Why do they not support the man who hag been selected by that party as one of its nominees? No In this campaign you find the Republican and Democratic nominees lined up side by side making the fight In collusion and conspiracy This Is the fight of progression against retrogression It la a glorious light and I am glad to come back to you ngaln We are on our toes and ready We have made the oilier side Concede that the humanitarian laws that have been placed on the statute books of California are good laws: and this Is the great thing It is the I nerve sense and ability of the people of California against special privilege i Judge ns liy our labors and not by the For Lease or Rent UNION PLANING MILL Corner Lafayette St Stockton Address Bruce Martin No 4 Lodi Cal LAME PEOPLE JILES PAINTING -PAPER HANGING TINTING (All Work Guaranteed) I employ the best mechanics In Stockton Phone 3512 or 4343 Shop Miner and Hunter in this state you separated state and local taxation And elnoe 19X0 you individually have paid' bo state taxes at all except an Infinitesimal fraotioa to the Panama-Paciflo Exposition Sines 1910 all of ths taxes of the state of California have been paid by the public service corporation and certain other corporations So when any person makes state ments to you that your state taxes have been Increased those statements are without foundation No Shifting of Burdens It is a favorite argument of the corporation attorney that if you put a burden upon- the publio service corporation it immediately transfers that burden to the people or to its consumers Not so in California These corporations pay the bulk of the taxes of the state and their rates have been Justly reduced in this state by six millions of dollars Fredericks Civil Service Record Again our friends on the other side are humorous In this campaign They present te you their exemplar of the man who wouldn't think of having a political machine in California And have with me the letter of David Evans the Democratic member of the civil service commission of Los Angeles He says over Ills signature that day In and day out In season and out of season one man in the county of Los Angeles has opposed civil service One man has ever fought putting the officials of that county upon merit and efficiency and that man Is the Republican candidate for governor who weeps today about the political machine In the state of California Aren't these gentlemen on the other side funny in this campaign? They changed their sentiments over night Grand Old Party Flopdoodle They tell you that If you want to enter the pearly gates you must return the grand old party to power If you don't believe that my opponent can demonstrate it to you Dont you realize how far we have gone from the old old Idea of partisanship? Go to any city worthy of a name today and ask that city to elect Its chief of police or Its city clerk because his great grandfather voted a Whig ticket in 42 and another ticket in '71 and they will laugh you to scorn All your Judiciary state and local are elected in non-partisan fashion This does not mean the destruction of parties nationally at all It means simply that your state business is your business and ftiat that business can reach its highest efficiency without politics of any sort Wont it be a glorious thing when every man that comes before you as a candidate for a state office comes before you upon his merits or his demerits not upon how his grandfather voted three-quarters of a century ago? Trying to Defeat Fslileman Do you know what the gentlemen on the other side really think of party fealty? I sat through two sessions of the legislature and every time that there came a fight for the good of the people of this state I always found lined up In support of the corporations Democratic Curtin with Republican LeRoy Wright of San Diego When will you learn that you too must overlook party lines? People are doing that too and it is shown by the fact that the Republican party rank and file nominated Jack Eshle-man to lead the party for lieutenant-governor Where are these leaders and generals against the men who think that they are the owners of common humanity If these men could alone go back to the old condition we would gladly let them go but in going back to that condition they want to take us with them and that is Just what we will not do "Until 1911 a few men sat away up there in the seats of the mighty Contemptuously and cynically they looked down upon all the rest of us and they said that they were fit to govern and we were only fit to be governed by them and in the last four years we have reached up to those seats of the mighty in the state of California and we have brought down these men until they stand Just where we stand in the state of California before the law and the government of the state of California they are now only on an equality with the man in overalls upon your street Today eveTy political crook In the state of California is holding up his hands In holy horror and weeping crocodile tears about an economical administration of the affairs of this state Yet they select as their candidate for governor the most expensive and extravagant district attorney upon the face of the earth The records show that It is the most extravagant and costly district attorneys office In the United States of America I hought that we In San Francisco had a pretty good facility for spending but that office beats them all Curtins Splendid Little Graft There is a gentleman