July 4 He said he was invited to spend the weekend at the cabin by Peter Flint his roommate at Alameda Maritime Academy (The defendant 'released from Chino State Prison 17 days before was taking a refresher course there) They drove to Candlelight Lodge the home of Peter Jensen in Mr Flint's 1941 Buick convertible on Friday July 1 On the night of July 3 Mr Flint left his guest in a Sonoma tavern while he took Mrs Paget to dinner About 10:30 me the two men took her to the resort at which she was vacationing with her two children Then they went to the Rustic Inn and stayed there until it closed about 2 a They drove home and went to bed about 2:30 He said he slept with Mr Flint The remainder of his story was told in a second interview The next morning he got up sometime between 8 and 10 o'clock and took the stone and Indian pestle and killed first Flint then Jensen (He has never revealed a motive for the double slaying) He brought Mrs Paget to the cabin by a ruse and struck her down with a pestle as they went up the stone steps of the cabin When she begged for mercy he went into the house to get towels to wipe -the blood from her face and heard the motor of the Buick start He ran down the steps got her out of the car and 'pulled and dragged' her to the backyard near the barbecue pit ACCORDING to his statement they "talked awhile" and Mrs Paget went Into the cabin and washed the blood from her head and face He contends that she consented to the criminal attack which followed and agreed to be tied to the tree before he fled in Mr Flint's car At the conclusion of the testimony by Mr Keegan Justice Futwider asked the defendant if he had anything to say "Not a thing" he answered in a voice so low that Leo Prescott of Richmond: court reporter asked him to repeat his statement Mr McGoldrick asked that as a result of the testimony given he be bound over to superior court I on the two charges of murder and I one of rape already filed and the additional charge of attempting to murder Mrs Paget a violation of Sec 217 of the penal code In Sonoma Valley Community hospital yesterday Mrs Paget was said to be much improved No plans have yet been made to remove her
