a way as we possibly can Gen Jones stresses that when asked for a personal view on an issue by a congressional committee he will always give it even when at variance with the ad-ministrationBut this is different than going out and making a speech or going over on the Hill and trying to persuade people to override the president Gen Jones alleged apostasy over the B-l also drew a little naval fire In a newspaper column earlier this year Adm 14.