who calls himself the Democratic candidate who Is speaking about our dreadfully extravagant administration I want to tell you where his animus comes In this campaign The constitution says that no member of the legislature shall receive any salary or pay or emolument except his salary as a member of the legislature Now there was a splendid little graft that used to be worked before 1911 Theyd appoint hold-over committees of the legislature and then present claims for this work This gentleman received $10600 In violation of the constitution He had the effrontery to pass a bill appropriating $6000 more in 1911 which was promptly vetoed In 1913 he passed the same bill which met the same fate Since 1911 members of the legislature have been compelled to be satisfied with their salaries And this Is the reason that this gentleman today Is the stalking horse of the Republican candidate for governor of the state of California And when he gives you hs figures of extravagance don't forget to deduct $13600 which he didn't get Individual Pays No State Tax Today the Individual householder property owner farmer horticultur-allst and the like pays no state taxes at all In 1910 before we came Into power JOHN FINNEY menta He is mistaken he means Fredericks demandments They did It all In the state of California Never forget that In this campaign Ought to Apologize to Fredericks 'Just see the way he talks about the measures he claims that his candidate put through He ought to apologize to Fredericks for talking about the measures that way Isnt his language awful? Where Are You Stand-patter? "Now you know Mr Honest stand-patter that these leaders of your party did not approve these measures in the past four years and you also know that they do not approve them now How can you then vote for the candidate of your leaders when you know that their platform is mask of hypocrisy? Such hypo crisy as to cause Mike De Young to have an attack of mental hydrophobia The Railroad Commission "I have read of late in the utterances of my distinguished adversary that all the wondrous work of the railroad commission of this state was due to the activity that occurred prior to 1911 The railroad commission before 1911! You had no railroad commission before 19111 You had the railroad and the railroad was the commission "For 30 years under the constitution presumably you had a railroad commission In all that 30 years It did one work It did it well we yield It Its full meed of praise for the work thus well done During that period with a regularity a punctuality a par-ttcularlty a perspicacity a perspicuity It drew its salary every month for 30 years "And beyond that It rendered In all that period Just one decision that is still in existence This decision cost you 30 years of salary so it came very high dearly hug it to yourselves It is the only thing that you have had for 30 years of a railroad commission before 1911 The commission decided that one case as follows: That a man in San Francisco who bought a ticket from San Francisco to Alameda might stop over in the city of Oakland on the same day "Your railroad commission Is a vital and sentient thing It has reduced the rates of public service corpora-I tions In California and I speak by the record In speaking thus by $6-000000 per annum And not alone has your railroad commission reduced these rates by $6000000 but it has won as well a great moral victory Today we have taught every power in this state no matter how great that the biggest thing in the state of California is the people of the state of California and that the government of the people of the state of California must be obeyed by rich and F' 5 '-S' 'Nf JW BEFORE AFTER All persons afflicted with a shortened or weak limb should Investigate our LATEST IMPROVED EXTENSION SHOES and Braces Mr Hittenber-ger of the firm of Hitten-berger Company San Francisco will be at the Sutter Hotel on the 22d of October between the hours of 6 and 7 pm and on the 23d between the hours of 8 and 9 a to demonstrate our LATEST IMPROVED EXTENSION SHOES ARTIFICIAL LIMBS and BRACES Our extension shoes can be worn in any stock shoe with perfect ease and comfort and without detection ONE-ARM PEOPLE We also have something of special Interest to those having had the misfortune of losing an arm above or below the elbow Artificial arms for many years past were worn principally to fill an empty sleeve having no value as a practical appllanoe Mr Dor-rance of Portland Ore having had his arm amputated several yefys ago has finally Invented a hook and arm (called the DOR-RANCE UTILITY HOOK) which actually takes the place of the natural arm for doing almost anything We will ask all people Interested In the above appliances to call on Mr Hlttenberger and see them demonstrated It costs you nothing and may be an asset to you or your friends' comfort If you cannot call send for catalogue II IIITTENBERGER COMPANY 1108 Market Street San Francisco Branch MO 13th St Oakland Cal FORr County Recorder WHY7 Because JOHN FINNEY is now Chief Deputy In the County Recorder's office and ls THOROUGHLY CAPA-BLE of conducting tiie affairs of the office to the best Interest of all the tax payers Mrs DeVries Mrs Carr Mrs Slattery I Mrs A 0 Rolerson fell from a teeter Mrs Sims Mrs Culver Mrs Huber board last Tuesday at school and Mrs Ed Relly Mrs Ray Mrs Annie broke his arm Fitzgerald Mrs ICels Mrs Merkel Thelma Spencer daughter of Mr Mrs Adams Miss Ida Keneflck mand Mra 'A Spencer is home from Hende?"
