Tub San Francisco Exchange, whose editor has recently lost heavily in real estate speculations in Oakland (having, it supposed, shorted the market), cherishes strong prejudice against that town, which leads it to remark of the alleged increase of population lately: The people may be getting more numerous, but this settling up of Oakland shows a lamentable breach of common sense. It is shrewdly suspected that the editor has made heavy purchases in Saucelito and is endeavoring to work up a boom in that direction.

The last act of the drama which began with the killing of Billy Eingstnan, in February last, took place in tbe District Court to day.

When May Woodman, bis slayer, coovicied of the crime ot manslaughter, was brought in for sentence, Judge Pio-ney reviewed the affidavits whlob Euipy and Johns introduced for the defense on a motion for a new trial aud stated that be did not consider them sufficient. He overruled the motion. During the remarks of the Judge tn this connection the prisoner, who was acoompained by her mother, sat near her counsel, Messrs. Goodrich and Stanford, apparently unmoved by the denial of the motion. Baing requested to stand up, and being asked if she bad any reason to offer why seutence should not be pronounced, tbe prisoner broke into a paroxysm of tears, and, exclaiming, For Gods sake, let me die! sank into tbe obair.

Tue Judge then proceeded to state that having beon fouud guilty, it became bis duty to pass sentence; that his srupathy as well as that of tbe community went out to her because she was a woman, but bis duty as a magistrate prevented bis allowing it to warp bis judgment or stand in tbe way of justioe. Tbe custom so prevalent in tbU country of using weapons upon slight pretext for the purpose of redressing wrongs must be The practice of carrying concealed weapons, especially at night, was commented oo and condemned in the severest terms, The Judge, io conclusion, informed the prisoner that her term In the penitentiary oouid ba utilized by her in preparation for a higher and better life: that tbe full limit of the law was comparatively a llghtsen. teno, when taken tn conuectioQ with the crime, and he felt that bis duty compelled him to sentence tbe prisoner for a term of five years, the utmost limit prescribed for this offense. ing for any political party to pass a resolution on the subject. The purchase by the nobility of England of large tracts of land in the United States constitutes the worst possible tendency towards a land monopoly, which is tho worst monopoly of all. Millions of acres, all in large tracts, aro said to have been sold to these purchasers latolv. The Government of England could not acquiro titlo to a single square foot of ground in our territory, nor can any Englishman avail himself of the advantages of our pre-emption laws until he has renounced his allegiance to the Queen. No subject of Great Britain can acquire title from the Government of the United States to any mining claim or mineral land.

The object of these latter provisions is clearly to keep the land for the occupancy and benefit of American citizens. But when English capitalists are permitted to come over here and purchase frouTAmeri. can owners large bodies of land for the occupancy of English tenants, the Intention of the law is plainly eir. cumvented. They might as well buy from the Government itself as from second hands, so far as the re-sults of the purchase aro concerned.

Those British noblemen who are coming to Atnorica to invest aim to establish here a system of landlordism similar to that vuhlch now exists in their own country, and which some day not far in the future will give rise to such tronblo as will hake the very throne. They are, in other words, endeavoring to fasten upon America, so far as their limited efforts can extend, an evil precisely like that which Great Britain is now wondering how she can shake oft without disturbing the very basis of her social structure. An Englishman owning a hundred thousand acres of land in this country and living in England would bear the same relation to his tenants and the State that the non-resident landlords of Ireland bear to their tenants and the stricken isle to which they have so long been a curse. Great as our domain is, and many as are tho opportunities which our people find for making a living, we have no room in America for the introduction of the land system of Eu-. rope.

It is un-American and strikes at tho very foundation of that which has been tho basis of our prosperity thus far. We need to curtail the holdings of our own citizens rather than to permit the encroachment of alien monopolists who have been bred in a school of oppression which teaches that the tillers of the soil should have no rights greater than thoo accorded to slaves. Congross cannot occupy itself bettor next Winter than in considering this question. As to Personal Courage, The idea which the San Francisco Report entertains of what constitutes personal courage is Indicated by the annexed paragraph taken from its columns When Gebhardt was struck and merdv Btod his ground, he was a coward. Yesterday in Colton a man struck Warren Earp and ran away, whereupon Earp liiedft pistol bulhk aft-r him.

But he will not ba biancLd as a coward. The man ho struck Gebhardt was a love-SaC rival named Sanford. Both duties were doing the silly at the shrine of the Jersey Lily. At least Gebby waj, and the other fel low wanted to, which is just as bad. Men in that delicate condition are not usually able to screw their courge up lo the highest sticking point.

It was cowardly in Sanford to strike Gebhardt, and ho was a nasty, moan thing for doing it. But Gebhardt did not prove himself a coward by not striking back. Thai was proved before. Every dude, every masher and every pimp is a cowa-d. Gebhardt may not fall properly in any of the3 three categories, but if it wore not for his a year there is no telling what he would be.

He is a society man with more money than manhood. It Is idle to talk about cowardice or the absence of it iu persons of this stamp. Cn the other hand, Earp is full of courage of the Western kiud. He has made a record and is entitbd to tho honor, for it must be remem. bored that on the Western froni 'i not the smallest distinction a citizen can enjoy is that of having proved Evat aod ths the last of ii a Nevada's Mouey Bass Ktaien senator.

JOHN MULLEN. JULIUS D1ETBICII. Professor OCoxsell of the San Fran cisco Exchange is persuaded that though we may laugh to scorn the idea that the dog has anything to do with the there is implauted deep in the heart of every man a lurking suspicion that the gap between them is not as wide as the sausage dealers would lead us to suppose." Indeed it is not. There not a single missing link in the string of testimony going to establish the intimate relationship. In fact dog" and sausage" are almost interchangeable terms.

The senior proprietor of the Herald was accused last evening in a public place by a responsible citizen of having endeavored to sell the influence of hi3 paper to the Republicans in the Hayes-Tilden campaign. The accuser declared that he could support his assertion by affidavits. He is a lawyer and a prominent member of the Republican party, and doubtless knew what he was talking about. Now if this charge is not true it constitutes a slander. The senior member of the Herald therefore owes it to his honor, no less than to the reputation of his paper, to demand the production of the proofs in court.

A failure to do this will imply a conscious-nens of guilt. We know of no charge that could be made against a partisan or party paper more seiious than that of to sell out to the enemy. It is a kiud of ttvachory for which men are shot in the military service of all civilized countries. The Prehistoric Cemetery. fraTidnn new.

Two miles from Mandan, on the blufts near the junction of tho Hart and Missouri rivers, is an old ceme. tory of fully 100 acres in extent, tilled with bones of a giant race. 1 his vast city of the dead lies just east of the Fort Lincoln road. The ground has the appearance of hav mg been filled with trenches piled full of dead bodies, both man and beast, and covered with several feet of earth. Tn many places mounds, from eight to ten feet high, and some of them 100 feet or more in been thrown up and are filled with bones, broken pottery, vases of various bnght-colored Hints and agates, The pottery is of a dark material, beautifully decorated, delicate iu finish, and as light as wood, showing the work of a people skilled in the arts and possessed of a high state of emlizaion.

This has evidently been grand battlefield where thousands of men and horses have fallen. Nothing like a systemic or intelligent exploration has been made, as only little holes, two or three feet in depth, have been dug in some of the mounds, but many of the parts of the anatomy of man and beast, and beautiful specimens of broken pot-ery and other curiosities have been found in these feeble effoits at excavation.
