i The new year was given a noisy welcome last night at the midnight hour. Five minutes before the death of the odd year the pandemonium commenced. The whistles in the oil fields were unloosened and in town the discharge of revolvers and the explosion of firecrackers made a din that was terrific for a while. A great many people were on the streets at the midnight hour, and they made the welkin ring with yells. A great many watch parties were held throughout the residence district, and an enjoyable evening was spent in speeding the parting year and welcoming the new one.

Ten minutes after 12 the town resumed its wonted quiet, and those who stayed down town to assist in welcoming the new year wended their way homeward, feeling that they had done their duty and exhibited the proper spirit of the season. Celebrated Her Birthday. The residence of Mr. and Mrs. S.

Oil operators are discussing the advisability of submitting to the new legislature the draft of a proposed law, making pipe lines common carriers.

It is insisted in existing conditions that the large companies, such as the Standard Oil and the Associated, have the -smaller producers at their mercy, and the proposed new statute is intended to break a monopoly. In the event the bill that is being drafted is submitted, the issue is certain to provoke one of the heated contests of the coming legislative session. Oil Stock in Demand. SAN FliAN CISCO, December 31. The market for dividend-paying oil shares has shown more activity of late.

The steady monthly payments by the leading companies seems to have attracted the attention of the investing public to this class of security. The organization of a new distributing company, the Independent Producers Agency. of Kern county, has also served to build up confidence, giving the assurance of a better price for the product than might be expected with one big buyer in the field, powerful enough to choke off all competition. It is said that the new association can now depend upon a production of 415,000 barrels per month. The Imperial Oil Company has just declared a monthly dividend of 20 cents per share, and the Thirty-Three Oil Company one of 10 cents per share, both payable on January 6th.

To Keep Off Locators. City Attorney H. T. Miller, who recently returned from Coalinga, where he has been looking after some oil interests, says that the owners of various holdings in that section are watching the locators very carefully, now that the first of the year has arrived to guard against SATURDAY, JANUARY 7, 1905.
