Hoosier Rescued from Cave By JAMES BAPIS SALT LAKE CITY (UPI)—A university student, hauled from the nation's deepest vertical cave in a dramatic "push-pull" rescue by a crack team of spelunkers, remained in critical condition today. James Dowling, 22, a University of California graduate student from Connersville, Ind., was semi-conscious, suffering from shock, fatigue and bruises, when removed from Neff's Cave late Monday night. He was placed in an intensive care unit at a Salt Lake City hospital. "He seems to be responding to treatment," hospital attendants reported. They said he had talked briefly about his rescue and was told his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Donald Dowling, were expected to arrive momentarily from Indiana. Dowling and two other UC students, John Wood, 23, and Paul Gerhard, 22, both of Bladensburg, Md., entered the cave Sunday morning. Dowling became trapped the following morning during the ascent, at about 400 feet from the surface. Drop of 100 Feet The 1,170-foot deep cave, located in the Wasatch Mountains on the southeast outskirts of the city, has a 2 foot wide opening with the largest cavern estimated at 40 feet. Dowling was unable to climb from the cave's "great pit" which has a sheer drop of' more 'than 100 feet. "The first inkling of 'trouble .came' when Jim started slowing down," said Wood, who was climbing ahead of Dowling with Gerhard. "Then he complained his legs were troubling him. ''The interior of tile cave has needle sharp outcroppjngs—like little knife blades," said one rescuer, Alex Kelner. "Some were so sharp that Dowling's sleeping bag left a trail of feathers." Hackey, 22, read himself out of prison. Serving a two-to-three-year sentence for driving a car without the owner's consent, Hackey was assigned to work in the prison library. There he began studying law books and learned that the maximum penalty for his offense was one year. A judge ordered his released last weekend because he had already served more time than the la wallows. He began his term in September, 1963. State Policeman Is Named Sheriff SULLIVAN, Ind. (UPI)—Harold E. Roseberry of Sullivan, a detective with the Indiana State Police, Tuesday was named sheriff of Sullivan County after the sudden resignation of Lester Daves. Daves gave no reason for his resignation and was not available for comment. Roseberry, 52, sworn into office by Sullivan County Circuit Judge Joe Loudermilk, wfll resign from the state police.
